"Nearly all - Ashford would later estimate nine in ten rural Puerto Ricans - were suffering badly from an intestinal parasite. Like most parasites, hookworms are both fascinating and deeply gross. The larvae grow in shaded, moist, warm soil and seek human feet. They bore through the skin, usually the skin between the toes, and worm their way into the bloodstream, then to the lungs, and then, after a cough and a swallow, into the upper part of the large intestine. His autobiography was published in 1934 as "A Soldier in Science" [on Amazon, but only at antiquarian prices]. Ashton, John: British physician John Ashton [Wikipedia biography] is noteworthy in the present context (a) for being a respected University of Liverpool Medical School public health academic 1986-present, actively campaigning for such initiatives as sex education, needle exchange, and better diet, (b) for being regional director of public health 1990-2006, resigning on principle in protest against politicised NHS decentralisation, (c) for continuing to protest NHS reorganisations during the 2010s, not coincidentally becoming the target of a professionally [that is to say, using intelligence service assets - Ed.] resourced and executed smear campaign, (d) for remaining vocal during the COVID-19 Pandemic [see COVID Timeline 4th April 2020]. Ashworth, Jonathan Michael Graham: British neoliberal politician Jonathan Ashworth [Wikipedia biography] is noteworthy in the present context for being Shadow Health and Social Care Secretary at the time of the COVID-19 Pandemic. During his three and a half years in portfolio, we observe the occasional bland press statement [e.g., https://twitter.com/JonAshworth/status/1249809200420663299], but few substantive dents in the Conservative government's continual NHS budget cutting. This may be due in part to his diverting effort to serially undermining his own leader ... CAMEO - THE FOUR YEAR CRUCIFIXION: As has been amply documented elsewhere, the U.K.'s health and social care services were thrown into crisis by the 2020 pandemic [see Timeline 11th February 2020 and follow the onward pointers], as budget reductions imposed during the 2010-2020 Conservative administrations started to kill under-protected doctors, nurses, and care home staff. Opposition effort had been diverted, however, Ashford assenting, to a vexatious vote of no confidence in party leader Jeremy Corbyn [see Timeline 24th September 2016], and then again during the concerted MSM assault on Corbyn during the 2019 General Election campaign [ditto 10th July 2019 and follow the <Corruption of the BBC> sub-thread]. For Ashworth's particular contribution to the latter, check out his "right plonker" gaffe in the hours immediately before the polls [YouTube it here]. Ashworth is married to neoliberal activist Emilie Oldknow [see own entry], who featured large in the leaked Labour Party Treachery Report [see own entry]. ***** AMERICAN BIOLOGICAL WARFARE SCIENTIST ***** Baldwin, Ira Lawrence: American WW1 veteran (artillery) turned "agricultural bacteriologist" Ira L. Baldwin [Wikipedia biography] is noteworthy in the present context (a) for learning his craft at the University of Wisconsin 1927-1942, specialising in fermentation science ... LEST IT BE OVERLOOKED: Fermentation science should not be underestimated, for, when it works well, it can bring great riches. Not only are brewers of alcohol among the richest dynasties on the planet, but Chaim Weizmann made his fortune brew-assisting the manufacture of cordite in WW1. After the war, the search was well and truly on for new industrial scale ferments. The University of Wisconsin has mounted one of its CALS lectures on YouTube, and it shows how to brew the deadly botox (three million times more deadly than cyanide) just like home-brewed wine - check it out (mins. 4-5). The lecture also features Dr. Baldwin at mins. 7-9, which see. .... and becoming departmental head there in 1942, (b) for then being headhunted by George Merck's presidential advisory panel on CBW in late 1942, to become scientific director at the Chemical Warfare Service's new Camp[/Fort]1956- Detrick research station ... CAMEO - BALDWIN AT DETRICK: Merck's basic question was whether it would be practical to produce a biological warfare deterrent, that is to say, to take a laboratory procedure for a pathogen, say the polio virus, and brew the germs by the tonne. Baldwin assured him that it was all just a matter of scaling up the apparatus. Installed with the rank of Captain and a $6 million budget (the best part of $90 billion at today's values), he set about equipping labs and recruiting scientists. Amongst those who came was a former Wisconsin student of his, Frank Olson [see own entry]. He is believed to have used his bulk fermentation skills to design "the mass production of anthrax spores to fill bombs" (Guillemin, 2006 [full text online]), which would have taken place at the production outstation at the Vigo Ordnance Plant [see own entry]. One of his later students was a young Sidney Gottlieb, destined to be chief wizard in the CIA wing of the Detrick complex 1951-1972. ... and (c) for returning to Wisconsin after WW2, and lecturing on until at least 1969. Smith, who has a long history of bringing awareness to Lyme Disease, said he was inspired to pursue the matter after reading a book by Kris Newby entitled Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons published this year. The fact of the matter is that the US Government and Military have a long history of experimentation with bioweapons, some of which has caused fatal consequences. It is time for the truth to come out. What is Lyme Disease? Lyme Disease is named after the small US town of Lyme (Old Lyme), Connecticut. In 1950, a mysterious disease first broke out in Lyme which defied textbook descriptions and which was characterized by strange symptoms, making it very hard to diagnose. Lyme Disease has multiple symptoms including muscle aches, joint pain, fever, chills, impaired memory and facial paralysis. If bad cases, it can lead to arthritis, nervous system disorders, heart problems and death. The most common disease spread by ticks is Lyme Disease. The CDC estimates over 300,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year.

