Feb 14 Garden Stars 7-8:30PM LOOKING UP! a message from the president Norfolk Botanical Gardens This month’s most talked about astronomy event has to be the total lunar Feb 16 Saturday Sun-day eclipse. The BBAA participated by supporting the Watch Party at the 10AM-1PM Chesapeake Planetarium. Anyone in attendance will tell you it was COLD, but Elizabeth River Park manageable if you wore layers, utilized the planetarium where Dr. Robert Hitt seemed to have the thermostat set to 100 degrees, and drank copious amounts Feb 23 Skywatch of the hot coffee that Kent Blackwell brewed in the back office. 6PM-10PM The event had a huge following on Facebook but with the cold Northwest River Park temperatures, we weren’t sure how many would come out. 1. Budorcas Taxicolor Tibetanus Milne-Edwards.- a Horn of an Adult and Skins and Skulls of Two Very Young Animals, Tai-Pa-Shiang, August 16 and October 25
59.9(51.4) Article XXIX.- MAMMALS FROM SHEN-SI PROVINCE, CHINA. By J. A. ALLEN. A small collection of mammals from Mount Tai-pai, Shen-si Province, China, recently acquired by the Museum through Mr. Alan Owston of Yokohama, contains several species of interest. It comprises 55 specimens, representing 16 species, some of which appear to be undescribed. The material is rather poorly prepared, the skulls having been left in the skins, and when removed were found to be more or less mutilated, some of them lacking the whole of the postorbital portion. The collection is of interest as coming from a hitherto unexplored locality, the Tai-pa-shiang mountains, on the western border of Shen-si, which are said to reach an altitude of about 11,000 feet. The specimens are mostly labeled simply "Tai-pa- shiang," with the sex of the specimen and date of collection, but a few are labeled as from "Yumonko, foot of Tai-pa-shiang," and others are marked "Si-Tai-pa-shiang." In no case is the altitude indicated. 1. Budorcas taxicolor tibetanus Milne-Edwards.- A horn of an adult and skins and skulls of two very young animals, Tai-pa-shiang, August 16 and October 25. The two specimens are respectively male and female, and differ much in color, the male having the body, except the ventral surface and the dorsal stripe, pale yellowish, the dorsal stripe, the ventral surface and limbs dark dull reddish brown; top of nose and edge of ears blackish. The other has the body nearly white, with the underparts and limbs dark brown; the dorsal stripe is dark brown only over the shoulders, and black mixed with white on the top of the neck and posterior two-thirds of the dorsal line; black hairs are also appearing on the limbs. -

CONSTELLATION BOÖTES, THE HERDSMAN Boötes is the cultivator or Ploughman who drives the Bears, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor around the Pole Star Polaris. The bears, tied to the Polar Axis, are pulling a plough behind them, tilling the heavenly fields "in order that the rotations of the heavens should never cease". It is said that Boötes invented the plough to enable mankind to better till the ground and as such, perhaps, immortalizes the transition from a nomadic life to settled agriculture in the ancient world. This pleased Ceres, the Goddess of Agriculture, so much that she asked Jupiter to place Boötes amongst the stars as a token of gratitude. Boötes was first catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century and is home to Arcturus, the third individual brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius in Canis Major and Canopus in Carina constellation. It is a constellation of large extent, stretching from Draco to Virgo, nearly 50° in declination, and 30° in right ascension, and contains 85 naked-eye stars according to Argelander. The constellation exhibits better than most constellations the character assigned to it. One can readily picture to one's self the figure of a Herdsman with upraised arm driving the Greater Bear before him. FACTS, LOCATION & MAP • The neighbouring constellations are Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices, Corona Borealis, Draco, Hercules, Serpens Caput, Virgo, and Ursa Major. • Boötes has 10 stars with known planets and does not contain any Messier objects. • The brightest star in the constellation is Arcturus, Alpha Boötis, which is also the third brightest star in the night sky. -

Public Star Party Follows at the It’s that time of year when obstacles appear in the sky. In particular, this year is Centennial Obs. loaded with fog. It got in the way of letting us see the dance of the Jovian moons late last month, and it’s hindered our views of other unique shows. Still, members Club Officers reported finding enough of a clear sky to let us see Comet Lovejoy, and some great photos by members are popping up on the Facebook page. Robert Mayer, President This month, however, is a great opportunity to see the benefit of something [email protected] getting in the way. Our own Chris Anderson of the Herrett Center has been using 208-312-1203 the Centennial Observatory’s scope to do work on occultation’s, particularly with asteroids. This month’s MVAS meeting on Feb. 14th will give him the stage to Terry Wofford, Vice President show us just how this all works. [email protected] The following weekend may also be the time the weather allows us to resume 208-308-1821 MVAS-only star parties. Feb. 21 is a great window for a possible star party; we’ll announce the location if the weather permits. However, if we don’t get that Gary Leavitt, Secretary window, we’ll fall back on what has become a MVAS tradition: Planetarium night [email protected] at the Herrett Center. -

Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment for the Use of Wildlife Damage Management Methods by USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services Chapter I Introduction to Risk Assessments for Methods Used in Wildlife Damage Management MAY 2017 Introduction to Risk Assessments for Methods Used in Wildlife Damage Management EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services (WS) Program completed Risk Assessments for methods used in wildlife damage management in 1992 (USDA 1997). While those Risk Assessments are still valid, for the most part, the WS Program has expanded programs into different areas of wildlife management and wildlife damage management (WDM) such as work on airports, with feral swine and management of other invasive species, disease surveillance and control. Inherently, these programs have expanded the methods being used. Additionally, research has improved the effectiveness and selectiveness of methods being used and made new tools available. Thus, new methods and strategies will be analyzed in these risk assessments to cover the latest methods being used. The risk assements are being completed in Chapters and will be made available on a website, which can be regularly updated. Similar methods are combined into single risk assessments for efficiency; for example Chapter IV contains all foothold traps being used including standard foothold traps, pole traps, and foot cuffs. The Introduction to Risk Assessments is Chapter I and was completed to give an overall summary of the national WS Program. The methods being used and risks to target and nontarget species, people, pets, and the environment, and the issue of humanenss are discussed in this Chapter. From FY11 to FY15, WS had work tasks associated with 53 different methods being used. -

Footprint Ecology / CCW. 1 Summary It is increasingly recognised that recreational access to the countryside has a wide range of benefits, such as positive effects on health and well-being, economic benefits and an enhanced understanding of and connection with the natural environment. There are also negative effects of access, however, as people’s presence in the countryside can impact on the nature conservation interest of sites. This report reviews these potential impacts to the Welsh countryside, and we go on to discuss how such impacts could be mapped across the entirety of Wales. Such a map (or series of maps) would provide a tool for policy makers, planners and access managers, highlighting areas of the countryside particularly sensitive to access and potentially guiding the location and provision of access infrastructure, housing etc. We structure the review according to four main types of impacts: contamination, damage, fire and disturbance. Contamination includes impacts such as litter, nutrient enrichment and the spread of exotic species. Within the section on damage we consider harvesting and the impacts of footfall on vegetation and erosion of substrates. The fire section addresses the impacts of fire (accidental or arson) on animals, plant communities and the soil. Disturbance is typically the unintentional consequences of people’s presence, sometimes leading to animals avoiding particular areas and impacts on breeding success, survival etc. We review the effects of disturbance to mammals, birds, herptiles and invertebrates and also consider direct mortality, for example trampling of nests or deliberate killing of reptiles. -
Deep Sky Challenge
The Night Sky in January, 2018 Welcome to another year! Now we have turned the corner and the nights are drawing out more rapidly. On January 1st, the Sun will set at 16:01 but by January 31st it will be setting at 16:50! The Earth will be at perihelion on January 3rd when it will be at its closest to the Sun. It seems odd that the weather is at its coldest when the Earth is closest to the Sun, but this is because the tilt of the Earth’s axis has the biggest effect on the weather and, in winter, it is tilted away from the Sun. The start of this year is unusual since there will be three consecutive “supermoons”. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is particularly close to the Earth in its elliptical orbit. It is a full Moon which looks exceptionally large and beautiful. A supermoon occurred on December 3rd but the skies in the UK weren’t very clear. However, our friend Clive Manvell had the good fortune to be on a boat in the Pacific near the Solomon Islands at the time. He sent us the following image: Clive took this image with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera, hand held in the dark on a boat. His camera settings were shutter speed 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400 and the focal length of the lens was 400mm. He used a fast shutter speed because of the movement of the boat. You can tell that this image was taken in a different part of the world since the Moon’s features are in different positions from the way we see them. -
The Night Sky This Month
The Night Sky (June 2019) BST (Universal Time plus one hour) is used this month . The General Weather Pattern June is usually the driest month of the year. Inland, however, cumulous clouds can develop to great heights giving way to thunder storms which signal the end of a dry spell. Here in Wales a coastal fog can sometimes mar an evening. Temperatures are usually above 10 ºC at night, but always prepare for the worst. Earth (E) The ecliptic is low throughout the night in June and the first half of July. Since the Moon and planets appear to closely follow this path, they will be found low in the night sky too, causing problems for observers combating astronomical twilight and the murk and disturbance of a thicker atmosphere at that elevation. Consequently, planets do not present themselves at their best at this time. However, if that is where they are situated we must make the best of it. In keeping with the equation of time the latest sunset is on the 25th June this year, and the earliest sunrise is on the 18th June. The summer solstice, when daylight lasts longest, is at 15:55 on the 21st June, and darkness is short-lived here in South Wales. Technically, astronomical twilight exists when the centre of the Sun is less than 18º below the horizon. Conditions apply as to the use of this matter.
