Mark Weiss ‐ 845 528‐8569 (H) Or 646 567‐6185 (C) Or Mweiss@Operationrespect.Org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Mark Weiss ‐ 845 528‐8569 (H) or 646 567‐6185 (C) or [email protected] On Friday, May 13, Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present Sacred Harp Singing with Tim Eriksen, an evening of community singing and a performance by the Tim Eriksen Trio. Mr. Eriksen will be at the Putnam Valley High School in the afternoon at 1 pm to lead a singing session with students; he will then hold a Sacred Harp Singing Workshop from 5 to 6 pm at Tompkins Corners followed by an evening performance at 7:30. Sacred Harp Shape Note singing is non‐denominational American choral music from the 19th century. This way of singing started in New England and spread through the South. It was communicated through songbooks at community gatherings. It is a powerful musical experience that emphasizes participation, and the workshop that will be held prior to the concert will encourage members of the community to learn and be part of this unique musical event. This program is made possible, in part, through the Putnam Arts Council's Arts Link Grant Program, which is funded with public funds through the NYS Council on the Arts with support from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature and with public funds from Putnam County. The presentation promises to be a remarkable opportunity to join with the text, the sound, the style and the feel of special American music. We invite the public to join a musical happening that is unlike anything else. Reading music is not required. There is a special “shape note” system, in which the sounds of fa sol la are represented as squares, triangles and circles that can be applied to any singing key. This music is often referred to as “Fa Sol La” singing. Some of the songs were composed in the 1790s and make special religious references. Tim Eriksen is a great exponent and teacher of Sacred Harp. He was a consultant and performer in the film, “Cold Mountain”, and led the film to a great session in rural Alabama whose singers eventually performed on the Grammy awards. He is a musician, musicologist, and professor. He is also a powerful performer, ballad singer, and was leader of the punk/folk band “Cordelia’s Dad”. The band has released nine full‐length albums, played festivals, including The Newport Folk Festival, and toured with notable bands Nirvana, Uncle Tupelo, and Weezer. T‐Bone Burnett calls Eriksen “one of the best voices in music.” At Tompkins Corners, besides the Sacred Harp, The Tim Eriksen Trio will give a performance of ballads, Appalachian music, instrumentals and vocals. Their music is an expansive and moving experience. Tompkins Corners Cultural Center is located at 729 Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley, NY. Suggested donations for the workshop and performance are $10 each, but both together are available for $15. Tickets are available for either or both the workshop and the performance at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2542004. Or call 845 528‐7280 to reserve a place at either workshop or concert or both, or email [email protected] for more information. -- Tompkins Corners Cultural Center 729 Peekskill Hollow Road Putnam Valley, New York 10579 www.tompkinscorners.org (845) 528-7280 .

  • Motivations for Revivalist Participation in Sacred Harp of the Chesapeake Bay Area
ABSTRACT Title of thesis: THE PERFORMANCE OF HISTORY: MOTIVATIONS FOR REVIVALIST PARTICIPATION IN SACRED HARP OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA Brigita Lee Sebald, Master of Arts, 2005 Thesis directed by: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology Sacred Harp performance exists in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland, Virginia and southern Pennsylvania primarily inside a revivalist setting of folklore societies. Singers identify both the musical sound and the community of singe rs as their primary motivation for participating in Sacred Harp. Many singers are originally attracted to it because of its harmonies and structure and explore new repertoire through the use of recordings and attendance at conventions. The convention sys tem further enables a community with local, regional, and national levels, which then helps deepen commitment to Sacred Harp performance. Finally, singers interact with historical practices through performance, which results in a transformation and rejuve nation both of the singer and of Sacred Harp itself. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Making Jazz Space: Clubs and Creative Practice in California, Chile, and Siberia A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology by Alex Warner Rodriguez 2018 © Copyright by Alex Warner Rodriguez 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Making Jazz Space: Clubs and Creative Practice in California, Chile, and Siberia by Alex Warner Rodriguez Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Steven J. Loza, Chair Drawing from anthropological fieldwork in three jazz clubs, this dissertation explores the global scale of contemporary jazz practice through an examination of the communities that sustain them in Los Angeles, California; Santiago, Chile; and Novosibirsk, Siberia. These spaces, which bear striking similarities to one another both in terms of architectural aesthetics and community practices despite the vast distance between them, are investigated as instantiations of jazz space informed by logics of jazz listening, and as sites of jazz practice—a process that I call jazz anthropology. It argues that to understand why jazz practices continue to manifest anywhere, we must understand what they mean to people elsewhere—that is, beyond the music’s geographical centers of production on the U.S. East Coast. By attending to these peripheries, we can hear the music as a manifestation of jazz consciousness, as tendrils of black radical modes of thinking transposed to far-flung geographies—even ones that very few black people inhabit. To situate these practices in a longer genealogical timespan, the dissertation also includes brief historical ii sketches of jazz practice in each of the three locations in 1917, 1959, and 1990, demonstrating the long local histories that inform the music in each locale.

