Who begins to talk first? What should one talk to the avel about? When menachem avel בלבד... הלכה אין לו להקב"ה בעולמו אלא ד' אמות של should one come to be ? Why are the mirrors covered in an avel’s home? May an item be removed from the avel’s home? In this issue, we will discuss the halachos and customs of an avel’s home. Learning Hilchos Aveilus Many people are hesitant to learn Maseches Moed Kattan because it talks about inyanei aveilus, and they are concerned that this might create an ayin hara that would result in some harmful event R”l. Te Sefer Chassidim1 comments that before learning this masechta one should daven to Hashem that nothing bad will happen to him. He maintains that Maseches Moed Kattan is a meis mitzvah since some people don’t learn it for fear that something bad will happen, so if one wishes to learn it he is doing a great mitzvah. Te Knesses Hagedolah2 says that there is only a concern if one learns it with a group of people, but learning alone is permitted. Tis masechta is included in the Daf Yomi cycle so it would seem that one may learn it. If one did not learn these halachos then he would not know what to do.6 Te Mitzvah Tere is a big mitzvah7 to console someone who lost a relative.8 Te pasuk9 says that it is better to go to a beis avel than to go to a party. We see that Hashem consoled Yitzchak after Avraham Avinu was niftar.10 Hashem did so to Yaakov after he lost Yitzchak as well.11 Terefore, even a great person should go be menachem avel a person of lower stature.12 (An avel does not have to rise in respect for anyone of great stature13 because he is immersed in his pain.)14 4. SPONSORED BY: Nichum Aveilim | 5 (lashon rabim) is said even when being menachem one avel.23 Some say that the aveilim answer amen after the brachah.24 Some explain the nusach as follows: When one consoles an avel, he does not know if it will be efective. However, we know that Hashem always takes care of the good of the tzibbur, and any nechamah which includes the tzibbur will be accepted. Terefore, we add Yerushalayim to the nechamah, which is a consolation for the tzibbur.25 Although one can be yotzei the mitzvah with this one phrase, it is better to actually engage the mourner in conversation and ease his pain (see below).26 Nichum Aveilim or Bikur Cholim? Nichum aveilim is kindness for both the living and the one who was niftar.27 Terefore, the mitzvah of nichum aveilim has precedence over the mitzvah of bikur cholim.28 23. David Bleich SURVEY OF RECENT HALAKHIC LITERATURE TREES AND PLANTS: THE CASE OF THE PINEAPPLE n the United States the presence of pineapple is ubiquitous on fes- tive and not so festive occasions. Not so in pre-World War II European I communities. Immigrants to this country embraced the pineapple as an affordable treat rather than as an expensive luxury. But the pineapple was not embedded in their culinary culture and hence there was no ac- companying tradition for its halakhic characterization. Cultivated on rela- tively low-growing plants, it was simply presumed to be analogous to a vegetable. Long ago, Socrates declared, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”1 The halakhic counterpart would be “The unexamined foodstuff may not be consumed.” The Gemara, Berakhot 35a, declares that if a person is in doubt with regard to a rule governing blessings he dare not partake of the food in question until that doubt is resolved: “Let him fi rst go to a wise man to teach him blessings so that he not commit me’ilah,” i.e., illicit appropriation of property belonging to the Deity.2 The American Torah community has achieved a level of halakhic knowledge and sophistication such that unexamined premises are no lon- ger regarded as acceptable as a matter of course. That sophistication has brought with it a keen awareness that many heretofore unexamined hal- akhic issues require analytic refl ection. The status of food products in general is one such area and that of the pineapple is a prime example. Some simply refrained from eating pineapples because they became aware of the existence of an issue, albeit one that, more often than not, they could not articulate in a knowledgeable manner.

    Kosher Connections Dairy Bread During the me of the Beis HaMikdash, there was a unique korban offered on Shavuos which contained two loaves of bread and was known as the shtei halechem (two breads), and to commemorate this a custom developed to eat dairy and meat at the same meal (Rema OC 494:2). How does that custom remind us of the shtei halechem? The answer is that a loaf of bread which was used at a dairy meal should not be used at a meat meal (or vice versa) because of a concern that there might be some residue of dairy on the bread (see Rema YD 88:2). Therefore, by serving dairy and then meat at one meal, the parcipants will be required to have two sepa- rate loaves of bread, and those two loaves are a reminder of the two loaves of bread offered in the Beis HaMikdash. Our discussion will focus on the following related halacha which applies year round. Because bread is a staple food which is made of simple, pareve ingredients and was commonly eaten with every meal. Chazal were similarly concerned that if bread was made with animal fat or with milk people would mistakenly eat it with the “other” type; there- fore, they forbade one from making bread which is fleishig or milchig, and also said that such bread may not be eaten at all.1 A few years ago, the cRc was asked to cerfy a large commercial bakery and found that just about every product they made contained milk powder which meant that none of the products could be cerfied.

I was asked to expand a bit on how I know that R. Barukh Epstein’s story with Rayna Batya is contrived. In this story we see her great love of Torah study and her difficulty in accepting a woman’s role in Judaism. Certainly, she must have been a very special woman, and I assume that she was, for a woman, quite learned. When Mekor Barukh was published there were still plenty of people alive who had known her and it would have been impossible to entirely fabricate her personality. The same can be said about Epstein’s report of the Netziv reading newspapers on Shabbat. This is not the sort of thing that could be made up. Let’s not forget that the Netziv’s widow, son (R. Meir Bar-Ilan) and many other family members and close students were alive, and Epstein knew that they would not have permitted any improper portrayal. It is when recording private conversations that one must always be wary of what Epstein reports. A good deal has been written about the Rayna Batya story, and Dr. Don Seeman has referred to it as “the only record which has been preserved of a woman’s daily interactions with her male interlocutor over several months.”[15] When challenged about the historical accuracy of Epstein’s recollections, Seeman replied “that there is no evidence to indicate that R.

According to the stringent opinion, many fish are prohibited, such as wild salmon (see footnote).2 Indeed some kashrus organizations do not permit those fish in their establishments.3 It is noteworthy that the anisakis worm is not the only worm that affects fish. There are tens of thousands of worms in the sea4 which are eaten by different kinds of kosher fish, many of which are eaten by the kosher consumer.5 It is important to realize that the issue of worms in fish is not new.6 This article will present the halachos of worms in fish, and explain the opinions for permitting and forbidding fish which are infested with the anisakis worm.
