2 Many in Frome will recall the enormous Singer’s factory which stretched across much of the current riverside housing development opposite the Market Yard car park. The company’s work expanded into producing the castings of some truly inspiring landmark statues like Justice, which stands on top of the , or the awe-inspiring on the Thames Embankment, as well as the Scottish National War Memorial at , the King Alfred statue in , and the famous lions in Cape Town. 6 - 14 JULY // 9:30 - 17:00 THE POSTCARD IS ALWAYS INNOCENT - EARLY SOMERSET POSTCARDS There is something particularly appealing about old works of art by anonymous makers, by painters and photographers of the past whose names will never now be known; this exhibition features postcards of Somerset, the majority pre-1920 in date, many hand- tinted, all owned by local collector and writer Jeremy Cooper. The emphasis of the collection is social, on how people lived, concentrating on postcards made E.Chapman, Frome Open Studios by amateur photographers, taken in town markets and parks, in village streets, at home in the garden, at church fêtes, on holiday by the seaside, at school, and at work. FROME FESTIVAL SHORT STORY COMPETITION Frome Festival Short Story Competition is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year. With a first prize of £400 plus prizes for runners - up and local entrants, the competition attracts entries from writers both near and far. This year, novelist Tyler Keevil returns to judge the competition he won in its first year, 2004. For Tyler, and many other subsequent winners, competition success was a step on the road to a writing career.
