The Urban Male Leadership Program

10 YEARS & BEYOND… DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

INAUGURAL AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIP BRUNCH

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2017 THE EASTWOOD MANOR 3371 EASTCHESTER ROAD BRONX, 10469

President of Lehman College

The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York today appointed Dr. José L. Cruz, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Califor- nia State University, Fullerton, and a frequent speaker and writer on higher ed- ucation issues, as the third president of Herbert H. Lehman College in . Chancellor James B. Milliken recommended Cruz’s appointment fol- lowing a nationwide search.

The selection, approved unanimously by the Board’s Executive Committee, is effective August 15, 2016. The search was conducted by a Board committee chaired by Trustee Valerie Beal that included trustees, faculty, students, an alumnus and a CUNY college president. Cruz replaces President Ricardo R. Fernández, who has led Lehman with great distinction for 26 years through a period of significant expansion and is CUNY’s longest-serving among the Uni- versity’s current presidents.

Chancellor James B. Milliken called Cruz, an electrical engineer and inventor in addition to his admin- istrative and other leadership roles, “an outstanding choice” to head Lehman, which has expanded de- gree programs, its technological infrastructure and science and research facilities in recent years. “Dr. Cruz is a proven academic leader who has accomplished much at one of the largest and most diverse public universities in the nation,” the Chancellor said. “He is an experienced and effective academic administrator with an impressive record of achievements. His dedication to high academic quality, to enhancing college access for low-income and underrepresented students, and improving graduation

rates and achievement gaps, will serve Lehman College and CUNY well.”

Cruz became Cal State Fullerton’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Professor of Computer Engineering, in 2012. As provost of the 39,000-student university, he has been responsible for the strategic and operational initiatives of eight colleges and a variety of other academic and admin- istrative units, and for managing an annual budget of approximately $260 million, among many other responsibilities.

He previously served as Vice President of Higher Education Policy and Practice at The Education Trust in Washington, D.C., an advocacy and research organization dedicated to high academic achievement at all levels. There, Cruz oversaw the national Access to Success Initiative and was involved in efforts to regulate the for-profit college industry and protect the federal Pell Grant program. Cruz is also a former Vice President for Student Affairs of the 11-campus University of Puerto Rico system, where he also served as the coordinator of UPR’s strategic planning efforts. He is a former faculty member at UPR- Mayaguez, where he received early promotion to the rank of professor and chaired the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and as Dean of Academic Affairs.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Cruz has published extensively in scientific journals and international conferences and his scientific work has been funded by federal and state agencies, private foundations, individual donors, private investors and corporations. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electri- cal and Electronics Engineers and a National Science Foundation Career Award recipient, serves on the boards of directors of The Education Trust and the national Association of Chief Academic Officers, and is a faculty member of the Western Academic Leadership Academy.

Cruz received his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from University of Puerto Rico- Mayaguez, and his master’s and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He has a professional certification from the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard Universi- ty’s Graduate School of Education.

UMLP Inaugural Awards & Scholarship Brunch February 25, 2017 3 Lehman College BMI Director Greetings

