Hales Several authors have written that during the Nauvoo period Emma Smith may have had a violent altercation with Eliza R. Snow, one of Joseph’s plural wives.1 Different narratives of varying credibility are sometimes amalgam- ated and inflated to create a flowing storyline of questionable accuracy. For example, Samuel W. Taylor penned this dramatic account in Nightfall at Nau- voo: Eliza got out of bed, feeling queasy. It was early, the house quiet. Perhaps she’d be sick this morning again. Better go out back to the privy, in case. She stepped from her room just as Joseph’s door opened. He paused a moment looking at her with affection—big, handsome, vital, her husband for time and eternity!—then they came together. She whispered, had he decided what to do? He nodded. They could meet at Sarah Cleveland’s this afternoon to talk it over. Two-thirty. A wild cry, then Emma was upon them with a broom-stick. Joseph staggered back. Emma flailed at Eliza with the heavy stick, calling her names, screaming. Eliza, trying to shield her head with her arms, dashed for the stairs, stumbled, fell headlong, and went head over heels down the steep steps as everything went black. She awakened in bed. Emma was there, and Joseph, together with Dr. Bern- hisel. “Eliza,” Emma said, “I’m sorry. .” “I understand,” Eliza said. Her voice came as a weak whisper. -

O my Father! thou that dwelleth In the upper courts of light; Open thou the way before her— Guide, O guide her feet aright.1 Several major studies have been published examining Joseph Smith’s polygamous wives.2 My research supports that he was sealed to thirty-five plural spouses.3 This article examines briefly their later reactions to their plural involvement with the Prophet and addresses the following questions: What percentage kept the faith he taught? How many later left the Church and the Latter-day Saints? During the passing years, did any look back and consider his Nauvoo behavior improper or inappropriate? BRI A N C. Episode 37: Tough Questions about Mormon Polygamy with Brian and Laura Hales Special Guest Podcaster Daniel Peterson (Released May 24, 2017) Daniel Peterson: I’m Daniel Peterson of the Interpreter Foundation. I’m sitting down with Brian Hales and Laura Hales to talk about polygamy. What could be more fun than that? I just want to say a word to introduce this. This is a podcast that we are producing jointly. The Interpreter Foundation, which I represent, and Brian and Laura represent LDS Perspectives Podcast. Brian is an anesthesiologist who, he tells me, and I love this line, “Charges people to put them to sleep.” I thought, “Sometimes, that’s really the business I’m in as well as a professor at BYU.” He has become over the past I don’t know how many years certainly one of the premier authorities on the origins, and to some extent, the development of plural marriage in the LDS Church in Mormonism. Laura Hales is the editor of A Reason for Faith, which is an anthology of articles on various issues that come up, or that cause problems for people, or pose challenges to people. So, we’re going to talk about plural marriage. I guess I’m just going to start off by saying that the establishment of polygamy in the church is a topic that a lot of members, and a lot of outsiders find difficult to understand. Or maybe even worse, I think they find it too easy to understand. Certainly critics do. They know immediately what it’s about, or they think they do. -

Spencer Fluhman In the single month of May 1843, Joseph Smith married four brides un- der the age of twenty. The youngest, Helen Mar Kimball, was fourteen.1 Of Joseph Smith’s plural wives, in fact, at least nine or ten were what would now be called “teenaged” (the term was not widely used until the twentieth cen- tury) when they married the Prophet.2 Since evidence for physical intimacy between Joseph Smith and some of his wives is compelling, the question of sexual contact with the youngest wives ignites controversy in print and across the internet. Further complicating the picture of Joseph Smith’s relationship with his young wives is the fact that Helen Mar Whitney experienced consid- erable pressure to consent to the marriage from both the Prophet and her own father, LDS Apostle Heber C. Kimball; she understood that her salvation and that of her family’s depended on her acquiescence. Because the most perti- nent documents for the Whitney case were penned by Whitney herself, critics charge on the basis of the Saints’ own documentary record that Joseph Smith used his religious position to impose himself on innocent teens.3 While a clear picture of these earliest plural marriages eludes historians— Joseph Smith never offered any rationale for his plural marriages beyond D&C 132—it is possible to reconstruct some of what the Nauvoo Saints ex- perienced in those tumultuous years.4 Such a reconstruction will not reconcile every questioner of early LDS polygamy, but the Saints’ accounts help mod- ern Church members comprehend the emotional and spiritual passages that J. -

Foundations of the Restoration Lesson 20 Plural Marriage Saturday, May 12, 2018 The Past “I have made a ceaseless effort not to ridicule, not to bewail, not to scorn human actions, but to understand them.” – Baruch Spinoza “We build institutes to teach 1) the history of the church, 2) the doctrine of the church, and 3) the practices of the church.” – Gordon B. Hinckley We should not seek to receive revelation that is contrary to what the Lord has revealed through His prophets. The Lord has revealed through His prophet that the practice of plural marriage has ceased in the Church. Anyone who advocates the practice of plural marriage today is not a servant of the Lord. (Foundations of the Restoration Teacher lesson manual, p. 92) These are the problems faced by Joseph Smith in 1830-1831 Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant and the principle of plural marriage. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, evidence indicates that some of the principles involved in this revelation were known by the Prophet as early as 1831. (Section heading D&C 132) Why? Four key verses that give multiple reasons Why would God command this? D&C 132:63 “1) multiply and replenish the earth, 2) fulfil the promise, 3) for their exaltation, 4) that they may bear the souls of men, 5) that God may be glorified.” Abrahamic test – D&C 132:51 “I did it, saith the Lord, to prove you all, as I did Abraham.” For both men and women. -

She is recognized, by scholarly consent, to be one of Utah’s and Mormondom’s most eminent historians. Prince was born in Santa Monica, California in 1948, but his familial roots are embedded deeply in the red sand of Southern Utah, with five generations of his ancestors, beginning with George Prince in the 1860s, having pioneered and lived in St. George and New Harmony. Dr. Prince enrolled in Dixie Junior College in 1965 and graduated as valedictorian in 1967. After a two-year proselytizing mission for the LDS Church in Brazil, he enrolled in the UCLA School of Dentistry, graduat- ing as valedictorian in 1973. He remained at UCLA for two additional years of Gregory A.
