SCHILTZ† In recent decades, a strand of feminist theory variously referred to as “care feminism,” “cultural feminism,” or “relational feminism” has been arguing for a social re-evaluation of what has traditionally been regarded as “women’s work”—the care of dependents, such as children and elderly or disabled family members. As part of that project, a number of feminists have suggested that the traditional liberal theory of justice, based on the ideal of autonomous, independent actors, should be rejected, or at least revised to reflect the reality of dependency in the life of every individual. MAY* ■ The purpose of this presentation is to articulate the philosophical anthropolo- gy underlying the teaching of Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Evangelium vitae and to contrast this understanding of the human person with the philosoph- ical anthropology underlying the “culture of death.” I will begin by considering the anthropology at the heart of the culture of death, continue by offering a critique of this utterly false and dualistic under- standing of the human person and setting forth the key elements central to the realistic and integral anthropology at the heart of the teaching found in Evangelium vitae. 1. The Anthropology Underlying the Culture of Death John Paul II explicitly and accurately identifies this anthropology in the first chapter of Evangelium vitae, a chapter entitled Present-Day Threats to Human Life. In identifying this anthropology he likewise sketches the authentic anthro- pology of his encyclical. The Pope goes to the root causes of these threats, declar- ing that the culture of death has its roots in «the mentality which carries the con- cept of subjectivity to an extreme and even distorts it, and recognizes as a subject of rights only the person who enjoys full or at least incipient autonomy and who emerges from a state of total dependence on others» (no. 19). It is a mentality «which tends to equate personal dignity with the capacity for verbal and explic- it, or at least perceptible, communication» (no. 19). Abstract This thesis aims to reconstruct the speeches given by Pope John Paul II on his visits to Poland in 1979, 1983, and 1987 as part of a specially designed pedagogical program. The author argues that one of the functions of the papal visits, as a pedagogical program, was to provide instruction and establish a firm moral and cultural foundation for the people of communist Poland. That being said, this thesis also asserts that John Paul II viewed himself as a pedagogue to the nation. The author shows how the Pope’s intellectual development contributes to this position and examines his speeches in light of the situation in Poland before and after each visit. Quentin Skinner’s ideas on meaning and intention are used as the analytical apparatus for this thesis. By distinguishing between different forms of meaning and the intentions of speech, this thesis is able to argue that there are present different layers of meaning in the Pope’s speeches; of which one corresponds to the pedagogical programs. -

Blowers, Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan College Abstract This essay explores Augustine’s capacity to accommodate a tragic vision of human existence within his interpretation of the Christian revelation. Broadly speaking, for Augustine, sacred history combines the tragic necessity of self-inflicted human sinfulness with the benevolent necessity of the economy of divine grace. Augustine to some degree admired the pagan tragedians for compelling the attention and emotion of their audiences in confronting the ineluctability of evil (and other tragic themes), but their mimesis ultimately failed since it could not touch the reality conveyed in divine revelation. Two exegetical test cases, the story of Jephthah’s sacrifice of his daughter (Judges 11) and King Saul’s tragic heroics in 1 Samuel, exemplify how Augustine greatly profited from interpreting Scripture through a tragical lens. A whole other dimension of Augustine’s tragic vision appears in his attempt – inspired from his own early experience of staged tragedies in Carthage – to reenter ancient philosophical debates on tragedy and mimesis, and to revamp in Christian terms the tragic emotions, especially tragic pity as Christian mercy. 157 Augustine on Heart and Life Keywords: tragedy, necessity, theodicy, mimesis, catharsis, tragic pity Introduction “Tragedy” and “the tragic” are notoriously slippery terms both in historical and colloquial usage. Over the centuries “tragedy” has been employed to indicate, on the one hand, a genre of ancient drama – one depicting flawed human characters struggling heroically against the leviathan forces of cosmic necessity (in the form of abject suffering, death, etc.) – and, on the other hand, commonly today, a catastrophic event catching observers by utter surprise and upending their sense of cosmic stability and justice. -

JOHN PAUL H AND CHILDREN'S EDUCATION CHRISTOPHER TOLLEFSEN* Like many other moral and social issues, children's educa- tion can serve as a prism through which to understand the impli- cations of moral, political, and legal theory. Education, like the family, abortion, and embryonic research, capital punishment, euthanasia, and other issues, raises a number of questions, the answers to which are illustrative of a variety of moral, political, religious, and legal standpoints. So, for example, a libertarian, a political liberal, and a per- fectionist natural lawyer will all have something to say about the question of who should provide a child's education, what the content of that education should be, and what mechanisms for the provision of education, such as school vouchers, will or will not be morally and politically permissible.