MICHAEL A. DEAS, Director The Urban Male Leadership Program Lehman College

Greetings, I am delighted to welcome you to the Urban Male Leadership Program Inaugural Awards & Scholarship Brunch. The Urban Male Leadership Program at Lehman College (UMLP), now in its tenth full year of operation, is designed to facilitate the successful transition of first-year and transfer students to Lehman College. The UMLP also provides support to con- tinuing students by strengthening academic skills, personal development, and character enrich- ment. While UMLP support services are available to all students, this program focuses on the recruitment, retention, persistence and overall success of historically underrepresented Black and Latino undergraduate males. The Division of Student Affairs at Lehman College recognized its responsibility and opportunity to take an active role in establishing and introducing the Urban Male Leadership Program. This initiative continues to be at the forefront of providing a Circle of Support Mentor- ship Program to empower and assist not only UMLP participants as they matriculate, but also to extend outreach to the community colleges and high schools throughout the Bronx catchment area. Here at Lehman College we continue to strive to increase retention rates and close the graduation rate gap for men of color. In May 2015, the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama, visited Lehman College to offi- cially launch the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a new independent non-profit foundation that works to expand opportunities nationwide for all young men of color. President Obama’s admin- istration invited the Urban Male Leadership Program to be part of this auspicious event. The City University of New York Black Male Initiative (BMI) for more than a decade has imple- mented similar strategies and tasks for improving the life outcomes of all young people with a specific emphasis on Black and Latino males who have been historically under-represented in higher education. The CUNY BMI ensures that they too can reach their full potential, regard- less of who they are, where they come from, or the circumstances into which they are born. In conclusion, I am humbled and honored that you chose to be part of this Inaugural Awards & Scholarship Brunch. It is my hope and intention that this fundraiser will serve as a long-term, annual vehicle to provide financial assistance to our UMLP students through scholar- ships that will subsidize required textbooks, and provide assistance with graduate and profession- al school costs. Through these endeavors the UMLP seeks to bring forth greatness...one student at a time. Sincerely, Michael A. Deas Michael A. Deas, LMSW Director, Urban Male Leadership Program

Ruben Diaz Jr. first entered public office as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1997, and is currently serving his second full term as Bronx Borough President, having been reelected in November 2013 with more than 89 percent of the vote.

As borough president, Ruben Diaz Jr. has led the implementation of a robust agenda—on economic develop- ment, housing, education, and public safety—in every corner of the borough. The Bronx has seen over $9.4 billion in new development of all kinds since Borough President Diaz took office in 2009. This includes more than 23,000 new units of housing, and thousands of new jobs.

More than 15,000 new jobs have been created in The Bronx since 2009, thanks in large part to the continued partnership between Borough President Diaz, the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation and those seeking to do business in the borough. As a result of those efforts, the unemployment rate in The Bronx has been cut nearly in half, and 100,000 more Bronx residents have jobs today than when Borough President Diaz took office seven years ago.

Borough President Diaz has also put forward a robust legislative agenda, having led the charge for a new “living wage” law in , which passed in May 2012 and requires developers that receive heavy taxpayer funding for their project to pay the employees of that development a “living wage.” Borough Presi- dent Diaz has also put forward legislation to a letter grading system for nail salons and other cosmetolo- gy businesses and to develop a public registry of felony gun offenders.

On health, Borough President Diaz has also launched the his “#Not62” Initiative, aimed at improving social and economic factors that will help promote more positive health behaviors within for Bronx residents, includ- ing help attain better access to clinical care as well as well improve social and economic factors. In October 2015, The Bronx received The RWJF Culture of Health Prize, which honors communities which place a high priority on health and bring partners together to drive local change, in recognition of those efforts.

Since taking office in 2009 Borough President Diaz has provided millions in funding to projects of all types in every Bronx neighborhood, including new technology upgrades to borough schools, green roofs and boiler up- grades, park improvements and more.

In the State Assembly, Ruben Diaz Jr. served as Chair of the Committee on Election Law and on the Assem- bly’s Standing Committees on Education, Ways & Means, Children and Families, Environmental Conserva- tion and Transportation. He was also a member of the Assembly’s Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force and the Black/Puerto Rican and Asian Legislative Caucus.

CLEVELAND E. BECKETT, JR., MPA Assistant Director The Urban Male Leadership Program Lehman College

Greetings,

This academic year commemorates the tenth anniversary of the Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College, “10 Years & Beyond: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders.” The UMLP is dedicated to providing quality comprehensive student support in academic intervention services, mentorship and leadership development, to further the recruitment, academic retention and success of UMLP students. Through student engagement our students excel academically and become thoughtful lead- ers, with a greater collective social awareness on the Lehman College campus and within their communities.

UMLP Director, Mr. Michael A. Deas and I remain committed to providing additional vehicles to further program capacity, and increase academic persistence and graduation rates. In my capacity as UMLP Assistant Director, I possess administrative management for a broad array of UMLP initiatives, such as serving as representative for the City University of New York Black Male Initiative (CUNY BMI) Project Funded Monthly Meetings; as well as the Assessment Committee and Experiential Learning Committees within the Division of Student Affairs.

