O my Father! thou that dwelleth In the upper courts of light; Open thou the way before her— Guide, O guide her feet aright.1 Several major studies have been published examining Joseph Smith’s polygamous wives.2 My research supports that he was sealed to thirty-five plural spouses.3 This article examines briefly their later reactions to their plural involvement with the Prophet and addresses the following questions: What percentage kept the faith he taught? How many later left the Church and the Latter-day Saints? During the passing years, did any look back and consider his Nauvoo behavior improper or inappropriate? BRI A N C. He is the co-author of The Priesthood of Modern Polygamy, an LDS Perspective (1992); and author of Modern Polygamy (2008), and Mormon Fundamentalism: The Generations after the Manifesto (2006), which received the “Best Book Award” from the John Whitmer Historical As- sociation in 2007. His three volume Joseph Smith’s Polygamy: History and Theology will be published in early 2013. -

Book Reviews Quincy D. Newell, Your Sister in the Gospel: The Life of Jane Manning James, a Nineteenth-Century Black Mormon. (New York: Oxford University Press, 2019): Pp. xi, 203. ISBN 978-0199338665. Reviewed by Jennie Mathewson Your Sister in the Gospel is the first scholarly biography of Jane Manning James, a nineteenth-century African-American Mormon woman who lived through the re- ligion’s often mythologized founding years. As author and religious studies scholar Quincy Newell convincingly demonstrates, the story of Jane Manning James’ life— Jane, as Newell calls her because of the numerous surnames she held over her life— provides an alternative history of Mormonism: it both illustrates the attraction that Mormonism held for early black converts and complicates the LDS church’s narra- tive of an egalitarian racial structure within early Mormonism. Newell notes that Jane has recently become a symbol of the LDS church’s internal diversity and racial equality, but, during her lifetime, Jane was refused the full temple rites because of her race. Your Sister in the Gospel seeks to reconcile the idea that Jane was drawn to con- vert to Mormonism notwithstanding the fact that she was treated as a second-class member of the religion who would never fully ascend to the highest levels of glory in the Mormon afterlife. Although her mother was formerly enslaved, Jane Manning James was born free in Connecticut during the height of the Second Great Awakening. Jane joined the Congregationalist church as a young woman but heard a Mormon missionary, Charles Wesley Wandell, speak in her area in 1842. -

Pratt Much has been written about the Mormon pioneer company that went to the Great Basin in 1847. Little has been written about the large immi- gration group that followed, organized principally by Parley P. Pratt. Returning from England in April 1847, Apostle Pratt, together with John Taylor and Orson Hyde, successfully closed the Joint Stock Company, an ill-fated English trading company started by Reuben Hedlock, Thomas Ward, and Wilford Woodruff.1 Arriving in Winter Quarters just when Brigham Young and the pioneers were leaving for the West, Parley, and to a lesser extent John Taylor, reorganized and enlarged the companies for emigration west, negotiated with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the U.S. government Indian agents to protect the Mormons’ cattle from Indian attack, and tried to make Winter Quarters more economically efficient. They also dealt with difficult problems concerning plural marriage and wrestled with the question of leadership and authority in the absence of Brigham Young. The Indian Problem When Parley arrived at Winter Quarters on 8 April 1847, he found the Mormons in conflict with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the Indian agents. The Mormons had received permission from the government to stay on Potawatomi lands on the east side of the Missouri River but had failed to gain government permission to stay on Omaha lands on the west side.2 The Mormons had entered into agreements with the Indians them- selves to haul corn to the Indians and to provide protection in exchange for the use of their land. -

Episode 37: Tough Questions about Mormon Polygamy with Brian and Laura Hales Special Guest Podcaster Daniel Peterson (Released May 24, 2017) Daniel Peterson: I’m Daniel Peterson of the Interpreter Foundation. I’m sitting down with Brian Hales and Laura Hales to talk about polygamy. What could be more fun than that? I just want to say a word to introduce this. This is a podcast that we are producing jointly. The Interpreter Foundation, which I represent, and Brian and Laura represent LDS Perspectives Podcast. Brian is an anesthesiologist who, he tells me, and I love this line, “Charges people to put them to sleep.” I thought, “Sometimes, that’s really the business I’m in as well as a professor at BYU.” He has become over the past I don’t know how many years certainly one of the premier authorities on the origins, and to some extent, the development of plural marriage in the LDS Church in Mormonism. Laura Hales is the editor of A Reason for Faith, which is an anthology of articles on various issues that come up, or that cause problems for people, or pose challenges to people. So, we’re going to talk about plural marriage. I guess I’m just going to start off by saying that the establishment of polygamy in the church is a topic that a lot of members, and a lot of outsiders find difficult to understand. Or maybe even worse, I think they find it too easy to understand. Certainly critics do. They know immediately what it’s about, or they think they do. -

Another Look at Joseph Smith's First Vision
SECTION TITLE Another Look at Joseph Smith’s First Vision Stan Larson The First Vision, that seminal event which has inspired and intrigued all of us for nearly two centuries, came into sharp focus again in 2012 when another volume of the prestigious Joseph Smith Papers was published. Highlighting the volume is the earliest known description of what transpired during the “boy’s frst uttered prayer”1 near his home in Palmyra in 1820. The narrative was written by Joseph Smith with his own pen in a ledger book in 1832. It is printed in the Papers volume under the title “History, Circa Summer 1832” and is especially interesting because the account was suppressed for about three decades. In the following transcription of the 1832 account, Joseph Smith’s words, spelling, and punctuation are retained and the entire block quote of the 1832 account is printed in bold (fol- lowing the lead of the Joseph Smith Papers printing): At about the the age of twelve years my mind become seriously imprest with regard to the all importent con- cerns of for the wellfare of my immortal Soul which led me to searching the scriptures believeing as I was taught, that they contained the word of God thus apply- ing myself to them and my intimate acquaintance with those of differant denominations led me to marvel excedingly for I discovered that <they did not adorn> instead of adorning their profession by a holy walk and Godly conversation agreeable to what I found contained in that sacred depository this was a grief to my Soul thus from the age of twelve years to ffteen I pondered many things in my heart concerning the sittuation of the world 37 38 DIALOGUE: A JOURNAL OF MORMON THOUGHT, 47, no.
