  • The White Animals
The 5outh 'r Greatert Party Band Playr Again: Narhville 'r Legendary White AniMalr Reunite to 5old-0ut Crowdr By Elaine McArdle t's 10 p.m. on a sweltering summer n. ight in Nashville and standing room only at the renowned Exit/In bar, where the crowd - a bizarre mix of mid Idle-aged frat rats and former punk rockers - is in a frenzy. Some drove a day or more to get here, from Florida or Arizona or North Carolina. Others flew in from New York or California, even the Virgin Islands. One group of fans chartered a jet from Mobile, Ala. With scores of people turned away at the door, the 500 people crushed into the club begin shouting song titles before the music even starts. "The White Animals are baaaaaaack!" bellows one wild-eyed thirty something, who appears mainstream in his khaki shorts and docksiders - until you notice he reeks of patchouli oil and is dripping in silver-and-purple mardi gras beads, the ornament of choice for White Animals fans. Next to him, a mortgage banker named Scott Brown says he saw the White Animals play at least 20 times when he was an undergrad at the University of Tennessee. He wouldn't have missed this long-overdue reunion - he saw both the Friday and Saturday shows - for a residential closing on Mar-A-Lago. Lead singer Kevin Gray, a one-time medical student who dropped his stud ies in 1978 to work in the band fulltime, steps onto the stage and peers out into the audience, recognizing faces he hasn't seen in more than a decade.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Practice It's Just a Rumour That Was Spread Around
The Clang Group – Practice It’s just a rumour that was spread around town. It said there was a star that few had ever heard of. But that few included David Bowie, Morrissey and Elvis Costello and he’d produced them all. Also, this man had a band called Deaf School and they’d inspired many other bands from Dexys Midnight Runners to Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It’s time Clive “Clanger” Langer was known by more than a few. He is a quietly- spoken, bespectacled pop wizard from North London who (with his studio partner Alan Winstanley) made Come On Eileen and what seems like a hundred hits for Madness. He’s a songwriter, too. When Robert Wyatt broke our collective hearts with that great immortal sigh of a song called Shipbuilding, it was Langer’s music he was singing. A little while ago our secret star had a significant birthday. “At the age of 60,” he says, “I decided to start another band. I got The Clang Group together and I achieved what I wanted. Which was to play on my 60th birthday.” Forty years on from their inception at Liverpool art college, Langer’s first band Deaf School still record and tour, but not often enough for his taste. Nor for their keyboardist John Wood and drummer Gregg Braden: “Deaf School is like getting the circus out. And we wanted a band that could just go and play.” So this core trio did get out and play, with guest appearances by friends such as Andy Mackay of Roxy Music, whose sax you can hear on this record.

Retro Rewind: “London Calling” by The Clash Maxwell Patton August 3, 2020 Rock music in its various styles would in no way, shape, or form be what it is today without the influence of a certain British punk icon known as The Clash. Even though the band lays claim to one of the shortest lifespans in my Retro Rewind reviews (being active for only a decade), they have had a massive amount of influence on the rock realm with their distinctly political lyrics and driving, guitar-centered instrumentals. Their third record, by far their most popular, is the subject of my review today: the 1979 double album “London Calling,” which is viewed by many as a definitive album in the punk genre. Released on Dec. 14, 1979, the record contains 19 songs of varying styles and was supported by three singles: the title track “London Calling,” “Clampdown,” and “Train in Vain (Stand by Me).” The themes delved into throughout the album include unemployment, the usage of drugs, paranoia, and depression.
