While the threat to the host tree is reasonably well-known, the threat myrtle rust poses to the associated biota is poorly understood. As a contribution to our knowledge of this, a preliminary list of the lichenised mycobiota that utilise pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) as a phorophyte is presented, based on a survey of the specimens in two herbaria with extensive collections from the natural range of this endemic tree species.

Abstract –During two years the little-known Kouakoué Massif was explored by a team of seven botanists and five students. Nine hundred sixty-six collections of vascular plants were made, of which three-quarters have thus far been identified to species. Earlier collections have also been taken into account in order to summarize botanical knowledge of this mountain. As a result, 591 vascular plant taxa are now known from the massif, of which 284 have been brought to light by the present inventory. Of the new species thus far discovered, several have been published or are in press. Some particularly rare species have been observed, several of which had not previously been known from this mountain. The first bryological data for the region, as well as the first information concerning the bee fauna, have been gathered. TANGUY JAFFRE,* PHILIPPE BOUCHET’ and JEAN-MARIE VEILLON ORSTOM, Ceiitre de Nouméa, B.P. A5, Nouméa, New Caledonia Received 6 June 1996; revised and accepted 11 October 1996 With 76 % of its 3063 native species of flora endemic, the New Caledonia biodiversity hotspot has long been recognized as having a high potential for conservation. Under the new IUCN Red List categories, 25 % of the endemic plants are at risk (Conservation Dependent, Vulnerable, Endan- gered, Critically Endangered), and five species are already extinct. A review of their distribution demonstrates that 83 % of the threatened species do not occur at all in a conservation area, and only 11 % have their conservation status improved by a protected area. The protected area network is geographically and floristically very unbalanced, with the rainforest and high altitude maquis in the south concentrating most of the conservation effort. Conversely, the middle and northern segments of the island, as well as all of the dry west coast, are left without adequate conservation area. Two vegetation types, the sclerophyll forest and the unique low/middle altitude maquis, are virtually totally unprotected. We conclude that the current network of protected areas needs to be consid- erably expanded, in terms of both geographical/floristic subregions within New Caledonia and vegetation type covered. With only 54 % of the conservation area covered by strict mining restric- tions, existing reserves need to have their conservation efficiency improved by a more vigorous enforcement of their status, and by extending mining bans to all of them.

Donovan,2 Je´romeˆ Munzinger,3 Alain THE NATIVE BEES OF NEW Pauly,4 and Gordon McPherson5 CALEDONIA1 ABSTRACT The flower-visiting records for the 43 species of bees considered to be native to New Caledonia show that females of 21 species visited 116 native species of plants in 69 genera and 41 families, and the bees were documented to carry pollen from 64 species and possibly four more. The plant families with the greatest number of species documented for visits by female bees were, in descending order: Myrtaceae (21), Dilleniaceae (10), Cunoniaceae (nine), Araliaceae (seven), Fabaceae (seven, encompassing the Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae, and Papilionoideae), Goodeniaceae (five), Proteaceae (five), Apocynaceae (four), Sapindaceae (four), and remaining families with one to three species. Females of six and possibly one more species carried pollen from each of Dilleniaceae and Myrtaceae, six carried pollen from Araliaceae, five from Goodeniaceae, four and possibly one more from Cunoniaceae, four from each of Fabaceae and Sapindaceae, and none to three from the remaining 34 families observed. For introduced plants, female bees of 12 species visited 54 species in 43 genera among 19 plant families and were documented to carry pollen from 31 and possibly one more species. For introduced plants, families with the highest number of species visited by female bees, in descending order, were: Asteraceae (12); Fabaceae (eight); Verbenaceae (seven); and Euphorbiaceae, Myrtaceae, and Solanaceae each with three. The remaining 13 families had either one or two species visited by bees. Females of seven species of bees carried pollen from Fabaceae, six from Asteraceae, three each from Myrtaceae and Solanaceae, and none to ‘‘2 þ 1?’’ (two or possibly three) from remaining families.
