  • ABSTRACT GYLYUK, ALEXEY. Properties of Gallium Nitride-Microorganism Interfaces
ABSTRACT GYLYUK, ALEXEY. Properties of Gallium Nitride-Microorganism Interfaces. (Under the direction of Dr. Albena Ivanisevic). A wide portfolio of advanced programmable materials and structures has been developed for biological applications in the last two decades. In particular, due to their unique properties, semiconducting materials have been utilized in areas of biocomputing, implantable electronics, and healthcare. As a new concept of such programmable material design, biointerfaces based on inorganic semiconducting materials as substrates introduce unconventional paths for bioinformatics and biosensing. In particular, understanding how the properties of a substrate can alter microbial biofilm behavior enables researchers to better characterize and thus create programmable biointerfaces with necessary characteristics on-demand. During the preliminary research stage, the most promising semiconductor material types along with target microorganisms were identified and subsequently utilized for further studies. Gallium-based surfaces (particularly, GaN with different doping levels) were chosen as the most promising semiconducting materials to be used in inorganic substrate-microorganism biointerfaces. The work was based on the hypothesis that they can be tailored to induce controllable microorganism behavior under specific user defined external conditions. At this stage of the work Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the test organism in the first two experimental parts of the dissertation work. As a the typical in-hospital infection, P.aeruginosa possesses high survivability and enhanced abilities to form resilient biofilms on various surfaces. These factors allowed us to perform a set of studies that enable to create GaN-P.aeruginosa biointerfaces, characterize them and identify factors triggering the morphological and physiological reactions of formulated structures. The final stage of the dissertation project involved utilization of the yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae which expanded the class of microorganisms used in the dissertation work.

  • Our Flemish Roots
-being the Magazine/Journal of the Flemish Mennonite Historical Society Inc. Preservings $20.00 No. 22, June, 2003 “A people who have not the pride to record their own history will not long have the virtues to make their history worth recording; and no people who are indifferent to their past need hope to make their future great.” — Jan Gleysteen Our Flemish Roots - A Century of Struggle Notwithstanding the most severe perse- cution of the Reformation, the Mennonite Church survived in Flanders from 1530 until 1650. Three-quarters of the 1204 martyrs in the Spanish Netherlands were Menno- nites (almost half of them women) as op- posed to the Reformed (Calvinist) faith. As many as seventy percent of the martyrs in Ghent, Bruges, and Coutrai were Menno- nites. Two-thirds of the martyrs from the Lowlands documented in T. J. van Braght’s 1660 Martyrs’ Mirror were Flemish. “For the Flemish followers of Menno Simons it was `a century of struggle,’” writes histo- rian A.L.E. Verheyden. Where the brother- hood of the Northern Netherlands soon di- vided under the influence of the individual- ism of elders, “....the severe repression in the South saw the Mennonites rallying anx- iously around the church and expecting from it the greatest blessing,” Anabaptism in Flanders (Scottdale, Pa., 1961), page 9. During this time a steady stream of refu- gees left Flanders and Brabant fleeing to Holland and Friesland with many eventu- ally settling in the Vistula Delta where they were known as the “Clerken” (clear, pure het Gravensteen, Ghent. In the courtyard and dungeons of this prison-castle our Flemish Mennonite ances- or “Reine”).

  • Familiennamen in Flandern, Den Niederlanden Und Deutschland – Ein Diachroner Und Synchroner Vergleich
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Hochschulschriftenserver - Universität Frankfurt am Main ANN MARYNISSEN / DAMARIS NÜBLING Familiennamen in Flandern, den Niederlanden und Deutschland – ein diachroner und synchroner Vergleich Abstract This article compares the prototypical (i. e. the most frequent) surnames of three neighbouring regions: The Netherlands, Flanders, and Germany. It concentrates on the surname’s emergence, development, their lexical sources and their current distribution. The latter is documented by maps based on telephone or official registers. Only some of the regional differences can be explained by cultural or historical factors. An important result is that onomastic landscapes do not follow national or linguistic borders. 1. Diese umfasst i.
