Petersen Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee Knoxville, TN 37919-1100 Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract—The Morrill Act of 1862 afforded the US states the opportunity to found state colleges with agriculture as part of their mission—the so-called “land-grant colleges.” The Hatch Act of 1887 gave the same opportunity for agricultural experiment stations as functions of the land-grant colleges, and the “third Morrill Act” (the Smith-Lever Act) of 1914 added an extension dimension to the experiment stations. Overall, the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th was a time for growing appreciation for, and growth of institutional education in the natural sciences, especially botany and its specialties, mycology, and phytopathology. This paper outlines a particular genealogy of mycologists and plant pathologists representative of this era. Professor Albert Nelson Prentiss, first of Michigan State then of Cornell, Professor William Russel Dudley of Cornell and Stanford, Professor Mason Blanchard Thomas of Wabash College, and Professor Herbert Hice Whetzel of Cornell Plant Pathology were major players in the scenario. College of Engineering, Nagpur,Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT Our project proposes the use of waste plastic PET bottles as construction entity to standardised bricks. As plastics are non biodegradable its disposal has always been a problem. Waste plastic bottles are major cause of solid waste disposal. Polyethylene tetra phthalate is commonly used for carbonated beverage and water bottles. This is an environmental issue as waste plastic bottles are difficult to biodegrade and involves processes either to recycle or reuse. Today the construction industry is in need of finding cost effective materials for increasing the strength of structures. This project deals with the possibility of using waste PET bottles as a partial replacement. So, to decrease the cost of building materials here is a plan to build a house with PET bottle and binding material blast furnace slag .Bottle wall construction also avoids emission of gases like CO, CO2, SO2, NO, HCN as happened in manufacturing of bricks. -

Alcázar Garden - Balboa Park Richard Smith Requa 1881 - 1941 Seventy years later, the Moorish tiles were beginning to show their age. Tiles were cracked, chipped, and had chunks missing. In 2008, the garden was reconstructed to replicate the 1935 design by San Diego architect Richard Requa. During the restoration they found that moisture had seeped through, as tiles are porous and grout isn't perfect. With $50,000 in donations, the Committee of One Hundred, a nonprofit group dedicated to the park's Spanish Colonial architecture, replaced the damaged tiles and renovated the water fountains to their original grace and glory. The group commissioned 1,800 tiles that replicate the originals. This books tells the story of the School of Forestry at the University of California in such terms. The end of the first 50 years oi forestry education at Berkeley pro ides a unique moment to look back at what has beenachieved. A remarkable number of those who occupied key roles in establishing the forestry cur- riculum are with us today to throw the light of personal recollection and insight on these five decades. In addition, time has already given perspective to the accomplishments of many graduates. The School owes much to the California Alumni Foresters Association for their interest in seizing this opportunity. Without the initiative and sustained effort that the alunmi gave to the task, the opportunity would have been lost and the School would have been denied a valuable recapitulation of its past. Although this book is called a history, this name may be both unfair and misleading. If it were about an individual instead of an institution it might better be called a personal memoir. Those who have been most con- cerned with the task of writing it have perhaps been too close to the School to provide objective history. But if anything is lost on this score, it is more than regained by the personalized nature of the account. -

And it supports percent – said “yes.” So the issue isn’t whether consumers want their flowers to innovative florists, shops, and studios come from nearby farms and their purchases to benefit local farm who (like those progressive chefs) economies. Rather, it’s an issue of transparency, choice, and access. My interest in the revival of domestic cut flowers has taken me believe that local sourcing is a core across the country to meet growers raising beautiful crops on small and large farms from Alaska to Florida, from the Southwest to New principle of their company values. Then, I spent one full year creating a floral arrangement every week, using only what my garden provided or what I procured from local flower farms in my region, the Pacific Northwest. -

Amero Images from the Article After five years of unrelenting effort, San Diego celebrated the official opening of the Panama- California Exposition in Balboa Park on January 1, 1915. At midnight, December 31, President Woodrow Wilson, in Washington, D.C., pressed a Western Union telegraph key. The signal turned on every light on the grounds and touched off a display of fireworks. The gates to the Exposition swung open. A crush of from 31,836 to 42,486 people on the grounds cheered, waved banners, threw confetti, sang "I Love You California," and snake-danced their way to the Isthmus, or fun street.1 Among the guests who took part in the official but sparsely attended ceremonies, beginning at 11:30 the following morning, were Secretary of the Treasury William G. McAdoo, Commander of the U.S. Pacific fleet Rear Admiral T.B. Howard, Director-General of the Pan-American Union John Barrett, and Spanish delegate Count del Valle de Salazar.2 In his speech to the guests, wearied from the festivities of the night before, Gilbert Aubrey Davidson, president of the Panama-California Exposition Company, declared the Exposition's purpose was to build an empire extending from the back country of the Pacific slope to the west shores of the Missouri River.3 At one point Davidson said: Here is pictured in this happy combination of splendid temples, the story of the friars, the thrilling tale of the pioneers, the orderly conquest of commerce, coupled with the hopes of an El Dorado where life can expand in this fragrant land of opportunity. -
