Canterbury Voice release is a worldwide recognised system which is being used at the Grand America and Norfolk Islands plus throughout Australia. The voice release system takes out the human element for missing due to fast or slow pulls so shooters now have to find other excuses why they miss targets. Gunshot 18 2008 North Island and New Zealand Sporting Clay Championships Wanganui Clay Target Club 15-17 February 2008 The 2008 North Island, New Zealand Sporting Clay Championships along with The Pre National Trophy shoot, were held on Gordon and Marion MacPhee’s property and two adjoining properties between 13th and 17th of February 2008 at Rata. The Pre- National 100 target trophy match was held on the 13th with 68 shooters attending. This shoot was a fund raiser for the Palmerston North Boys High School shooting team in return for which the boys helped to keep everything stocked up and tidy for the 4 days. The main drawn score prize (a Howa rifle package) was won after a shoot off between 9 shooters, by Callum Beattie, a 15 year old school boy who managed to out shoot some of our more senior shooters. I would take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for this event Ridgeline of NZ, Tanalised, Hawera Rewinds Ltd, Target Products Ltd and Sox Pilipasidis, HOA NI and New Zealand Sporting Champion David Brown from England for their support. The prize table with Chris Ziesler totalled $7500.00.

Kilwell Sports/Gamebore North Islands Championship. 101 shooters competed in this championship which was shot over two 50 target fields of very diverse targets, and most shooters found them very challenging, a few shooters came off the grounds with less targets in the bag than they would have liked, but that’s sporting.

The Kilwell Sports/Gamebore NZ National Championships. The day started with rain, which did not help the workers with the final setting of targets. The fields were checked for safety by Albie Hansen and Craig Matthews. Shooting was over four 25 target fields. Two of these fields the shooters had not seen. This introduced a wider variety of targets including some under foot targets off the platform. Throughout the day we had showers on and off with overcast NZ Junior Roy Bishop skies; this kept the heat at bay but made the conditions quite testing. The scores on day one were an indication that the that score and the next score either side went into a shoot off weather had played its part, and with the level of targets for a $2000.00 pheasant shooting package at the RATHMOY being lifted for the Nationals, some shooters did not handle Estate. There were four shooters in the shoot off and it was them as well as they might, however the top shooters still won by Geoff Furborough from Hawera. came in with some very good scores. The North / South match was won by the South Island team Sunday 17th dawned dry and with the fields re-set by Craig for the first time. At the Beretta High gun presentation, Managing Director Martyn Coe announced that this year's Scholarship has gone to Colin Waghorn, a 20-year old shooter from the Gorge Road Clay Target Club. Colin celebrated his appointment by making the Junior Mackintosh Team after a consistent week at the Nationals. The application numbers this year were down on previous years despite a broadening out of the judging criteria, but the standard was extremely high, both in terms of performance criteria and being deserving of the Scholarship. This made the judges' decision-making difficult. Colin will be a worthy recipient of the Scholarship and he will be watched with Trevor Manson, HOA interest as he progresses with the Beretta 682E he receives as part of the Scholarship package. 2007/08 Junior Scholarship holder, Brendon Malcolm is having a stellar year, winning the Vic Ball Long Run with 928, winning the National AA Grade High Gun and being the highest qualifier in the Junior Mackintosh Team; all shot with his Beretta 682E trap gun. Colin's Scholarship will run from April 2008 through until March 2010 and will include Beretta accessories, gun-fitting, ammunition supply and coaching, plus ammunition and travel assistance from the NZCTA. www.shootersshop.com.au

Gunshot 26 2008 F.I.T.A.S.C. Oceania Championships These were held over Easter at the CTC Gun Club about 35 minutes out of Noumea, New Caledonia. This year the number of shooters was down from 102 in 2005 to 79 this year. NZ had a total of 15 shooters taking part, with a total touring party of 30. Australia had a total of 20 shooters taking part. Two were from Tahiti, one from France and the rest came from New Caledonia. This year the shooting conditions were harder because of the weather and the under foot conditions, (as one photo will show) but the first two days of practice were fine. We saw a great opening; a group of local (native people) in native costume gave a 15 minute display which was appreciated by everyone. The rain started from day one and did not really end till the morning of the final day, on and off all the time. NZ Open Team This was a shame, after all the hard work done by the members of the club, to present to us eight great layouts to shoot over. This year, with the financial help from the local government, they were able to buy a large number of new traps, (perhaps our minister of sport should be approached) which made a massive difference in presenting the targets to the shooters. One major problem they had, which was out of their control, was the rain, along with the humidity, making the targets stick together. Again we had success right across the grades with each team bringing home silver medals, and in each category. Over all: Brian Deadman 5th over all 164/200, also 2nd Junior David Alley 6th over all 162 / 200 NZ Veterans Gordon MacPhee, Albie Hanson, Ian Swale Adam Green 7= 160/200 Adam Hanson 7= 160/200 Roy Bishop 10th 156/200, also 3rd Junior Russell Cooper 15th 147/200, also 3rd Vet Gordon MacPhee 17th 146/200, also 4th Vet Vaughan Danks 5th Junior Zane Waenga =7th Junior Albie Hanson 6th Vet Congratulations must go to Bernard Sireuil in taking out the HOA after a great shoot off with Damien Birgan, both on a score off 173/200. NZ Junior team Zane Waenga, Vaughan Danks, Roy Bishop The down side to all NZ shooters and supporters that were there was that one got food poisoning on the first day, a large number had a problem with bio gas, and one that got bitten www.shootersshop.com.au on the foot. Gunshot 30 Instruction The missing Link Andrew Harvison reveals the mysteries surrounding gun mount and estimating lead. The principles High score day target shooting is Key Points technique. Gunshot 31 The Mental Game

