Wheat production: challenges both for Breedwheat, an ambitious project to ensure and for the world a competitive and sustainable agricultural sector ✔ Worldwide, wheat is the most widely grown (1/6 of arable land) and traded (~ 130 Mt) crop. ✔ 9 years (2011-2019) ✔ Wheat is the staple food for more than 1/3 of the world population. ✔ 34 million  (total cost) ✔ France is the largest wheat producer and exporter in Europe and ranks 5th worldwide. ✔ A collaboration between 26 French partners: ✔ With more than 50% of its production exported, wheat production represents a major sector 14 public research laboratories, of the French economy (4.4 billion in 2010). 10 private companies and cooperatives, ✔ To deliver safe and high-quality food and feed in an economical, environmentally sensitive, 1 technical institute, and sustainable manner while maintaining yield across environments affected by climatic 1 competivity cluster. changes, a paradigm shift is needed in wheat breeding. ✔ International collaborations (CIMMYT, ICARDA, WISP project etc.)

BREEDWHEAT proposes to break through barriers that have thwarted the translation of knowledge and molecular resources into breeding programs as well as effi ciently use genetic resources that will increase the genetic diversity of the wheat gene pool.

WP1 - High throughput sequencing and genotyping, structural polymorphisms, target gene isolation

• Sequence chromosome 1B, resequence whole genomes for CNV detection • Develop and map genetically and physically 5500 SNP markers • Achieve 33 million SNP genotyping for work packages 2, 3 and 4 WP5 - Data integration and dissemination to end users WP2 - Genetics and ecophysiology of wheat adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses • Develop new tools to integrate • Model plant architecture and development new polymorphisms and automate • Phenotype 48,000 plots in 15 locations for: association studies - Increased yield • Create a Breeder’s oriented portal - Improved grain protein composition for rapid application - Resistance to fungal diseases (FHB, STB) - Tolerance to high temperature/drought

• Apply association genetics for yield, quality, and biotic/abiotic stress associated traits

WP3 – Characterization and exploitation of genetic variability to identify novel alleles for target traits and development of prebreeding material

• Genotype 5000 wheat accessions from the INRA genetic resources WP6 - Dissemination • Genotype & phenotype two panels of adapted lines for abiotic and biotic stress • Develop novel European elite germplasm with improved stress tolerance • Organize training wokshops • Establish tools to disseminate the New wheat outcomes of the project: WP4 - Development, comparison and socio-economic evaluation of innovative booklets, web site, newsletters etc. varieties breeding methods • Organize 2 international conferences

• Develop & compare new breeding methods in a farm-scale selection program • Defi ne & evaluate new ideotypes • Evaluate socio-economic impacts of new breeding practices Breedwheat partnership www.breedwheat.fr
