Petersen Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee Knoxville, TN 37919-1100 Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract—The Morrill Act of 1862 afforded the US states the opportunity to found state colleges with agriculture as part of their mission—the so-called “land-grant colleges.” The Hatch Act of 1887 gave the same opportunity for agricultural experiment stations as functions of the land-grant colleges, and the “third Morrill Act” (the Smith-Lever Act) of 1914 added an extension dimension to the experiment stations. Overall, the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th was a time for growing appreciation for, and growth of institutional education in the natural sciences, especially botany and its specialties, mycology, and phytopathology. This paper outlines a particular genealogy of mycologists and plant pathologists representative of this era. Professor Albert Nelson Prentiss, first of Michigan State then of Cornell, Professor William Russel Dudley of Cornell and Stanford, Professor Mason Blanchard Thomas of Wabash College, and Professor Herbert Hice Whetzel of Cornell Plant Pathology were major players in the scenario. This books tells the story of the School of Forestry at the University of California in such terms. The end of the first 50 years oi forestry education at Berkeley pro ides a unique moment to look back at what has beenachieved. A remarkable number of those who occupied key roles in establishing the forestry cur- riculum are with us today to throw the light of personal recollection and insight on these five decades. In addition, time has already given perspective to the accomplishments of many graduates. The School owes much to the California Alumni Foresters Association for their interest in seizing this opportunity. Without the initiative and sustained effort that the alunmi gave to the task, the opportunity would have been lost and the School would have been denied a valuable recapitulation of its past. Although this book is called a history, this name may be both unfair and misleading. If it were about an individual instead of an institution it might better be called a personal memoir. Those who have been most con- cerned with the task of writing it have perhaps been too close to the School to provide objective history. But if anything is lost on this score, it is more than regained by the personalized nature of the account. -

KF;CK Carnegie Institution of Washington, Stanford University, California INTRODUCTION Theories as to the origin of the Hawaiian islands and the deriva tion of their flora and fauna have appeared with frequency and aroused the greatest interest among biologists. Probably no other region in the world has developed so extraordinary a degree of endemism, which, according to Hillebrand (9) 1, for the indigenous vascular plants is 75.93 percent. Much more recent figures for the indigenous flowering plants given by Campbell (5) reach the remark able figure of 9°04 percent! This endemism is directly connected with the fact that the Hawaiian Archipelago is the most isolated area of equal size in the world. There have been many advocates of the theory that the Hawaiian islands are of oceanic origin, that they were elevated from the bottom of the ocean by volcanic action, and that they have always been completely isolated. Others have taken the opposing view that the islands have not always been so isolated, but may even be considered of continental origin. Those with the latter viewpoint believe that the present archipelago represents but the tips of volcanic mountain masses superimposed upon a large block that has undergone sub sidence. For instance, Campbell (4) believes there may have been a more or less direct connection. -

The manual was designed as a resource for a native tree and shrub identification course, Natural Resources 222 that was one of the required courses for all forestry and natural resource majors at the college. The course and the supporting manual were aimed almost exclusively for forestry and related majors. In addition to NR 222 being taught by professor Whaley, it has also been taught by Homer Bowen (MJC 19xx -), Marlies Boyd (MJC 199X – present), Richard Nimphius (MJC 1980 – 2006) and currently Ron Alves (MJC 1974 – 2004). Each instructor put their own particular emphasis and style on the course but it was always oriented toward forestry students until 2006. The lack of forestry majors as a result of the Agriculture Department not having a full time forestry instructor to recruit students and articulate with industry has resulted in a transformation of the NR 222 course. The clientele not only includes forestry major, but also landscape designers, environmental horticulture majors, nursery people, environmental science majors, and people interested in transforming their home and business landscapes to a more natural venue. -

Srnithsonian Contributions to Botany, number 12, 186 pages, 3 figures, frontispiece, 1973.--In the first part, the development of a computer-based system for storing and retrieving infonna- tion about botanical type specimens is described from its pilot stage to its present operational stage. The concept, purpose, and scope are explained, and the operational procedures are outlined. Ways of using and contributing to this computerized register of types, both in the short-run and in the longrun, are proposed. A statistical summary of the content of the Type Register as of 30 September 1972 is given. Over 13,000 specimens representing more than 10,000 taxa have been registered. The second part consists of a Catalog of more than' 1,000 specimens representing over 600 taxa of the genus Carex (Cyperaceae), which are deposited in ten major American herbaria, and the Catalog is cross- indexed five different ways: by author, publication date, collector, country, and herbarium. An introduction summarizes the preparation and editing of the Catalog. This Carex Catalog represents the first published installment of the Type Register and as such is intended to serve as an example. -

October 18, 2004 The Flowering of Natural History Institutions in California Barbara Ertter University and Jepson Herbaria, University of California Berkeley, California 94720-2465; Email: [email protected] The genesis and early years of a diversity of natural history institutions in California are presented as a single intertwined narrative, focusing on interactions among a selection of key individuals (mostly botanists) who played multiple roles. The California Academy of Sciences was founded in 1853 by a group of gentleman schol- ars, represented by Albert Kellogg. Hans Hermann Behr provided an input of pro- fessional training the following year. The establishment of the California Geological Survey in 1860 provided a further shot in the arm, with Josiah Dwight Whitney, William Henry Brewer, and Henry Nicholas Bolander having active roles in both the Survey and the Academy. When the Survey foundered, Whitney diverted his efforts towards ensuring a place for the Survey collections within the fledgling University of California. The collections became the responsibility of Joseph LeConte, one of the newly recruited faculty. LeConte developed a shared passion for Yosemite Valley with John Muir, who he met through Ezra and Jeanne Carr. Muir also developed a friendship with Kellogg, who became estranged from the Academy following the contentious election of 1887, which was purportedly instigated by Mary Katherine Curran. -

The Dudley Herbarium Including a case study of Terman’s restructuring of the biology department BY SARA TIMBY he history of the Dudley Herbarium embodies an intellectual tradition that spans a hundred years of fieldwork and publishing. The herbarium’s curators trained several generations of researchers, educators, and public and private land-use managers and fought hard to protect our forests, rangelands, and wetlands. It is exciting history, full of tales of exploration, political fights, and personal conflicts. The herbarium’s fate at TStanford is also a fascinating story, illuminating aspects of university decision-making and changes in the discipline of the biological sciences. Provost Frederick E.
