Monthly Weather Review Australia February 2021 The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Observation times and periods Each station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past 24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the following conventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made: Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day. Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day. -

Page | 2 RODONDO ISLAND – Oil Spill & Biodiversity Survey, January 2015 SUMMARY Rodondo Island was surveyed in January 2015 by staff from the Natural and Cultural Heritage Division of the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) to evaluate potential response and mitigation options should an oil spill occur in the region that had the potential to impact on the island’s natural values. Spatial information relevant to species that may be vulnerable in the event of an oil spill in the area has been added to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Oil Spill Response Atlas and all species records added to the DPIPWE Natural Values Atlas. -

Flinders Island Tourism and Business Inc. www.visitflindersisland.com.au /visitflindersisland @visitflindersisland A submission to the Rural & Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee The operation, regulation and funding of air route service delivery to rural, regional and remote communities with particular reference to: Background The Furneaux Islands consist of 52 islands with Cape Barren and Flinders Island being the largest. The local Government resident population at the 2016 census was 906 and rose 16 % between the last two censuses. The Flinders Island Tourism & Business Inc. (FITBI)represents 70 members across retail, tourism, fishing and agriculture. It plays a key role in developing the visitor economy through marketing to potential visitors as well as attracting residents to the island. In 2016, FITBI launched a four-year marketing program. The Flinders Island Airport at Whitemark is the gateway to the island. It has been owned by the Flinders Council since hand over by the Commonwealth Government in the early 1990’s. Being a remote a community the airport is a critical to the island from a social and economic point of view. It’s the key connection to Tasmania (Launceston) and Victoria. The local residents must use air transport be that for health or family reasons. The high cost of the air service impacts on the cost of living as well as discouraging visitors to visit the island. It is particularly hard for low income families. The only access via sea is with the barge, Matthew Flinders 11, operated by Furneaux Freight out of Bridport. This vessel has very basic facilities for passengers and takes 8hours one way. -

Pied Oystercatcher by Mick Brown. The Pied Oystercatcher is considered to have a very high exposure to sea level rise under both a national assessment and Tasmanian assessment. Its preferred habitat is mudflats, sandbanks and sandy ocean beaches, all vulnerable to inundation and erosion. Round-leaved Pigface (Disphyma australe) in flower in saltmarsh at Lauderdale by Iona Mitchell. Three saltmarsh communities are associated with the coastal zone and are considered at risk from sea level rise. -

Press Release 14 July 2010 Sharp Airlines to provide Tasmanian Services Sharp Airlines will take over flight services of Airlines of Tasmania from the 1st September 2010, making Sharp Airlines one of the fastest growing regional airlines in Australia. Sharp Airlines began operations in Victoria in 1990 and in South Australia in April 2008. Offering services from Hamilton, Portland, Avalon, Essendon, Adelaide, Mildura and Port Augusta, as well several Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) contracts for the Mining and Resource Industry. Airlines of Tasmania will continue to operate the weekly Cape Barren Services in the interim and Par Avion Wilderness Tours. “Sharp Airlines will become one of the important providers of regional airlines services throughout South East Australia”, said Sharp Airlines Managing Director, Mr Malcolm Sharp. “We are very excited about this expansion, we currently carry 55,000 passengers per year to seven ports throughout Victoria and South Australia, and we looking forward to providing services for almost 20,000 passengers who travel with Airlines of Tasmania each year”, stated Mr Sharp. Mr Donald Wells, Managing Director of Airlines of Tasmania said “Our Company has provided the Flinders Island Community with a reliable airline service for a number of years; I am comfortable that the service will continue to the same standard with Sharp Airlines. Deal Island an Historical Overview
Introduction. In June 1840 the Port Officer of Hobart Captain W. Moriarty wrote to the Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, Sir John Franklin suggesting that lighthouses should be erected in Bass Strait. On February 3rd. 1841 Sir John Franklin wrote to Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales seeking his co-operation. Government House, Van Diemen’s Land. 3rd. February 1841 My Dear Sir George. ………………….This matter has occupied much of my attention since my arrival in the Colony, and recent ocurances in Bass Strait have given increased importance to the subject, within the four years of my residence here, two large barques have been entirely wrecked there, a third stranded a brig lost with all her crew, besides two or three colonial schooners, whose passengers and crew shared the same fate, not to mention the recent loss of the Clonmell steamer, the prevalence of strong winds, the uncertainty of either the set or force of the currents, the number of small rocks, islets and shoals, which though they appear on the chart, have but been imperfectly surveyed, combine to render Bass Strait under any circumstances an anxious passage for seamen to enter. The Legislative Council, Votes and Proceedings between 1841 – 42 had much correspondence on the viability of erecting lighthouses in Bass Strait including Deal Island. In 1846 construction of the lightstation began on Deal Island with the lighthouse completed in February 1848. The first keeper William Baudinet, his wife and seven children arriving on the island in March 1848. From 1816 to 1961 about 18 recorded shipwrecks have occurred in the vicinity of Deal Island, with the Bulli (1877) and the Karitane (1921) the most well known of these shipwrecks. -
