Au sein de ces lignées, certaines espèces sont susceptibles de porter des traits morpho- anatomiques ancestraux. Par conséquent, dans un contexte comparatif, l'étude de ces espèces peut fournir des informations cruciales pour comprendre les premières étapes évolutives des angiospermes. Un premier volet de cette thèse vise à étudier des caractéristiques structurelles et fonctionnelles des groupes représentatifs d’angiospermes basales. L'étude d' Amborella trichopoda , espèce sœur de toutes les angiospermes, nous a montré une covariation des traits fonctionnels (tige-feuille) et une plasticité morphologique en réponse à des variations de l'environnement lumineux. Cela suggère que ces réponses plastiques étaient déjà présentes chez l'ancêtre commun de toutes les plantes à fleurs. En parallèle, l’étude de l'évolution anatomique des Piperales, ordre le plus riche parmi les angiospermes basales, suggère que leur ancêtre commun aurait possédé un cambium actif. Ces résultats supportent que les premières angiospermes avaient une forme de vie ligneuse et que la structure sympodiale à été acquise dans les premières étapes évolutives des angiospermes. Les angiospermes basales comptent parmi les lignées d'angiospermes surreprésentées en Nouvelle- Calédonie. Cependant, les mécanismes à l’origine de cette dysharmonie demeurent inexplorés. Un deuxième volet de cette thèse analyse la répartition environnementale des angiospermes basales de l'archipel afin de connaitre leurs préférences en termes d’habitats, ainsi que leurs exigences environnementales. Cette distribution environnementale a également été analysée au regard de leur résistance à la sécheresse. Nous montrons que la plupart des espèces présentent une préférence marquée pour des habitats de forêt humide avec des faibles variations en température. La vulnérabilité hydraulique face à la sécheresse apparait comme un trait majeur qui confine la distribution de ces espèces dans des habitats humides. Ces conditions auraient persisté dans des zones refuges dans l'archipel lors de la dernière période glaciaire, permettant ainsi le maintien de certaines lignées d’angiospermes basales. Une stabilité climatique passée pourrait donc être à l'origine de la surreprésentation de certains groupes d'espèces forestières qui ont disparu dans les régions voisines. La distribution des angiospermes basales néo-calédoniennes, ainsi que leur sensibilité à la sécheresse, supportent l'hypothèse suggérant que les premières angiospermes habitaient des milieux humides et stables. Abstract One of the remarkable characteristics of the New Caledonian flora is the presence of numerous angiosperm lineages recognized as the earliest divergences of the flowering plants, due to their phylogenetic positions. Within these lineages, some species are likely to bear ancestral morpho-anatomical features. Therefore, under a comparative perspective, the study of these species can provide compelling information for understanding the early evolutionary stages of angiosperms. The first part of this thesis aims to study the structural and functional characteristics of representative groups of basal angiosperms. The study of Amborella trichopoda , sister species to the remaining flowering plants, shows a covariation of functional traits (stem-leaf) and a morphological plasticity in response to changes in the light environment. This suggests that these plastic responses were already present in the common ancestor of angiosperms. In parallel, the study of the anatomical evolution of Piperales, the most diversified basal angiosperm order, suggests that their common ancestor had an active cambium. These results support the hypothesis that early angiosperms had a woody habit and that sympodial growth may have been acquired early during angiosperms evolution. Basal angiosperms are among the over-represented angiosperm lineages of New Caledonia. However, the mechanisms underlying this disharmony remain unexplored. A second component of this thesis analyzes the environmental distribution of New Caledonian basal angiosperms to know their habitat preferences and their environmental requirements. Further, we assess the influence of their drought tolerance on their environmental distribution. We show that most species have a preference for rain forest habitats with small variations in temperature. Drought-induced hydraulic vulnerability stands as a major trait that restricts the distribution of these species to humid habitats. These stable conditions seem to have persisted in refugial areas in the archipelago during the last glacial maximum, allowing the persistence of basal angiosperm species. Therefore, a past climatic stability could explain the over-representation of some groups of forest species that may have disappeared in neighboring regions. The distribution of basal angiosperms in New Caledonia, as well as their drought sensitivity, support the hypothesis suggesting that early angiosperms lived in humid and stable environments. Ortiz-Catedral© ii ABSTRACT I studied the foraging ecology of the world’s only population of the critically endangered Tasman parakeet (Cyanoramphus cookii) on Norfolk Island, from July 2013 to March 2015. I characterised, for the first time in nearly 30 years of management, the diversity of foods consumed and seasonal trends in foraging heights and foraging group sizes. In addition to field observations, I also collated available information on the feeding biology of the genus Cyanoramphus, to understand the diversity of species and food types consumed by Tasman parakeets and their closest living relatives as a function of bill morphology. I discuss my findings in the context of the conservation of the Tasman parakeet, specifically the impending translocation of the species to Phillip Island. I demonstrate that Tasman parakeets have a broad and flexible diet that includes seeds, fruits, flowers, pollen, sori, sprout rhizomes and bark of 30 native and introduced plant species found within Norfolk Island National Park. Although the molecular bases associated to the apical–basal gynoecium pat‑ terning have been described in eudicots, comparative expression studies of the style and stigma regulatory genes have never been performed in early divergent angiosperms possessing a gynostemium. Results: In this study, we assess the expression of fve genes typically involved in gynoecium development in Aris- tolochia fmbriata. We found that all fve genes (AfmCRC , AfmSPT, AfmNGA, AfmHEC1 and AfmHEC3) are expressed in the ovary, the placenta, the ovules and the transmitting tract. In addition, only AfmHEC3, AfmNGA and AfmSPT are temporarily expressed during the initiation of the stigma, while none of the genes studied is maintained during the elaboration of the stigmatic surfaces in the gynostemium. Conclusions: Expression patterns suggest that CRC , HEC, NGA and SPT homologs establish ovary and style identity in Aristolochia fmbriata. Only NGA,HEC3 and SPT genes may play a role in the early diferentiation of the stigmatic lobes, but none of the genes studied seems to control late stigma diferentiation in the gynostemium. The data gathered so far raises the possibility that such transient expression early on provides sufcient signal for late stigma diferentia‑ tion or that unidentifed late identity genes are controlling stigma development in the gynostemium.

