Pop. 5 FLP Courtney (apud Jul. 80.3) In his account of events leading up to the assassination of Julius Caesar (Jul. 80), Suetonius preserves a fascinating bit of contemporary verse.2 Though customarily in- cluded in collections of fragmentary Latin verse, the pasquinade is surely complete in it- self. Whether the text is quite sound is another question. I quote 80.3-4:3 subscripsere quidam Luci Bruti statuae: ‘utinam uiueres—’. item ipsius Caesaris: Brutus, quia reges eiecit, consul primus factus est: hic, quia consules eiecit, rex postremo factus est. conspiratum est in eum a sexaginta amplius, Gaio Cassio Marcoque et Decimo Bruto principibus conspirationis. Despite the hazards involved in emending the text of an author as utterly and irretrievably anonymous as this one,4 I suggest that postremo should be emended to postremus. Once abbreviated to postremu’, the smallest slip of the pen would have produced postremo. There would have been nothing to arouse the suspicion of the copyist, since the meaning of postremo is at least adequate. Caesar did more or less ‘become king in the end’, and might well have done so in name as well as in fact, if he had not been assassinated. There are two specific advantages to reading postremus. First, it produces better par- allelism. Miller Abstract / Résumé Posidippus’ epigrams for equestrian victors (the Hippika, AB 71–88) build on epi- nician convention by maintaining the central role of the herald’s proclamation— the angelia—in the representation of athletic achievement. In a few of these epigrams, however, Posidippus embeds the horse itself in postvictory rituals. For example, the horse brings the crown to the victor, replacing the figure of the herald who announced and crowned victors; or, in a narrative of the race’s aftermath, the horse, incredibly, chooses the victor. Posidippus’ horses, there- fore, act as causal agents for the glory of their owners, and his detailed descrip- tions transform the horse from flesh-and-blood equine to everlasting (literary) monument. But, while it would be easy to agree on three-fourths of the matter to be included in such a scope, perhaps hardly any two persons would be in exact accordance with regard to the rest; with many pieces which lie on the border line of excellence, the decision must be made on a balance of very slight considerations, and becomes in the end one rather of personal taste than of any fixed principle. The classification of the selected Epigrams ·and the se lected lines of Satire VI into categories of vice is arbi- . trary and personal. Subjective interpretation of vocabulary and content has dictated the limits and direction of the clas sification. Jones Chair of Supervisory Commitee: Professor Alain Gowing Department of Classics This study is about the construction of identity and self-promotion of status by means of elite education during the first and second centuries CE, a cultural and historical period termed by many as the Second Sophistic. Though the Second Sophistic has traditionally been treated as a Greek cultural movement, individual Romans also viewed engagement with a past, Greek or otherwise, as a way of displaying education and authority, and, thereby, of promoting status. Readings of the work of Quintilian, Tacitus and Pliny, first- and second-century Latin prose authors, reveal a remarkable engagement with the methodologies and motivations employed by their Greek contemporaries—Dio of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Philostratus, most particularly. The first two chapters of this study illustrate and explain the centrality of Greek in the Roman educational system. The final three chapters focus on Roman displays of that acquired Greek paideia in language, literature and oratory, respectively. As these chapters demonstrate, the social practices of paideia and their deployment were a multi-cultural phenomenon. Following up on their work, Benjamin Acosta-Hughes and Susan Stephens, in a recent panel at the APA, and in papers that are about to appear in Callimachea II. Atti della seconda giornata di studi su Callimaco (Rome: Herder), have argued not for occasional allusions, but for a much more extensive influence from the Phaedo and Phaedrus in the Aetia prologue (Acosta-Hughes) and the Protagoras, Ion, and Phaedrus in the Iambi (Stephens). These papers are part of a preliminary study to reformulate Callimachus' aesthetic theory. 1 The Cicala's Song: Plato in the Aetia* This paper prefigures a larger study of Callimachus and Plato, a study on which my Stanford colleague Susan Stephens and I have now embarked in our co-authored volume on Callimachus.1 Awareness of Platonic allusion in Callimachus is not new, although its significance has not really been appreciateda close reading of the two authors remains a real desideratum, and it is indeed this need that we hope our work will one day fulfill. The main focal points of the present paper are two passages of Callimachus, and two passages of Plato, that, read together, configure a remarkable intertextual dialogue on poetry, reading, and the inspired voice. -
