Ver. 10 258–263 2019 Zingiber officinale – Ingwer (Zingiberaceae), Heilpflanze des Jahres 2018 IRIS KABUS 1 Einleitung Der Verein zur Förderung der naturgemäßen Heilweise nach THEOPHRASTUS BOMBASTUS VON HOHENHEIM, genannt PARACELSUS (NHV THEOPHRASTUS) kürt seit 2003 die Heilpflanze des Jahres und hat für 2018 Ingwer (Zingiber officinale) aus der Familie der Ingwergewächse (Zingiberaceae) ausgewählt (Abb. 1 & 2). Ingwer erlebte im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder höchste Beachtung. Vor allem im Mittelalter fehlte die Pflanze auf keiner Tafel, da sie Linderung nach Völlerei und fettem Essen verschaffte und den Reichtum des Gastgebers unterstrich. Eine weitere schon lange bekannte Wirkung ist die Hilfe bei Übelkeit, insbeson- dere Reiseübelkeit und Seekrankheit. KAMM). 2 Name Der deutsche Name Ingwer, das lateinische Zingiber und der englische Ginger leiten sich von der altindischen Bezeichnung srngavera her, wobei das altindische srnga für Horn/Geweih steht und auf die hornförmige Gestalt des Rhizoms hinweist und veru aus dem Tamilischen für Wurzel stammt (MARZELL 1979). Nach GENAUST (1983) ist der erste Wortteil wahrscheinlich eine Abwandlung des Begriffs inchi aus der südindischen Sprache Malayalam und kann mit Wurzel übersetzt werden. Somit würde der Ingwer die wörtliche Bezeichnung „Wurzel-Wurzel“ tragen. -

However, this common name refers to three different botanical species with different pharmacological effects. To facilitate the genetic identification of these three species for their more precise application in Chinese medicine we here want to provide chloroplast sequences with specific identification sites that are easy to amplify. We therefore sequenced the complete chloroplast genomes of all three species and then screened those for suitable sequences describing the three species. The length of the three chloroplast genomes ranged from 161,053 bp to 161,541 bp, with a total of 131 encoded genes including 31 tRNA, eight rRNA and 92 protein-coding sequences. The simple repeat sequence analysis indicated the differences existed in these species, phylogenetic analyses showed the chloroplast genome can be used as an ultra-barcode to distinguish the three botanical species of rhubarb, the variation of the non-coding regions is higher than that of the protein coding regions, and the variations in single-copy region are higher than that in inverted repeat. -

