Hinckley said: “I hope that for you [studying the scriptures] will become something far more enjoyable than a duty; that, rather, it will be- come a love affair with the word of God. I promise you that as you read, your minds will be enlightened and your spirits will be lifted” (“The Light within You,” Ensign, May 1995, 99). As a Gospel Doctrine teacher, you have the opportunity to help the members of your class learn to love the Old Testament and find the enlightenment that President Hinckley promised. As you teach, you will be following the example of the Savior, who loved the scriptures and used them to teach his disciples. Just after Jesus was resurrected, he used the scriptures to teach two disciples powerful truths. A disciple named Cleopas and his companion were walking along the road to Emmaus, discussing the news they had just heard that Jesus’ body was no longer in the sepulchre. As they walked, they were joined by Jesus but did not recognize him. He asked what they were talking about and why they were sad, and they told him of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. When Jesus heard this, he “expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). Cleopas and his companion asked the Savior to stay with them, and as they sat to eat they recognized him as the resurrected Lord. He then vanished from their sight, and they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32). The scriptures that prompted the disciples’ hearts to burn were from the books of Moses and the prophets—the scriptures that we know as the Old Testament. As you teach these same sacred truths, the Holy Ghost will testify of their truth- fulness to your class as he did to Cleopas and his companion. Studying the Old Testament should strengthen class members’ testimonies of the Savior and their commitment to live his gospel. Guided by the Spirit in their study, class members should be able to testify with Job, “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth” (Job 19:25). Teaching by the Spirit When preparing for Gospel Doctrine class, it is important that you seek inspira- tion and guidance from the Spirit of the Lord. “The Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith,” said the Lord, “and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach” (D&C 42:14). Remember that the Holy Ghost is the teacher in your class. The way you seek the Spirit is through prayer, fasting, daily study of the scriptures, and obedience to the commandments. While preparing for class, pray for the Spirit to help you understand the scriptures and the needs of class members. The Spirit can also help you plan meaningful ways to discuss the scriptures and apply them to the present (1 Nephi 19:23). With the help of the Spirit, you will become an effective instrument in the hands of the Lord to teach his word to his children. v Some suggestions for how to invite the Spirit into your class are given below: 1. Invite class members to offer prayers before and after the lesson. During class, pray in your heart for the Spirit to guide you, to open the hearts of class members, and to testify and inspire. 2. Use the scriptures (see “Focusing on the Scriptures” below). 3. Bear testimony whenever the Spirit prompts you, not just at the end of the lesson. Bear testimony of the Savior. Frequently invite class members to bear their testimonies. 4. Use hymns, Primary songs, and other sacred music to prepare class members’ hearts to feel the Spirit. 5. Express love for class members, for others, and for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. 6. Share insights, feelings, and experiences that relate to principles in the lesson. Invite class members to do the same. Members could also tell how they have applied or taught what was discussed in previous lessons. Focusing on the Scriptures Preparing for Gospel Doctrine class requires diligent, prayerful study of the scrip- tures. The Lord commanded, “Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word.” As you obtain his word through scripture study, the Lord promises that “your tongue [shall] be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea the power of God unto the convincing of men” (D&C 11:21).

Honeyridge Baptist Church Isaiah 1:1-31 God’s Grace to People in Crisis Introduction As we come to God’s Word this evening, my plan is to try and connect what we have been learning over the past 7 weeks with a particular passage of Scripture… in order to show you practically how by going through the various steps we have been considering… we will be able to rightly handle God’s word of Truth… and will be able to rightly understand it and apply it to ourselves as God intended. So I want us to turn in our Bibles to the Prophet Isaiah… and we are going to look at Isaiah 1 tonight. TEXT So let me start by telling you a few things about the Book itself… before we come to consider the specific Text of Chapter 1. T Isaiah is the fifth longest book in the Bible and the third longest of all the Prophets, just marginally shorter than the book of Jeremiah & Ezekiel. To put that in the NT perspective… The book of Isaiah is about the same length as Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians & 1-2 Thessalonians combined! Why is this relevant? Well, firstly because it makes up a significant portion of God’s revelation, and so just from that perspective alone, we should be committed to knowing what God has to say to us in this book. But what is especially important about the book of Isaiah is that it is directly quoted 66x in the NT with about 350 more allusions to ideas or phrases from Isaiah making it the most referenced OT book in the NT.

    THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY ISAIAH 52:13-54:17 It was Martin Luther who rightly wrote, “If you want to understand the Christian message you must start with the wounds of Christ.” The cross of Jesus is the crux of Christianity. In fact, the term crux is from crucifixion. And outside of the four Christian Gospels there is no clearer account of Messiah’s crucifixion than Isaiah 53. Realize the Hebrew prophet Isaiah was writing 700 years in advance of Calvary - 200 years before crucifixion was invented by the Persians - and 500 years before it was employed by Rome. Yet Isaiah paints an amazingly vivid and detailed prophetic account of all that Jesus endured to take away our sin. !1 To read this chapter with a dry eye is an indication of a cold heart. Isaiah 53 is some emotional footage. In fact, this passage from the Jewish Scriptures is so obviously and authoritatively Christian in its message, later Jews conspired to eliminate it from their Bibles. Ashkenazi, or European Jews, omitted Chapter 53 from their editions of Isaiah. Sephardic, or Oriental Jews, retained it, but tried to explain it away by relating it to the nation Israel rather than a personal Messiah. Yet God refuses to let His people ignore Isaiah’s testimony. Today, in the Givat Ram neighborhood of Jerusalem - at the heart of the city and the modern state - across the street from the Israeli Knesset - there is a unique building known as The Shrine of the Book. !2 It stands as part of the Israeli Museum.

    14. BIBLICAL EPIC: 2 Chronicles Notes rown 2 Chron 1: Solomon made offerings. God said, "What shall I give you?" Solomon said, "Wisdom to rule this people." So Solomon ruled over Israel. • 1:1-6. Solomon Worships at Gibeon. Solomon’s journey to the Mosaic tabernacle and altar at Gibeon, like David’s mission to retrieve the Ark, is presented as a public enterprise that involves all Israel. Like David, Solomon maintains continuity with the Mosaic covenant as the foundation of his own reign. Solomon begins his reign as David instructed him (1 Chron 22:19), by worshiping God and seeking guidance. “High places” were commonly associated with hills or mountains in the OT world. Prior to the construction of the temple, high places were generic worship sites that were not necessarily connected with pagan worship. The negative connotation of high places begins after the completion of the temple, after which high places were associated with idolatry and syncretism. Solomon’s extensive sacrifice at Gibeon tangibly showed his reverence for God at the outset of his reign. • 1:7-13. Solomon’s Request for Wisdom. Solomon’s faithful seeking leads to a nighttime appearance of God (in a dream, according to 1 Kings 3:5), in which God invites Solomon to ask in prayer for whatever he desires. Solomon makes two requests: (1) that God would continue to bring the fullness of the Davidic covenant (and the Abrahamic covenant) to pass (looking forward to the completion of the temple, 2 Chron 6:17) and (2) that God would grant him wisdom and knowledge.

Flint Trinity Western University Langley, British Columbia [email protected] Brief Comments on the Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Importance On 11 April 1948, the Dead Sea Scrolls were announced to the world by Millar Burrows, one of America’s leading biblical scholars. Soon after- wards, famed archaeologist William Albright made the extraordinary claim that the scrolls found in the Judean Desert were “the greatest archaeological find of the Twentieth Century.” A brief introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls and what follows will provide clear indications why Albright’s claim is in- deed valid. Details on the discovery of the scrolls are readily accessible and known to most scholars,1 so only the barest comments are necessary. The discovery begins with scrolls found by Bedouin shepherds in one cave in late 1946 or early 1947 in the region of Khirbet Qumran, about one mile inland from the western shore of the Dead Sea and some eight miles south of Jericho. By 1956, a total of eleven caves had been discovered at Qumran. The caves yielded various artifacts, especially pottery. The most impor- tant find was scrolls (i.e. rolled manuscripts) written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the three languages of the Bible. Almost 900 were found in the Qumran caves in about 25,000–50,000 pieces,2 with many no bigger than a postage stamp.

Bruce Compton 1 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. 15 He will eat curds and honey at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken (Isa 7:14–16). 2 In Isaiah 7:1 Ahaz (735–715 B.C.) of the southern kingdom is confronted in 734 B.C. by a combined force of Rezin (750–732 B.C.) from Syria and of Pekah (752–732 B.C.) from the northern kingdom. The two kings had earlier formed a coalition to ward off Assyrian he- gemony. Ahaz apparently had rejected their previous overtures to join them. In response, the two kings sent their combined forces against Jerusalem in an effort to depose Ahaz, replace him with a king of their choosing, and force the southern kingdom into joining their cause (v. 6). 3 The motive behind this Syro-Ephraimite incursion, it may be as- sumed, was two-fold. By having the southern kingdom as part of the coalition, the coalition’s chances against the formidable Assyrian forces would be enhanced. At the same time, a buffer would be provided for the coalition’s southern flank in case Egypt decided to take advantage of the political instability in the region.