The Social and Political Context for Obstruction in Roman Love
THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXT FOR OBSTRUCTION IN ROMAN LOVE ELEGY by AMY K. LEONARD (Under the Direction of Charles Platter) ABSTRACT This thesis will examine the presence of erotic obstruction in the poems of the first century B.C. writers of Roman love elegy: Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. While erotic poetry prior to this time period had long necessitated a sense of obstruction, the deliberate construction of a failed love-affair by the Roman elegists serves to define their particular use of obstruction as a unique discursive strategy. The observation has been made that the time period marking the emergence and disappearance of Roman elegy qualifies it as a discrete, time-bound genre. In light of these time considerations, the obstruction motif in elegy, as a means of articulating a continual sense of failure, is capable of giving involuntary voice to events taking place on the Roman socio-political front, specifically, as this thesis will argue, a perceived loss of autonomy under the changing political structures at the end of the Republic. Apuleius: His Public Speeches and His Novel In his novel, Apuleius does not address a mass audience, as he does in the Florida, the De deo Socratis, or the Apology. Novels, though they may sometimes have been read aloud to a small circle,2 belonged to the sphere of private reading;3 Schmitz for this reason explicitly excludes the novels from his study of Bildung und Macht in the Second Sophistic.4 In his novel, Apu- leius has the opportunity to enter—and to have his audience enter—into a more intricate intertextual and interdiscursive relationship with the cultural capital which he on the one hand possesses and applies, and which on the other hand he can expect to be within the grasp of his educated audience. Livy on Pows in the Early Days of the Republic
Livy on POWs in the Early Days of the Republic 2017 is thought to mark the 2000th anniversary of the death of the great Roman historian Titus Livy. His history of Rome (Ab Urbe Condita) was extremely widely read in his own times and remains so today as one of the principle sources both for Roman history and Roman opinions about what happened, even if we are aware that much of the era before 275 BC is a compilation of oral history, patriotic tradition, and legend. Livy has played a great contribution then and now in explaining how Romans thought history took place and he has helped shape modern notions of the Roman world, sometimes beyond his own expectation and even in a few places beyond his intention. Livy’s position on POWs in the Roman world is a perfect example of the latter. In no small part due to Livy, the Roman legionnaire was famous for refusing to surrender and choosing either to fight their way out (and often die trying) or fall on their own sword(s) when escape was impossible. Polybius indirectly mentions this ferocity as a reason that Roman armies defeated Greek armies, and Livy boldly asserts it as part of the Roman martial code. Livy 22.61 ff very clearly asserts that the Romans abandoned the POWs taken at Cannae, and this decision inadvertently created the Roman policy to spurn POWs until victory had been achieved (and the old tradition to diminish their social status was continued for those who were repatriated). The year 216 BC therefore forms the divider line – as a Mason-Dixon Line in time – since the Romans considered all POWs slaves of their captors. -

Wich case scudies from Frontinus, Juvenal, Martial, Pliny the Younger, Plutarch, Quintilian, Suetonius and Tacitus among others, the eigh teen chapters offer not just innovative readings ofliterary (and some 'less literary') texts, but a collaborative enquiry into the networks and culcure in which they are embedded. Her research focuses on ancient technical literature and the history of science, and the relationship between politics, society and literature in the early principate. She is preparing a monograph on ehe author and statesman Sextus Julius Frontinus, and has published a series of articles on Vitruvius, Frontinus and Tacitus.