It is important natural resources that provide many useful products for food, spices, medicines, dyes, perfume and aesthetics to man. Zingiber officinale, for example, has been used for many years as spices and in traditional forms of medicine to treat a variety of diseases. Recently, scientific study has sought to reveal the bioactive compounds of the rhizome. It has been found to be effective in the treatment of thrombosis, sea sickness, migraine and rheumatism. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAMILY ZINGIBERACEAE Perennial rhizomatous herbs. Leaves simple, distichous. Inflorescence terminal on the leafy shoot or on the lateral shoot. Flower delicate, ephemeral and highly modified. All parts of the plant aromatic. Fruit a capsule. HABITATS Species of the Zingiberaceae are the ground plants of the tropical forests. They mostly grow in damp and humid shady places. They are also found infrequently in secondary forest. Some species can fully expose to the sun, and grow on high elevation. DISTRIBUTION Zingiberaceae are distributed mostly in tropical and subtropical areas. The center of distribution is in SE Asia. ABSTRACT Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) inflorescence with its showy appearance can be used as a cut flower. However, the development of inflorescence has not been studied. The aim of this study is to determine the phenological stages of torch ginger inflorescence from the emergence of rhizome until full bloom stage using the extended BBCH scale. The growth stages of the inflorescence are categorised into peduncle elongation, inflorescence emergence, flowering and senescence. It takes about 60 days for the inflorescence to emerge from rhizome and develop to reach full-bloom stage with true flower opening. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate University Town, Musuan, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the leaves and rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Rosc., Bukidnon, PHILIPPINES. Curcuma longa L., and Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith. Methods: The plant samples were collected from Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines. DPPH radical scavenging activity relative to ascorbic acid. Results and Discussion: Leaves, in com general, had higher radical scavenging activity in water than in ethanol extracts. On the other hand, rhizomes had generally higher radical scavenging activity in ethanol than in water extracts except for E. elatior. Among the leaf extracts, E. elatior possessed the highest radical scavenging activity. In both water and ethanol, E. elatior displayed higher radical scavenging activity in its leaves that its rhizomes. CHARLESTON GONÇALVES et al. 127 TECHNICAL ARTICLE Zingiber zerumbet flower stem postharvest characterization(1) CHARLESTON GONÇALVES(2)*, CARLOS EDUARDO FERREIRA DE CASTRO(2), ANA CECILIA RIBEIRO DE CASTRO(3); VIVIAN LOGES(4) ABSTRACT About the Zingiber zerumbet little is known about its cut flower postharvest and market, despite its high ornamental potential. The inflorescences, which resemble a compact cone, emerge from the base of the plants and start with green color changing to red with the age. This study objective was to characterize floral stem of ornamental ginger in two cultivate conditions and to evaluate the longevity of those submitted to post-harvest treatments. Flower stems were harvest from clumps cultivated under full sun and partial shade area, and were submitted to the postharvest treatments: complete flower immersion in tap water (CFI) or only the base stem immersion (BSI). The flower stems harvested from clumps at partial shade presented higher fresh weight, length and diameter of the inflorescences compared to flower stems harvested from clumps at full sun area. The flower stem bracts cultivated in full sun area changed the color from green to red 10.69 and 11.94 days after BSI and CFI postharvest treatments, and the vase life were 22.94 and 28.19 days, respectively. Flower stem harvest in partial shade area change the color only after 18.94 and 18.43 days and the vase life durability was 27.56 and 31.81, respectively. The complete immersion of the flower stem increase the vase life durability in 5.25 and 4.25 days compared to flowers kept with the stem base immersed only, in flower stems harvested from clumps cultivated in full sun area and partial shade area, respectively. -
The Genus Etlingera (Zingiberaceae) in Peninsular Malaysia Including a New Species

KHAW 23 Jalan SS2181 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia Abstract Etlingera pieeae Khaw from the Temenggor Forest Reserve in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia, is described as a new species. Including this new species, there are 12 Etlingera species in Peninsular Malaysia for which a key and descriptions are provided. Introduction Etlingera species are recognized by the presence of an involucre of large, sterile bracts, elongate and tubular bracteoles (Fig. I), flowers with a distinct tube formed by the bases of the labellum and the filament above the attachment of the corolla lobes (Fig. 2), and the labellum inrolling as the flower withers (Burtt and Smith, 1986). The first comprehensive systematic account of Peninsular Malaysian species now included in Etlingera was given in the classic monograph of Holttum (1950). His detailed account included four Phaeomeria species and six Achasma species, now all considered as species of Etlingera (Table 1). Holttum (1950) credited Valeton for recognizing that Phaeomeria is closely related to Achasma. The two major characters that Holttum (1950) used to distinguish between these two genera were the peduncle (long and erect in Phaeomeria, short and usually subterranean in Achasma) and the labellum (short in Phaeomeria and elongate in Achasma). Subsequently, Burtt and Smith (1986) united the two genera Achasma and Nicolaia Horan., which replaced Phaeomeria, an invalid name (Burtt and Smith, 1986) with a third, Geanthus Valeton, to form a composite genus, Etlingera Giseke. (Geanthus is not found in Peninsular Malaysia). -

Antioxidant activities were analysed using Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), β-carotene bleaching and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assays. Disc diffusion assay was used to determine antibacterial activity against six bacteria strains. Alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids and steroids were detected in the herb extracts. P. hydropiper extract had the highest antioxidant activities in FRAP and ORAC assays in which 1676.67 mM TE/g EW and 11.20 mmol TE/g EW were obtained, respectively. However, M. koenigii extract showed 61.8% inhibition in β-carotene bleaching assay among samples but lower than BHA/BHT standard. M. koenigii extract showed the most effective antibacterial activity against three Gram-positive bacteria. Aromatic Malaysian herbs such as P. hydropiper and M. koenigii were found to exhibit high antioxidant and antibacterial activities.