―IF I CAN REACH THE CHARMING SOUND, I‘LL TUNE MY HARP AGAIN‖: THE FASOLA TUNEBOOK PUBLICATION RENAISSANCE By A. MITCHELL V. STECKER A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF MUSIC UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2019 © 2019 A. Mitchell V. Stecker ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There are many individuals and groups whose support has facilitated the undertaking and completion of this document. First, I sincerely thank Dr. Laura Ellis and Dr. Jennifer Thomas for their time and energy spent not only on my thesis committee, but for all they both have invested in me over the better part of the past decade. I also wish to express my gratitude to the individuals and groups who gave of their time in answering questionnaires, giving interviews, and having informal conversations about this fascinating musical phenomenon, including the St. Louis Sacred Harp Singers, Professor Stephen A. Marini, and Micah Walter. I thank my parents for their unflagging support of my educational endeavors for the entirety of my life, and Sarah, whose love, encouragement, and strength are continual sources of inspiration. And finally, I would like to thank my singing friends everywhere, without the friendship and hospitality of whom I likely never would have discovered and been taken by this incredible music. How sweet the hours have passed away/Since we have met to sing and pray; How loath we are to leave the place/Where Jesus shows His smiling face. Oh could I stay with friends so kind,/How would it cheer my drooping mind! But duty makes me understand/That we must take the parting hand.

  • While Mighty Thunders Roll: Popular Artists Sing the Shakers the Artists
While Mighty Thunders Roll: Popular Artists Sing the Shakers The Artists Little Nora Brown, traditional folk singer, performs “The Saviour’s Watchword” (written in 1849 by Shakers at Canterbury, New Hampshire) and “Little Children” (1857, Pleasant Hill, Kentucky). Says the artist: “There’s ballads and old-time music, and I do that a lot, but I think, singing a cappella, it’s more pure, just to hear the sound coming from the body. And with the Shaker songs the words are deep. Sort of like poetry.” Brown, of Brooklyn, New York, plays banjo, ukulele, and accordion. She started learning ukulele at age six from the late Shlomo Pestcoe. Now thirteen, Brown is mentored by many of her favorite old-time musicians, including Alice Gerrard, John Cohen, Clifton Hicks, KC Groves, Courtney Hartman, Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Mac Traynham, John Haywood, Ali Dineen, and Brett Ratliff. She won first place in youth banjo in 2017 and 2018 at the Clifftop Appalachian String Band Music Festival in West Virginia. She has a heavy focus and interest in eastern Kentucky overhand picking and unaccompanied ballads. “Little Nora Brown has a host of roots music legends pouring out of her fingertips and through her lips.” — The Bluegrass Situation Tim Eriksen, folk and punk rock singer, performs “Farewell Earthly Joys” (1855, Canterbury, New Hampshire) and “Father James’ Song” (1783, Harvard, Massachusetts). Says the artist: “The tune of ‘Farewell Earthly Joys,’ that sense of longing, and everything about it makes it one of my favorites. That feeling of looking for something deeper, something more lasting, is certainly not out of step with contemporary thought.” Eriksen, of Amherst, Massachusetts is an American musician, musicologist, and professor.
