Received: 21 June 2019; Accepted: 16 August 2019; Published: 23 August 2019 Abstract: The green facades and living walls of vertical greenery systems (VGS) are gaining increasing importance as sustainable building design elements because they can improve the environmental impact of a building. The field could benefit from a comprehensive mapping out of VGS types, an improved classification and nomenclature system, and from linking the benefits to a specific construction type. Therefore, this research reviews existing VGS construction types and links associated benefits to them, clearly differentiating empirical from descriptive supporting data. The study adopted a scoping research review used for mapping a specific research field. A systematic literature review based on keywords identified 13 VGS construction types—four types of green facades, nine types of living walls, and ten benefits. Thermal performance, as a benefit of VGS, is the most broadly empirically explored benefit. Yet, further qualitative studies, including human perception of thermal comfort are needed. -

RESTORATION OF THE CONSERVATORY GARDEN Celebrating 35 Years of the Women’s Committee THE CONSERVATORY GARDEN | A Women’s Garden In honor of their 35th Anniversary and in collaboration with Central Park Conservancy’s Campaign, Forever Green: Ensuring the Future of Central Park, the Women’s Committee of Central Park Conservancy has committed to raise at least $5 million towards a transformative $10 million initiative to restore the Conservatory Garden, Central Park’s six-acre masterwork of formal garden design, located off Fifth Avenue from 104th to 106th Streets. History Completed in 1937 under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses’ chief landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, the Conservatory Garden became Central Park’s only formal garden. The original plans were designed by aptly-named landscape architect M. Betty Sprout, who later became Clarke’s wife. In the latter part of the 19th century, the area originally hosted a small nursery for growing plants for the Park. The name “Conservatory Garden” was adopted in 1898 when a large conservatory (greenhouse) was constructed on the site, featuring then-exotic tropical plants and ornate flower beds. After falling into disrepair, the greenhouse was demolished in 1934 and the exceptional six-acre formal outdoor garden that we now know was conceived and built. Thanks to its original designers and the Conservancy’s substantial 1983 restoration of the Garden’s horticultural elements, the Garden stands as one of the world’s great masterworks of formal garden design. Since its earliest days, horticultural direction has been in the hands of women, including Lynden Miller, who led the 1983 restoration, and long-time Garden curator Diane Schaub. -

There are two aspects of this green fund, the green wall and the vertical garden. Both demonstrate sustainable practices using current systems. The green wall was installed inside the agriculture building in October, 2013 under the guidance of the professionals who produce the system we selected. The 8’ x 9’ green garden wall was created by attaching marine plywood, a water barrier, and then a sheet of pvc to the wall. Two layers of a high quality felt were attached to the pvc as well as an irrigation system across the top. To plant, we cut a slit in the thin outer layer for each plant. Then we removed the potting soil from the plant roots and placed the plant into the pocket we had created by cutting the fabric. Next we stapled the pocket area to hold the plant into the system. The irrigation keeps the felt damp and contains the nutrients to keep the plants alive and healthy. Track lighting was installed to provide adequate lighting. The wall is healthy and continues to be a popular site to visit. The vertical garden (which are growing towers made of pvc) is seasonal and was housed in the agriculture teaching greenhouse. It included a series of towers designed to hold a soilless medium and plants in a vertical position. -

THE USE OF THE HEDGE Martha Brookes Hutcheson might be described as that formality of green growth most nearly HEDGES-L related to architecture. Indeed, there is so very fine a line between their artificially produced form and proportion and that of an architectural detail that practically they may be thought of as part of the general architectural scheme. It is the meeting-point of architecture and the green world-one of the instances where Nature, harnessed to civilization, does not lose in value. We might compare the hedge to the magic-though artificial-touch which transforms the great for- est tree, with all its freedom of growth and beauty of line, into a splendidly wrought column, so full of proportion and dignity that the sisters of the forest, from which it came, might almost envy it. The hedge is essentially artificial in its original treatment and also in its preser- vation, and left untouched for a short period, goes back with amazing alacrity to the freer growth which the Lord intended. Let us begin with our low flower-bed borders, our box and our barberry, and think of them as hedges. They are the little ones, and they creep up in size to those which we look over-which are of enormous use-and to those which are higher than ourselves ; and then we begin to think of the stately hedges of box and holly in Scot- land and England, and the wonderful yew and ilex hedges which we find in Italy- the backgrounds for the statues; the enclosures for the amphitheatres; the protecting walls behind which romance and intrigue have been born and cardinals have walked. -

Significance: The greenhouse at Bartrarrfs Garden was constructed by John Bartram (1699—1777), the well-known early Amencan botanist and explorer, in 1760—1761. Despite its later incorporation into a larger structure to the north, the greenhouse unit is essentially intact and remains among the earliest extant structures of this type in North America. Onginally heated by an exterior-fed Pennsylvania Fireplace and interior flues, the greenhouse's thick rubble stone walls also aided in heat retention. Like the large house to its south, the greenhouse bears the individual stamp of John Bartram's hand, most clearly indicated by pieces of carved frieze imbedded in the south wall as well as decorative joint work known as galleting.