    Reflections on the Historiography of Molecular Biology HORACE FREELAND JUDSON SURELY the time has come to stop applying the word revolution to the rise of new scientific research programmes. Our century has seen many upheavals in scientific ideas--so many and so varied that the notion of scientific revolution has been stretched out of shape and can no longer be made to cover the processes of change characteristic of most sciences these past hundred years. By general consent, two great research pro- grammes arising in this century stand om from the others. The first, of course, was the one in physics that began at the turn of the century with quantum theory and relativity and ran through the working out, by about 1930, of quantum mechanics in its relativistic form. The trans- formation in physics appears to be thoroughly documented. Memoirs and biographies of the physicists have been written. Interviewswith survivors have been recorded and transcribed. The history has been told at every level of detail and difficulty. The second great programme is the one in biology that had its origins in the mid-1930s and that by 1970 had reached, if not a conclusion, a kind of cadence--a pause to regroup. This is the transformation that created molecular biology and latter-day biochemistry. The writing of its history has only recently started and is beset with problems. Accounting for the rise of molecular biology began with brief, partial, fugitive essays by participants. Biographies have been written of two, of the less understood figures in the science, who died even as the field was ripening, Oswald Avery and Rosalind Franklin; other scientists have wri:tten their memoirs.

From the Cold War to the War on Terror, successive American administrations have turned a blind eye on dubious research rightly characterized as having “a little of the Buchenwald touch.” While the phrase may have come from the files of the Atomic Energy Commission as Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Eileen Welsome revealed in her 1999 book, The Plutonium Files, an investigation into secret American medical experiments at the dawn of the nuclear age, it is as relevant today as the United States pours billions of dollars into work on some of the most dangerous pathogens known to exist in nature. That Cold War securocrats were more than a little concerned with a comparison to unethical Nazi experiments is hardly surprising. After all, with the defeat of the Axis powers came the triumphalist myth-making that America had fought a “good war” and had liberated humanity from the scourge of fascist barbarism. Never mind that many of America’s leading corporations, from General Motors to IBM and from Standard Oil to Chase National Bank, were sympathizers and active collaborators with the Third Reich prior to and even during World War II, as documented by investigative journalists Charles Higham in Trading With The Enemy, and Edwin Black in IBM and the Holocaust.

Memoirs offer insights into the character, motives, and influence of political leaders, yet many scholars question this genre's ability to produce accurate history, insightful political analysis, or literature of merit. However, to the extent that memoirs contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the past they deserve closer study. Memoirs mediate remembrance of the recent past by functioning primarily in the interval between contemporary political discourse and professional historiography, where their reception molds historical memory.

    History Marie Curie Marie Sk Odowska-Curie

    History Marie Curie Marie Skodowska-Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish physicist and chemist famous for her pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first person honored with two Nobel Prize—in physics and chemistry. She was the first female professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. Curie visited Poland for the last time in the spring of 1934. Only a few months later, on 4 July 1934, Curie died at the Sancellemoz Sanatorium in Passy, in Haute-Savoie, eastern France, from aplastic anemia contracted from her long-term exposure to radiation. The damaging effects of ionizing radiation were not then known, and much of her work had been carried out in a shed, without the safety measures that would later be developed. She had carried test tubes containing radioactive isotopes in her pocket and stored them in her desk drawer, remarking on the faint light that the substances gave off in the dark. Marie was also exposed to x-rays from unshielded equipment while serving as a radiologist in field hospitals during the war. Janet Parker Janet Parker (March 1938 – September 11, 1978) was the last person to die from smallpox. She was a medical photographer and worked in the Anatomy Department of the University of Birmingham Medical School. Parker died after being accidentally exposed to a strain of smallpox virus that was grown in a research laboratory, on the floor below the Anatomy Department. The event led to the suicide of Professor Henry Bedson, the then Head of the Microbiology Department.

He retained a connection with his country of birth through his involvement with émigré organisations such as the Free German League of Culture (FGLC) in London, for whom he designed a series of fundraising stamps for their exhibition "Allies Inside Germany" in 1942. We want to thank all that have given so far to see this vision come to pass. 115 people have donated to G2 Voice so far. We have raised $11,141.00 in almost three weeks! Thanks again to all that have helped. We are waiting on delivery of the equipment to get the studio setup.