The lack of knowledge concerning Verhuellia is largely due to its restricted distribution, poorly known collection localities, limited availability in herbaria and absence in botanical gardens and lack of material suitable for molecular phylogenetic studies until recently. Because Verhuellia has some of the most reduced flowers in Piperales, the reconstruction of floral evolution which shows strong trends towards reduction in all lineages needs to be revised. † Methods Verhuellia is included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis of Piperales (trnT-trnL-trnF and trnK/matK), based on nearly 6000 aligned characters and more than 1400 potentially parsimony-informative sites which were partly generated for the present study. Character states for stamen and carpel number are mapped on the combined molecular tree to reconstruct the ancestral states.

Author for correspondence: Judith X. Becerra, [email protected] Abstract Bursera is one of the most diverse and abundant groups of trees and shrubs of the Mexican tropical dry forests. Its interaction with its specialist herbivores in the chrysomelid genus Blepharida, is one of the best-studied coevolutionary systems. Prior studies based on molecular phylogenies concluded that Bursera is a monophyletic genus. Recently, however, other molecular analyses have suggested that the genus might be paraphyletic, with the closely related Commiphora, nested within Bursera. If this is correct, then interpretations of coevolution results would have to be revised. Whether Bursera is or is not monophyletic also has implications for the age of Burseraceae, since previous dates were based on calibrations using Bursera fossils assuming that Bursera was paraphyletic. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of 76 species and varieties of Bursera, 51 species of Commiphora, and 13 outgroups using nuclear DNA data. We also reconstructed a phylogeny of the Burseraceae using 59 members of the family, 9 outgroups and nuclear and chloroplast sequence data. These analyses strongly confirm previous conclusions that this genus is monophyletic.

However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong.
