Arkansas. He received his early education in the one room. slate. and McGuffey's reader genre of schools prevalent in rural areas before and at the turn of the century.He worked as a farmhand for his father until he was 19. at which time he raised his own crop and was thus enabled to attend high school as a boarding student in Junction City, Arkansas. He was converted at the age of 17 at Cane Creek Baptist William OscarTaylor Church and was immediately put into service as the church clerk and was soon a Sunday School teacher. His plan was to become a teacher himself, however, these plans were to be changed and after several sessions of teaching in the one room schools he surrendered to a call to the ministry and preached his first sermon at Caledonia Baptist Church in Union County October 21. 1912. Hewent onto attend Normal School inConway (UCA). Ouachita Baptist College in 1912- 14. and the SouthwesternBaptist Theological Seminary from which he received his Th .M. degree in 1924. In 1912 he married Minnie Belle White. They had eight children. 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild. He served as a pastor in various parts of Arkansas and also for 25 years in several positions as an associational missionary. An enthusiastic Baptist believer, he attended his first SouthernBaptist Convention in 19 18 and was a regular attendee at that annual convention throughout his life until shortly before his death. He led a group of men on a bus camping trip to the Baptist Wor ld Alliance in Atlanta in 1939. He was the founder of three associational camps: Ravenden Springs (now Cedar Glade), Baptist Vista and Wolf Creek Camp. Though he retired from the active ministry at the age of 65, it could be more accurately stated that he transferred to other fields of endeavor.He worked for some time in the North Little Rock inner city mission and after two trips overseas in which he followed the steps of Paul's missions and journeyedthrough the world of Jesus, he returnedto the life of a supply minister and guest speaker. In his eighties he cared for his invalid wife and wrote his two volume autobiographies. "The Old Timers Did It This Way" and "Seventy Years in the Ministry" and several treatises of genealogy.His 1 OOth birthday was a day of statewide note in Arkansas and in his 1 OOth year Ouachita Baptist University, his alma mater, awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Divinity. In his 1 OOth year he was still widely sought after as a speaker and raconteur and was known for his quotation of poetry. In recent years he had recorded several inspirational. seasonal. and religious tapes. He was an active gardener, read volumi nously, carried on a large correspondence with his many friends and relatives, and continued to memorize new poetry. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Melbourne. Arkansas, where he lived next door to his daughter and her husband. He had been the oldest minister in the Southern Baptist Convention for many years and served as a messenger