The UMLP Director assigned me the challenging task of coordinating this morning’s inaugural UMLP Awards & Scholarship Brunch Fundraiser. The overall goal of this initiative, is to offer scholarships and financial assistance to current UMLP students and alumni, interested in maintaining their academic standing at Lehman College, or preparing for graduate and professional examinations. During this effort, I personally coordinated the outreach and confirmation of event honorees, and secured numerous external event sponsorships in support of the UMLP mission to facilitate the retention and graduation of predomi- nately African American and Latino Males at Lehman College.

Today’s event solidifies the investment made between the UMLP and our promising college student leaders. Your participation in this event serves as a unique opportunity to stimulate and advance the collec- tive achievement of our students, to assume the vanguard of leadership as the next generation of leaders. This opportunity has enabled me to utilize my strategic planning skills and substantive external relationships through professional experiences in the governmental, not-for-profit and private sectors to develop dynamic potential partnerships, to support UMLP students and advance the organizational mission to provide addi- tional cognitive learning and academic skills.

We thank you and look forward to your continued support. I sincerely appreciate the dynamic sup- port of the UMLP staff, Lehman College community and event sponsors. 6 UMLP Inaugural Awards & Scholarship Brunch February 25, 2017 BMI University Director of CUNY

JERMAINE WRIGHT, University Director Black Male Initiative City University of New York

Greetings Attendees,

On behalf of the entire City University of New York Black Male Initiative (CUNY BMI) community, I would like to congratulate the Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College on their Inaugural Awards & Scholarship Brunch and ten year anniversary. CUNY BMI is a University-wide student development initiative with more than 30 projects that aim to increase matriculation, retention and graduation rates of un- derrepresented students, particularly men of color. BMI is one expression of CUNY’s commitment to access and diversity. BMI projects are open to all academically eligible students, faculty and staff, without regard for race, gender or national origin. CUNY BMI works in six strategic areas (Diversity Recruitment, Culturally Competent Peer-to-Peer Mentoring, Academic Enhancements, Social Emotional Learning, Institutional Commitment and Ad- visory Committee) to reach its overall goals of increasing enrollment of students from demographic groups severely underrepresented, particularly men of color, in higher education and providing academic and cultural supports to assist program participants in successfully completing their undergraduate course of study and graduating.

Diversity Recruitment utilizes strategies that increase enrollment of underrepresented students, particularly males, both at CUNY as a whole, and in the many programs offered by BMI. Culturally Competent Peer-to-Peer Mentoring includes a peer-to-peer mentoring model where high performing upper classmen are trained to be peer mentors to assist lower classmen, however there is an acknowledgment of cultural differences such as race/ ethnicity, gender, ability, class, and sexuality and training to help mentors and mentees understand these differ- ences. Academic Enhancements provide an additional layer of academic support through tutoring and supplemental academic programs (i.e. blocked classes specifically for BMI students, learning communities, peer led tutoring, group tutoring, and study groups) that provide direct accountability to all of the students participating in the project. Social Emotional Learning includes activities that assist CUNY BMI participants in acquiring and effectively ap- plying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible deci- sions. Institutional Commitment involves developing relationships with senior leaders as stakeholders within the institution to assist in securing space and supplemental financial support for the BMI project. Lastly, each BMI pro- ject has an Advisory Committee to assist in development of the project, provide and/or garner resources for the pro- ject, and serve as ambassadors for the project.

As one of our 31 projects designed to strengthen the education pipeline for severely underrepresented populations in higher education, particularly men of color, UMLP has helped to increase the enrollment, reten- tion, and graduation rates of these students at Lehman. Now with ten years of growth and success, UMLP is in need of more financial commitments. Will you answer the call? Best regards,

Jermaine Wright University Director, The City University of New York Black Male Initiative Central Office of Student Affairs

ERNEST LOGAN, President, Council of School Supervisors & Administrators Four-term CSA President Ernest Logan has worked as a New York City public school teacher, principal, and administrator over the course of his more than forty-year career as an educator. He was elected CSA's 13th President in Nov. 2006 and re-elected in 2009, 2012, and 2016.

