Driscoll Commissioner of Education Dear Teachers, I am delighted to share with you the 2006 revised edition of A Teacher’s Guide to Fellowships and Awards: Opportunities for Professional Growth and Renewal. The Guide, first published in 1991 and updated in 1995, was received enthusiastically by educators across the state of Massachusetts and nationally. In response to requests for more current information, we updated the Guide and present to you an even more comprehensive listing of professional opportunities that are available to pre- kindergarten through grade twelve teachers. The success of Education Reform depends on high quality professional development linked to improving student learning. Teachers need a supportive professional environment that nurtures new ideas, encourages innovation, and places a high priority on peer support. Teachers must also have the time to investigate new approaches, the resources to access the state-of-the-art-teaching practices, and the flexibility to regularly communicate and collaborate with fellow educators. I hope you will continue to find A Teacher’s Guide to Fellowships and Awards a valuable resource as you strive to meet the challenges of education reform. Review this publication at your leisure, and let us know if it has encouraged you to apply for grants and fellowships. We of course will be particularly pleased to hear of your success stories. Sincerely, David P. Driscoll Commissioner of Education 3 Acknowledgements We would like to thank all of the sponsoring organizations of the fellowships and awards listed in the Guide for providing program information, supporting the education profession, and recognizing and valuing the accomplishments, innovations, and capabilities of teachers. Various publications, professional journals, and newsletters list and disseminate professional development opportunities. The difficult task was to consolidate all of these opportunities, update and verify the information and identify contact information. We would like to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the Project Manager, Michele Cipoletta. Michele spent endless hours researching new opportunities for consideration for the Guide and trying to constantly update changing deadlines and contact information. Finally I want to thank my colleagues Barbara Berns and Karen O’Connor who in 1991 helped to create the first Guide with me. Barbara is currently the Project Director of the Curriculum Dissemination Center, K–12 Science at the Education Development Center, Inc. in Newton, Massachusetts. Karen O’Connor is the Director at the Center for University, School & Community Partnerships, UMASS Dartmouth. Barbara Berns and Karen O’Connor continue to support professional development opportunities for teachers. They remain true friends and colleagues. 4 Contents Introduction 11-12 Arts 13 Distinguished Teachers in the Arts Program 14 The Mary McMullan Fund for Art Education 15 The NAEA Research Fund 16 Research in Grants in Art Education Fund 17, 18 The Ruth Halvorsen Professional Development Fund 19 The SHIP Fund 20 The Teacher Incentive Program 21 Business/Industry 22 Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education 23 Educational Improvement 24 Above and Beyond Awards 25 Award for the Distinguished Clinician in Teacher Education 26, 27 Award for the Distinguished Dissertation in Teacher Education 28 Award for the Distinguished Program in Teacher Education 29 Award for Distinguished Research in Teacher Education 30 Award for the Distinguished Teacher Educator 31 Best Practice Awards 32 Braitmayer Summer / Fall Grant 33, 34 Closing the Achievement Gap 35 Foundation for Exceptional Children Minigrant Awards 36 Fund for Teachers 37 ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program 38 IRA John Chorlton Manning Public School Service Award 39 Kappa Delta Pi/ATE National Student Teacher/Intern of the Year 40 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education 41 The National Academy of Education Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship 42 National Association for Gifted Children Hollingworth Award 43 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School Program 44 State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant 45 Support for Teacher Initiatives 46 English/Language Arts 47 5 The Bechtel Prize 48 Children’s Literature Association Faculty Research Grants 49 Hannah Beiter Graduate Student Research Grants 50 National High School Journalism Teacher Awards Program 51 NCTE Award for Poetry for Children 52 NCTE Donald H.
