Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context. -

Orchid Observations in Croatia in 2016
1 Orchid observations in Croatia in 201 6 Frank Verhart, Maastricht , the Nether lands [email protected] I ntroduction and general remarks As in 2014/2015 I visited Croatia for observation of wild orchids. In 2016 I went to Croatia twice. From 14 april until 1 May I was on the Southern Dalmatian peninsula Pelješac and from 11 until 30 June I explored the area between the Plitvice National Park and the city of Karlovac in the counties Lika - Senj and Karlovac. As always I did observations o f wild orchids on locations often not registered in the Flora Croatica Database (FCD) , a project of the Department of Botany of the University of Zagreb . At Pelješac interesting observations I did include those of Cephalanthera damasonium and Orchis ustula ta , as both have not been reported before from the peninsula. I found Epipactis microphylla , Ophrys bombyliflora and Serapias ionica , all of which have been recorded very rarely from Pelješac in the past. The visit to the inland of Croatia in June also yie lded observations of Epipactis microphylla , however by far the most frequently seen orchid species was Orchis ustulata of which a great many locations were recorded, many of those new. In the next chapters I present the results of these visits. Distrib ution maps The distribution maps in this article were taken from the Flora Croatica Database (FCD, Nikolić 2016 ) . The units of distribution are based on MTB, a current standard for mapping flora in Croatia. MTB is an abbreviation of the German “ “Meßtischblätter” , which means topographic map and corresponds with 10 degrees longitude and 6 degrees latitude grid. -

February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4
February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4 His Excellency Franjo Tudjman President of the Republic of Croatia Radi ev Trg 2 41000 Zagreb Croatia Dear President Tudjman: The U.S. Helsinki Watch Committee is deeply concerned by reports of serious human rights abuses by forces responsible to the Croatian government and by individual extremists in Croatia. Our own investigations of these reports, conducted during a series of fact-finding missions to Croatia in the past year, indicate that many of these reports are well-founded. We call upon you to investigate the abuses enumerated in this letter and to punish those responsible for them. We call upon you to take immediate measures to ensure that such violations of human rights do not occur again. The abuses described in this letter include violations of the laws of war in the current conflict between Croatian and Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army, including the summary execution of civilians and disarmed combatants; the torture and mistreatment of detainees; arbitrary arrests and disappearances; destruction of civilian property and the killing of journalists covering the war. In addition to violations connected with the war, Helsinki Watch has also documented restrictions on freedom of expression and the press and interference with the independence of the judiciary. Finally, we are gravely concerned about the harassment, discrimination and rising violence against Serbs not engaged in the armed conflict in Croatia. Rules of War Violations in Croatia by Croatian Forces Violations of the rules of war are often committed by local police officers and members of the Croatian army1 in areas which are under heavy siege by Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army.