Mr. Logan graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1969 and SUNY Cortland in 1973. He went on to receive his master’s degree in Ed- ucation from City University of New York’s Baruch College. Soon after graduating from SUNY Cortland, Mr. Logan was hired as an English teacher at P.S. 224, Dist-19, in Brooklyn. Five years later he was promoted to Curriculum Writ- er for the Office of Curriculum and Development. In 1983, Mr. Logan was named Assistant Principal at JHS 263, Dist-23, Brooklyn, and in 1991, was appointed Principal of I.S. 55, also Dist-23. As Principal, Mr. Logan served his CSA colleagues as Dist-23 Chairman from 1993 until Fall 1997, when he took a leave of absence to join the CSA staff as Director of Community School Districts, a position in which he worked in the field protecting his colleagues' legal rights under their union contract.

In March 2000, the Executive Board chose Mr. Logan as First Vice President to fill a vacancy created when Donald Singer, then-President of CSA, moved to work full-time at the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA). A few months later, running with then CSA President Jill Levy, Mr. Logan was elected Executive Vice President, a position he retained through the 2003 election. Ms. Levy chose not to in 2006 and Mr. Logan won the CSA Presidency in an unopposed election. As CSA President, Mr. Logan and his leadership team have negotiated several labor contracts with the Depart- ment of Education that have provided substantial salary increases and work improvements, including retroactive pay for new CSA members leaving teaching positions and a career ladder for the union's 760 Education Administrators. These and other benefits were achieved through Mr. Logan’s steady leader- ship during often difficult negotiations with the City. Mr. Logan has forged relationships with city and state officials, and understands the importance of "bridge building" in order to secure legislation, fund- ing, resources and policies that enable CSA members to perform their professional duties. Just as he de- mands the city live up to its contract, Mr. Logan also believes in high standards and accountability from his members. In addition to his responsibilities at CSA, Mr. Logan is Executive VP of AFSA and serves on its General Executive Board. He sits on the Board of Directors for the New Visions for Public Schools, The SUNY-Cortland Foundation, the NY Research Alliance, and on the NYC Independent Budget Office Advisory Board.

Mr. Logan belongs to numerous organizations including St. John's University's Phi Delta Kappa chapter, the NY Alliance of Black School Educators, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the NY Academy of Public Education, and 100 Black Men. He is a life member of the Association of Black Educators of NY. He has served on the board of the Brownsville Community Development Cor- poration and is a Deacon and Trustee of Harlem’s Mount Calvary Baptist Church, the church he has at- tended for most of his life.

Mr. Logan has received numerous awards, including City & State Magazine’s 2016 Lifetime Achieve- ment Award and the 2015 Distinguished Leader in Education award from Education Update. Labor Press named Mr. Logan its 2015 Labor Leader of the Year. Mr. Logan and his wife, Beatrice, a retired high school guidance counselor, have established the Ernest A. Logan Scholarship at SUNY Cortland, which provides tuition assistance for NYC public school students. Mr. Logan is the new Executive VP of AFSA and serves on its General Executive Board.

UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Program Mentoring programs have been proven to be an effective strat- egy for college retention and persistence. The UMLP continues to strengthen its successful Circle of Support Mentorship Program (CSMP) which links first-year and transfer students with Lehman faculty and staff, as well as peer mentors. In addition, existing mentor-mentee pairs continue to be supported.

The UMLP CSMP has a Peer Mentoring component in the pro- gram. UMLP Ambassadors serve as Peers for incoming fresh- man (especially the UMLP LEH 100 students) and are selected based on their upper division status and their commitment to the mission of the UMLP. The mentorship coordinator conducts ongoing training, student mentorship team building and continue to identify new student mentors as needed. The mentorship coordina- tor monitors and tracks the mentoring progress through online sur- veys administered to the mentors and mentees as well as one-on- one conversations.