BeCOME the clay! You don’t have to be a top shot to benefit from a bit of mental training, writes Mike Yardley You often hear people say that shooting is 80 or 90 percent psychology. There is some truth in this, of course, but as someone who once trained as a psychologist, I think there is a great deal of misunderstanding of what psychology is all about. It is no black art. In a sporting context, psychology is all about the combination of thought and action and the consequence of thought upon action. It is a mistake to see psychology as separate from other aspects of technique. It is not something for elite sportsmen and women alone. It’s something that can be useful to all of us, and should be an integral part of basic and advanced technique alike. At all levels of ability, there should be a preparation and a performance stage to every shot. The preparation stage concerns everything that should be done (mentally and physically) before the call for the target is made. The per formance stage is the physical action and mental process after it – once one is committed to the shot. Good shooting psychology is about good thoughts and actions. This implies that there are bad thoughts and actions – thoughts that are a waste of energy. Any competitor should create a personal shooting routine. Build a plan based on the simple stuff that works and free your mind of everything else. Bad psychology Some people start to panic or allow unwanted thoughts in, once they are committed to the swing. Their focus comes off the target and back to the barrels, their movements become hesitant (or wild), as the metaphorical

Gunshot 32 cogs go round in their befuddled heads. They will invariably lift from the gun with their weight coming back. The usual result of all this is that the barrels will rise and stop – a miss behind and above ensuing. This is the undesirable consequence of thinking about the wrong thing at the wrong time, if you like, the product of bad psychology. Do not worry about cartridges, choke, barrel length, gunfit etc … such thoughts are distracting. Good psychology The good thoughts are about the type and speed of the target, the weather conditions and anything deceptive concerning presentation. Watch other people shoot if you can, to gather the intelligence needed to create your plan, consider: where do I want to break the target? Where do I first see it clearly? And where do I first see it as a blur? Without getting too involved in specific techniques, I would normally align my body to the anticipated break point, take my gun back to where I see the target clearly and look into the zone of the blur to pick the target up. Others may have other plans/routines, the point is that you should create one that suits you. We are now near the point of calling for the target. Before doing this, visualise a broken-clay in your mind’s eye. This creates a virtual image of the desired outcome, which statistically greatly enhances the probability of actual success. Many Olympic athletes use positive visualisation, and they take the technique to the pinnacle of athletic performance. Gunshot 37 KAIKOHE ATA SHOOTING AT WAIKATO CLUB CHAMPS March 15th shoot We managed another great day of Waikato weather with a good turnout to enjoy the programme. Firstly a thank you to the Waikato club for allowing us to host the event at their superb facilities as well as a thank you to those who helped make the day run smooth with their help loading traps, refereeing and scoring. Also thanks again to Brant for the time and effort cashiering and squading. And a big thanks to Wayne Cowley for his help in adjusting the trap machine to provide an almost acceptable pair of doubles. The level of shooting is really picking up as evidenced by the improving scores and the number of times the buckles for the first 4 hundred straights are getting a scare. Also, we had 2 squads shoot the full 300 target program. In the singles we had three competitors tie for 1st on 99's Allan Kininmont, Jack Norwood and Graeme Williams. Well done and congratulations on the effort. Paul Schmidt was Dave Wordley High Gun With All The Sashes next with 98 and then Brant Woodward on 97. Handicap saw Brant earn an additional yard with a 97 for first place. Paul Schmidt 2nd on 95 Graeme Williams and Gary Vittle tied for 3rd on 93. One of the goals in handicap shooting is to shoot well enough to gain additional yardage. A score of 96 or better gains the shooter an additional yard. Jack Norwood led the way in doubles with a 91 for 1st, Chris Robinson 2nd on 86 and Graeme Williams 3rd on 85. The ATA would like to welcome the following new members. Jim Nash, Nicholas Picknell, Alex Squires, Gary Vittle, Merv Pratt, Logan Dunsmuir and Mark Ford. Good shooting, Paul Basten. Gunshot 44 Another suggestion to reduce the recoil from the first shot is to use a very light load. A 7/8 – or one-ounce load on the first shot is plent y of shell to break ever y target. You can use very small shot on the first shot and still never handicap yourself. One ounce of Size 8 ½ shot will give you more target-crushing pellets than 1 1/8 ounces of Size 8. It will also give you less recoil and less Getting closer to your muzzle jump. Keep in mind, if you were going to break the target with second-bird goals? heavier load, you would also break it with the lighter load. Lighter loads Last month we started a discussion There could be some other factors that save you money if you reload and they about the second shot of doubles and would lead you to finding out that your will reduce the punishment to your face how you can become a better doubles gun is too high to make a nice move to and shoulder. If the recoil bounces the why shooters approach the second target to outrun your ability to break barrel of the gun upward, it’s mighty target from high altitude rather than a it as well. We are trying to cut down tough to regain control, adjust our move shallow, nearly straight-line move from on the distance between ourselves and so we are approaching from the bottom, the bottom.
