And while the downward curve of her mouth would seem perfectly normal had I just addressed, say, terrorism, my talk was about how we can better accept and support each other. Here she comes, I think, arms locked, question loaded. I’ve triggered something. She wants to take me down a notch, there is contempt in her eyes. Write of Way Write “That was cute,” she said. I just stared at her. And if my mind could have abandoned my feelings, it would have. I could feel a slow hiss seeping out of my pride, like when my bicycle tire rolls over a thorn. I’d just given a talk at the State Capitol for a group of visiting writers. Cute was not what I was going for. I thank God my skin has grown thick. “So, where do you see yourself going with all this?” she said. “All this?” I said. “Where do you see yourself in five years?” I have a limited tolerance for this generic question. I never know if it’s a need to instruct or to compete, but the two always seem joined in people like this. They can’t seem to fathom that life can be less conventional and more entrepreneurial than they know it to be.

Grants to State Library Administrative Agencies The Library Grants to States Program, supported by the Library Grants to States Awards (LSTA): Services and Technology Act (LSTA), is IMLS's largest program and FY 2011-2016 provides grants to every state using a population-based formula. State Library Administrative Agencies (SLAAs) provide IMLS with a five-year FY 2016 $3.26 M plan and use subawards and statewide projects to improve library services. FY 2015 $3.30 M In FY 2014, IMLS’s $3.28 million grant to the SLAA leveraged FY 2014 $3.28 M approximately $2.27 million in support from the state that year for library services through the SLAA.

The show, Field Guide (until 25 February 2018), which Burke co-organised with the museum’s director of programmes and chief curator, Sandra Guimarães, demonstrates some of the museum’s priorities, such as showing works by a mix of Canadian and international artists, acting as an “artist-centred” institution and being a champion for work by contemporary indigenous artists. Field Guide shows pieces from the collection (many of which come from the city’s former Mendel Art Gallery, closed in 2015), new acquisitions, site-specific commissions and loaned works by 80 artists and collectives, including John Baldessari, Kader Attia and Hito Steyerl.

    CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a five-year preservation plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW Imagining Our Future: Preserving Pennsylvania’s Collections, published in August 2009, includes an in-depth analysis of conditions and needs at Pennsylvania’s collecting institutions, a detailed preservation plan to improve collections care throughout the state, and a five-year implementation timetable (2010-2015). The analysis concludes that many of Pennsylvania’s most important historic holdings must be considered at risk. Millions of items comprise these collections, and the financial resources available to care for them are limited and shrinking. Pennsylvania is a state vibrant with world-class art museums, libraries, historic sites. Arts and culture play a substantial role in creating business, jobs, and bringing revenue into the state and stewardship of its artifacts is too important —to the state, to the people, to the history of country—to be ignored. This call to action is a rallying cry for all future generations of Pennsylvanians. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in close partnership with three leading preservation organizations, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations (PFMHO), and LYRASIS, the Conservation Center for Arts & Historic Artifacts organized and led the assessment and planning process. The project was capably guided by a Task Force with representatives from the Office of (PA) Commonwealth Libraries, the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council, the Pennsylvania Caucus of the Mid- Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, Pennsylvania State University, the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University.

    Brooklyn, New York, and Queens Public Library Systems’ Culture Pass Resumes Free, In-Person Passes Passes to select cultural institutions throughout the five boroughs available now to library cardholders October 27, 2020 – Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the New York Public Library (NYPL, serving Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island), and Queens Public Library (QPL) today announced that their joint initiative Culture Pass – a citywide library program providing free access to library cardholders to cultural institutions across the five boroughs – has resumed service at select participating institutions, with limited capacity. Created in 2018, Culture Pass has provided nearly 110,000 free passes to museums, gardens, historical societies, performance venues, and other cultural institutions. As institutions across New York City reopen to the public, the City’s tri-library system is providing library patrons select opportunities to visit New York City’s unparalleled arts and culture organizations which have reopened with updated safety protocols in place, free of charge. Through Culture Pass, participating cultural institutions provide day-passes for library cardholders to reserve online and then present the printed or digital pass to gain free admission to a specified organization. As of November 1, 25 participating organizations including the Alice Austen House Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Kingland Homestead, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and New York Botanical Garden are offering in-person passes. Additional museums will offer passes on a rolling basis, as they re-open and are able to begin taking passes again.
