Meeting prospective business partners Sourcing and match-making in full swing at government procurement session for ICT solutions and products

he Taiwan External Trade Development Council-led “Sourcing Taiwan for Government Procurement-ICT Solutions and Products” procurement meeting was a busy affair in which T many foreign buyers met with prospective business partners at COMPUTEX’s Nangang Exhibition Hall site. Italy’s multinational Custom S.p.A., a leader in the thermal printer and point-of-sales system SBS JSC President and CEO Kiril Jeliazkov markets, was looking for POS computers, power supply monitors, bar code readers and motherboards at the procurement session. They were introduced to businesses in Taiwan that provide customized solutions and are able to help them provide customized products to clients. “We’re getting in touch with vendors that can provide customized solutions that can help our business to start up … Sometimes we don’t have that huge volume to approach some businesses that can help us,” Custom Outsourced ODM Product Manager Carmelo Chillari said. Such a collaboration could propel Taiwan to the global stage. Custom Purchasing Manager for Import Division Marco Gentili said that Custom had a new project: to look for LCD touch and touch screen solutions. Specifically, they were looking for bigger LCDs for digital screens and advertising displays that could be combined with existing products. “We’re combining solutions for hardware and software,” Chillari said, adding that Taiwanese Custom S.p.A Purchasing Manager Marco Gentili, left, and Outsourced ODM Product businesses had valuable expertise in this field. Manager Carmelo Chillari, right. For Ace Computers, a longtime participant in U.S. government and military bids, coming to COMPUTEX — and the procurement session in particular — was helpful to their search for partners that abide by U.S. trade agreements. “I’ve already found suppliers that can provide office notebooks that are ready to go,” Ace Computers Vice President John Samborski, PE, said of his visit at COMPUTEX. He added that meeting another partner during the show, which does portable workstations, had fulfilled his search for a suitable product that would meet the needs of his government partner, the U.S. Air Force. Kiril Jeliazkov, the president and CEO of Bulgaria-based SBS JSC, said COMPUTEX and the procurement meetings were a great way to understand the big trends in the technology industry, discovering specific products and running into partners old and new. “I’ve had three meetings and found them really interesting,” he said. “The level of expertise Ace Computers Vice President John Samborski, PE. and knowledge of the local companies has improved,” Jeliazkov added, noting that prospective companies came in with enough knowledge and scope so as to not waste time. He said he was looking for servers, industrial PCs and SSD HDDs.

15 CONTEST

Modding meet nears its halfway point

e caught up with our six teams of modders at the COMPUTEX Modding Challenge — CyberMods after 10 of the 24 hours had W elapsed. In these 10 hours, the modders used 3D printing, intense manual labor and fine airbrushing. Most are over halfway done with their build. Let’s see where they’re at. Team Australia Alex Ciobanu and Ethan Cooper of Team Australia are working on a build inspired by Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” movie, capturing its eerie, suspenseful feel in which the extraterrestrial creature is slightly hidden. The pair’s build features a yellow-and-black barricade design along the edge of the frame with rusted component parts to give an industrial, worn-out look, while an alien tail will later be attached to the build. Team China Xing Kai and Chen Zhi from Team China are also crafting a movie-inspired build based on the “Alien” franchise, but their version is inspired by the latest installment: “Alien: Covenant.” Zhi noted that the protruding alien heads and tails from the build are an intended exaggeration that makes this a statement piece. Team China’s build features meticulous details, with glue and other materials used to replicate the bumpy texture of the aliens. Team Philippines Michael John Lanaza Lacerna and DJ Madrid are working on a sci-fi build with a rusty and dirty-looking exterior that seems to be Star Wars-inspired. The build incorporates two water-cooling transparent cylinders that give it a futuristic look. While most of Team Philippines’ build is a slick black, it does incorporate a neon orange design that makes it pop. Team Thailand Peerakij Rungthongkhamkul and Chaipoj Khaowasut are nearly done with their build inspired by the video game “Horizon.” The build is in the shape of a cyborg animal, and while it’s a modern-looking silver now, the Team Thailand duo will rust it up to make it look like it has been through a war. The team has incorporated into the build a robotic-looking stand that they prepared ahead of the competition. Like their rivals, the team spent quite a while — a month to be exact — preparing for the competition, and many brought along suitcases filled with paint and other gadgets that would facilitate their design process. Team United Kingdom Alexander Banks and Robert Deluce from the United Kingdom are making a “Terminator”-inspired build that will feature slick silver, blue and black. The devil really is in the details for this team as its members focus on airbrushing in blue and black highlights and lowlights to make their build stand out. Banks revealed that they are using water-based paint, not solvent-based paint, for aesthetic purposes. The team was about 60 to 70 percent done with their build, he added. Team United States Jim Weist and Calen Saddler have taken the much-beloved “Halo” video game and featured it prominently in their build. With a custom-made “Halo” logo that will be placed on top of their build, Team USA is working on individual parts of their build before putting it all together just in time for the grand finale. Saddler remarked that the team was right on schedule with their work, so we look forward to their final build featuring a gnarly mix of gray, black and blue.
