We were all brought together and separated by the Covid-19 pandemic, and its impact on the lives and operations of individuals, companies and communities. As human beings, we found more common ground in our battle to beat the life- threatening virus, and we noticed that we are citizens of the world and very local at the same time. As physical boundaries were closed, we learned to be together online, across boundaries. Simultaneously, what we had locally, grew even closer, even more familiar and important. What did we at Wulff learn from 2020? A positive attitude towards change, the abil- ity to learn new things, the skill to identify what needs to be preserved – the elements found in the DNA of Wulff have carried us on for 130 years, and they will also pave our way to future success. In 2020, Wulff implemented its strategy and purpose above all by making working days safe. In 2020, ensuring companies’ operations with hygiene and protective products was crucial. Our basic idea remained the same: we are working towards a better world, one workplace at a time. We are thinking about what the perfect work- ing day is like, and what you will need for it. As the world changes, and even amidst a crisis, we at Wulff are enabling work in an environment where companies, entrepreneurs and employees operate. The pandemic has also prompted us to look after the world and make a stronger impact on it. That is why we have updated our strategy to make it even more sustainable. With the decisions we take today, each of us can affect the world of tomorrow, as well as the world tens or hundreds of years from now.     The Nordic Economic, Social and Political Model The Nordic model is the 20th-century Scandinavian recipe for combining stable democracies, individual freedom, economic growth and comprehensive systems for social security. But what happens when Sweden and Finland – two countries topping global indexes for competitiveness, productivity, growth, quality of life, prosperity and equality – start doubting themselves and their future? Is the Nordic model at a crossroads? Historically, consensus, continuity, social cohesion and broad social trust have been hailed as key components for the success and for the self-images of Sweden and Finland. In the contemporary, however, political debates in both countries are increasingly focused on risks, threats and worry. Social disintegration, political polarization, geopolitical anxieties and threat of terrorism are often dominant themes. This book focuses on what appears to be a paradox: countries with low-income differences, high faith in social institutions and relatively high cultural homogeneity becoming fixated on the fear of polarization, disintegration and diminished social trust. Unpacking the presentist discourse of “worry” and a sense of interregnum at the face of geopolitical tensions, digitalization and globalization, as well as challenges to democracy, the chapters take steps back in time and explore the current conjecture through the eyes of historians and social scientists, addressing key aspects of and challenges to both the contemporary and the future Nordic model. In addition, the functioning and efficacy of the participatory democracy and current protocols of decision-making are debated. However, the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have also had a major impact on social services. The pandemic increased service needs among those who were already adult social work clients before the pandemic; it also created needs among new groups of clients, while the operating environment for service provision changed dramatically. In our study we examine social workers’ perceptions on 1) how well social services were able to respond to clients’ needs during the pandemic. and 2) examine practices in adult social work that were used and developed during the outbreak of the pandemic. For the analysis we use national survey data obtained from social workers in the Social Barometer survey collected in May 2020 (n=496) and in January 2021 (n=412). The findings show that according to social workers, during the first year of the pandemic social work in Finland succeeded in responding to clients’ rather clear and concrete problems such as difficulties in applying for social benefits and lack of housing while more complicated problems, such as unmanageable debts, loneliness and mental health problems were not adequately responded to. At the same time, social workers assessed that people suffering from these problems were the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
