Laurie Gatlin

Laurie Gatlin is an Assistant Professor of Art Education at Cal- ifornia State Uni- versity in Long Beach. Currently, she is finishing her doctorate at Indiana Univer- sity where her research is on the artmaking process and instructional strategies. Gat- lin has extensive experience teaching at the middle school and high school levels as an art teacher. As she worked in the pub- lic schools, Gatlin found that she created her classroom teaching around the use of a sketchbook as a portable studio; a studio that her students could enter at any time. Gatlin’s work with sketchbooks as ways of understanding the world has become the core of her investigation into art teaching practice. She also has a particular interest in working with exceptional students, and students with disabilities. Gatlin has pre- Rebecca Sexton sented extensively at state and national Larson conferences.
