Dear Film Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the 2015 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival! Delaware’s oldest and largest film festival is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year. I would like to congratulate the Rehoboth Beach Film Society on this accomplishment, and I am proud that the Department of State, Delaware Division of the Arts is once again supporting this exceptional mid-Atlantic film event.

This great combination of American and international documentaries, full length and short films joined with opportunities to converse with celebrities, and family friendly entertainment is what makes this event so special. This year, the festival faced additional challenges in continuing this much-loved event, as the Movies at Midway theatres were not available for their traditional uses. Having found and “created” venues at which the films may be screened, the Film Festival perseveres through another year.

Once again this year, a particularly worthy student film director will be the recipient of the Morris and Roslyn Fierberg Student Film Award, which will be announced along with the audience favorite winning films. Additionally, this year’s Country Spotlight will feature the filmmaking industry in Iceland.

Whether you are a Delaware native or a visitor with us, I know you will be entertained and enriched by this outstanding cultural event!

Change can be good if one takes the time to see the positive. This year’s Film Festival is using three locations to provide film screenings on nine days. The good is that you can spread your selection of films over a longer period of time instead of cramming four or five in one day and forgetting half of what you saw. The good is that you can schedule leisurely lunches or dinners and have more time to catch up with friends and discuss films. The good is that you will have time to enjoy the fun activities, delicious foods, and creative brews at the Social Hub, the reinvented tent at the new Crooked Hammock Brewery. Sue Early Another change is the availability of online tickets sales thanks to the generous support Executive Director of The Bresler Foundation. The process of developing this customized service included Rehoboth Beach Film Society a lot of planning, programming, and testing. As I’m writing this in August, I truly hope that purchasing tickets is a good experience for everyone. Perhaps the most exciting change is the opening of the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art House in early 2016! For the first time, the Film Society will have a professionally designed 108-seat theater to present an expanded scope of year-round programs.

One of the first new programs that we’ve started planning for the new venue is the Rehoboth Beach Jewish Film Festival being presented in partnership with the Jewish Seaside Community. Visit www.rehobothfilm.com for information about this event and to learn about all of RBFS programs.

I t has been said that the only thing constant is change, and this year we certainly have our share of change. Change also brings excitement and anticipation of new venues, a new Social Hub and the ability to expand our offerings around town. The one thing that remains constant is the fact that the Festival will be here to provide the same quality of film programming and the wonderful experience you have come to expect. If this is your first festival, we hope you are amazed at the selection of films. The variety of genres (comedy, drama, thriller) and countries represented (Iceland, Spain, Germany, UK, India) continue Joe Bilancio to provide a great assortment of films for your pleasure. About the Cover

The theme for the 18th anniversary of the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival was inspired by Steve Drum’s digital art submission titled “Movies in the Sky”.

About the Cover When asked what was the inspiration for his artwork, Steve replied, “I wanted to combine an activity that is commonly done on the beach with the festivities of the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. The creation of movie reels as kites combines the entertainment of movies with the classic fun of families flying kites on the beach. Both are feel-good activities that bring people together.”

Steve Drum is currently a student at Salisbury University majoring in Graphic Design. Steve Drum He is also working at the SU Graphic Design Tech where he assists with designing and printing posters. His second job is a Sales Associate at the retail store Hollister Company.

ICELANDIC FILM INDUSTRY: SMALL BUT MIGHTY

It may be one of Europe’s smallest and most remote countries (a population of around 320,000), but Iceland and its capital Reykjavik (120,00 and roughly 1/3 of the total population) offers a wealth of cultural, gastronomical, and visual experiences that can certainly entice even the most demanding of visitors. Iceland has superb museums, remarkable heritage sights, vibrant urban life and incredible open spaces. The country’s film industry plays a vital role in the culture of Iceland and exposes much of its scenic beauty, charming people, and special traits to the world.

While the film industry in Iceland may not be prolific with 8 – 10 feature films another 8 – 10 documentaries and a dozen or so shorts each year, the breadth of the offerings and the wide range of genres continue to be a favorite of festivals worldwide. While the Icelandic film industry began in the late 70’s, it was the early 1990s that saw exponential growth

Country Spotlight: Iceland along with international acclaim. A new wave of talent has seen a number of breakout directors gain prominence on the world stage. Fridrik Thór Fridriksson, Baltasar Kormákur and Dagur Kári are three such directors, who are making ripples amidst the frosty waters.

Fridrik Thór Fridriksson may be most notable for his film Children of Nature, the first and only film from Iceland to be named a finalist for the Best Foreign Film Award at the Academy Awards®. Baltasar Kormákur’s film 101 Reykjavik won more awards than any other film in Iceland’s history. He has caught the attention of big US studios and recently released his English language film Everest starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. Dagur Kári’s Noi The Albino was huge hit at festivals around the world and his new filmVirgin Mountain, after winning a major awards in Tribeca, is poised to get a US Distribution deal, a rarity for Icelandic films.

One of the reasons that Iceland films have grown and flourished is the Icelandic Film Centre (IFC), a government funding and promotional source. The IFC was established in 2003 when a new law took effect requiring the Icelandic government’s participation in matters of domestic filmmaking. The role of the IFC is to fund and promote Icelandic films, especially abroad. Additionally, and crucial to the development of new generations of filmmakers, the IFC is also enthusiastic about nurturing film culture in Iceland by supporting local film festivals, seminars, and workshops where foreign and local professionals collaborate in both film and television.

In terms of promoting Icelandic films abroad. IFC focuses mainly on establishing a physical presence at A-list film festivals, arranging Icelandic film weeks and retrospectives in collaboration with the film societies of many nations, maintaining good relations with foreign liaisons, and ensuring that Icelandic films (features, shorts and documentaries) are properly introduced and made visible at international venues around the world.

So while it might be small, the Icelandic film industry is worthy to be featured in our Festival’s Country Spotlight.
