INCOGNITO Data Unica in Sicilia Per La Jazz Funk Band Inglese Capitanata Jean Paul Maunick “Bluey” Taormina (Me), Teatro Antico, 17 Luglio 2013, H COMUNICATO STAMPA ASSOCIAZIONE CATANIA JAZZ INCOGNITO Data unica in Sicilia per la jazz funk band inglese capitanata Jean Paul Maunick “Bluey” Taormina (Me), Teatro Antico, 17 luglio 2013, h. 21.30. Ingresso: platea numerata € 27,50, gradinata € 22,00 diritti inclusi. Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. • London's Sonic Space
Introduction: London’s sonic space London provides a vast space – bigger in some senses than the nation – in which cultures can be differently imagined and conceived. (Kevin Robins) This book is about three black music multicultures in London in the 1980s and 1990s: rare groove, acid house and jungle. It is a critical explora tion of the role they have played in the production of what Stuart Hall once identified as London’s ‘workable, lived multiculture’ (Hall 2004). These are not the only important black music scenes in London: that list would include soca, jazz and Afrojazz, Afrobeat, dancehall, hip hop, UK garage, R&B and grime, and to include them all would have called for a much bigger book. So, this is not a comprehensive study of all black music produced and consumed in the city. I focus on rare groove, acid house and jungle because they are three moments that involved inter-racial collaboration, in terms of both production and consumption, around black music. They were music scenes which put the racial divisions of the city into question and worked against the logic of spatial separation. They explored new ways in which culture could be inhabited collectively. In ways both deliberate and contingent, these musical scenes involved collaboration between young people from different sides of what the great black American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois (1903) identified as ‘the color line’, and hosted lived multi culture on the dancefloor. Around each scene, discourses developed to address this cultural intermixture, and within them were forged new ways of dancing, listening and making 1 It’s a London thing culture together.

  • Young Soul Rebels? Soul Scenes in Seventies Britain
Young soul rebels? Soul scenes in seventies Britain David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. One of my earliest and most formative musical experiences took place at the age of eight or nine. It must have been in 1963 that I happened to watch James Brown playing live on the commercial TV show Ready Steady Go! It wasn’t just his rasping and pleading vocals that I found so compelling, or his astonishing dancing. I can still recall the moment where Brown seemed to break down in an apparent excess of soulful emotion, or perhaps physical exhaustion. He dropped to his knees, sweating profusely, as an assistant wrapped a cloak around him and ushered him off stage. Brown proceeded to throw off the cloak, grabbed the mic and returned to performing. Little did I know that this routine was a regular feature of Brown’s act. For a lower-middle-class white boy in suburban Britain, it was a kind of revelation: it suggested that music could be something other than the bland, white mainstream pop that my parents seemed to like. Soul music has stayed with me. While I grew up with Tamla-Motown, I was obviously much too young to be a mod; although by the time I arrived at my hippy teenage- hood, I was still listening to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
