    Bassem Eid BIOGRAPHY POLITICAL ANALYST, COMMENTATOR AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST ARAB AND PALESTINIAN AFFAIRS Bassem Eid is a Jerusalem-based political analyst, human rights pioneer and expert commentator in Arab and Palestinian affairs. Bassem Eid was born in the Jordanian-occupied Old City in East Jerusalem, whose place of residence became the United Nations Refugee Works Agency (UNRWA) refugee camp of Shuafat. Bassem Eid spent the first 33 years of his life in Shuafat. He rose to prominence during the first Intifada, the Palestinian uprising and was a senior field researcher for B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories. In 1996, he founded the Jerusalem- based Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group. In 2016, Bassem assumed the role of chairman of the Center for Near East Policy Research. Human rights work Bassem Eid publicly condemned the widespread murder of Palestinian dissidents, often for reasons unrelated to the Intifada. In 1995, following his report about the Palestinian Preventative Security Service, he came under attack by some Palestinian leaders for revealing human rights violations committed by the Palestinian Authority (PA). He continued his criticisms of human rights policies of both Israeli and Palestinian armed forces. Arrested by Arafats' Presidential Guard (Force 17), he was released after 25 hours following widespread international condemnation. In response to the deterioration of the human rights situation under the PA, Bassem founded the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG), which monitors abuses committed by the PA and also deals to some extent with Israel. It is a non-partisan human rights organization, dedicated to exposing human rights violations and supporting a democratic and pluralistic Palestine.

    About the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs ®¯¢Ú© ‰È„Ó ¯Â·Èˆ ÈÈÈÚÏ ÈÓÏ˘Â¯È‰ ÊίӉ The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs was founded in 1976 by the late Professor Daniel J. Elazar as an independent, non-profit institute for policy research and education. Since that time, the Center has produced Justus Reid Weiner hundreds of studies by leading experts on a wide range of topics relating to the Middle East. Justus Reid Weiner received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law and his BA from Colgate University. He is currently a Scholar-in-Residence at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. The author’s professional publications have appeared in leading law journals and intellectual magazines. He teaches courses on international law and international business at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, lectures widely abroad, and was a visiting Assistant Professor at Boston SOCIETY HUMAN RIGHTS OF CHRISTIANS IN PALESTINIAN University School of Law. Previously Weiner practiced law as an associate in the litigation department of the international law firm White & Case. Weiner also served as a senior attorney at the Israel Ministry of Justice specializing in human rights and other facets of public international law. Palestinian Christians are a religious minority whose unique interests and problems have received scant attention. They are a group that has faced almost uninterrupted persecution in the years since the Oslo peace process began, suffering from the difficulties of being a religious minority living in a Palestinian Authority whose inner workings, both from a legal and societal perspective, are often governed by strict adherence to Muslim religious law.

Bassem Eid is a Jerusalem-based political analyst, and commentator on Arab and Palestinian affairs. As I learned on a recent trip, South E Africans especially display an interest in solving the problem, even more, or so it seems to me, than the Israelis and Palestinians themselves. And others far away point to the South African history of apartheid as a warning to Israel about its occupation or alleged discrimination against Palestinians. Unfortunately, almost all of those so ostensibly dedicated to finding a solution have their own agendas, and these may not be to the advantage of either Palestinians or Israelis. A prime case in point is the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement. As a Palestinian dedicated to working for peace and reconciliation between my people and our Israeli neighbors, I do not believe that the BDS advocates are helping our cause. On the contrary, they are just creating more hatred, enmity, and polarization. Recently, I was asked to talk at the University of Johannesburg. I criticized Israel for its settlements in the occupied West Bank, and the Palestinian Authority (PA) for its lack of leadership in helping the Palestinians, and then began to speak about the BDS movement. At this point, my talk was disrupted by students wearing BDS and other radical T- shirts.
