And that is not only because it was not understood but because it was stigmatised by religion and mainstream heterosexual society. Even today, the term “sodomy” and “catamites” are used in many legal documents and discourses in the USA and these were derived from Biblical texts. The first stirrings of movement on a rational basis to describe same-sex relations started in Europe a little before the region plunged into what are called World War I and World War II. Both were really wars fought by European Nation States and drew in both resources and knowledge from the colonies. Thus Edward Carpenter in England, Magnus Hirschfield in Germany, Havelock Ellis is Austria, all tried their hand at “naming” this phenomenon which was ancient in that they find mention in all human societies across the globe obviously making it a cross=species sexual behaviour. LGBT Terminology & Cultural Information Orientation Related Terms Sexual Orientation - The internal experience that determines whether we are physically and emotionally attracted to men, to women, to both, or neither (asexual). Biphobia - Fear and intolerance of bisexual people. Bisexual/Bisexuality/Bi - A person who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction regardless of gender. Down-low - slang term that refers to men who have sex with men (MSM) but are either closeted or do not identify as gay. Most often associated with and has its origins in African American culture in the US Gay Man/Homosexual - A man who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction toward men. Heterosexism - Institutional policies and interpersonal actions that assume heterosexuality is normative and ignores other orientations. The belief that heterosexuality is superior to other orientations. Heterosexual/Heterosexuality/Straight - A person who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction to persons of a different gender. Homophobia - Fear and intolerance of homosexual people and/or of same sex attraction or behavior in the self or others. Lesbian/Homosexual - A woman who feels love, affection and sexual attraction toward women. Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) - or Males who have sex with Males (MSM) a clinical term that refers to men who engage in sexual activity with other men, whether they identify as gay, bisexual, or neither Omnisexual/pansexual: a person who feels love, affection and sexual attraction regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. Thus, pansexuality includes potential attraction to people (such as transgender individuals) who do not fit into the gender binary of male/female. Pomosexual: describe a person who avoids sexual orientation labels (not the same as asexual) Same gender loving (SGL) - coined for African American use by Cleo Manago in the early 1990s. -

Creating a Safe Environment (CASE) for LGBT Iowans through Public Health Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, MA, CHES Director of Education and Outreach, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Donna Red Wing, MA Executive Director, One Iowa Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face significant health challenges. Many healthcare workers, from receptionists to physicians, are not accepting of or trained to work with LGBT people. The lack of understanding or hostility faced by LGBT patients, contributes to a large disparity in health access. National data show that 29% of LGB adults and 48% of transgender adults delay or avoid medical care compared to 17% of heterosexual adults. LGBT people seeking healthcare encounter medical forms that don’t acknowledge their gender identity, concerns that their gender identity or sexual orientation will not be held in confidence, and no idea if the healthcare provider and staff will treat them with respect and dignity if they disclose their sexual orientation. This presentation will provide best practices in working LGBT Iowans and offer strategies to create a safe zone designation. A Royal Perspective on LGBT+ Inclusion in India SANDEEP: Hello everyone, thank you for joining this session, A Royal Perspective on LGBT+ Inclusion in India SANDEEP: My name is Sandeep Nair, and I am the Programme Associate at Community Business, and honoured to be the moderator for this session, with our guest speaker, the Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil. The theme of this Conference is Impacting Positive Change, Challenging Assumptions and Disrupting the Norm. We recognise that when it comes to addressing inequalities and promoting inclusion, sometimes a bolder approach is required. Which is why we are so honoured, thrilled and delighted to bring you this personal interview with Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil - the first Indian royal to come out as openly gay. As many of you will be aware, being gay is considered a sin and homosexual behaviour is still a crime in India. It took the Crown Prince 30 years of internal struggle before he declared himself as openly gay. His highly public ‘outing’ in 2006 made the headlines in India and around the world and led to public humiliation and initial rejection by his family. Since then, he has dedicated his life to gay rights activism and supporting the LGBT+ community, believing this to be his mission in life. The work of his charity, the Lakshya Trust, is dedicated to supporting sexual minorities in India – and in particular promoting awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDs. -

PRIDE FLAG GUIDE A Resource Developed by the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues Rainbow Pride Flag This flag has come to represent the whole of the LGBTQ+ community. However when it was first created it was only for gay men and lesbians and featured more stripes of different colors. As time went on and demand increased, the flag was altered to accommodate the production, leading to the current one. The flag now represents all those who are apart of the LGBTQ+ Community Bisexual Pride Flag This flag represents bisexual people. The creators explanation of the colors is that the pink represents sexual attraction to the same sex, the blue represents sexual attraction to the opposite sex and the resultant overlap color purple represents sexual attraction to both sexes, which is bisexual Lesbian Pride Flag This flag is different than others as there is no agreed upon design for the lesbian pride flag, Different flags have been designed for different subsets which has created issues. This flag was created in collaborative attempt with the lesbian community to create a flag that represents all lesbians, not just one single subset. The stripes next are pink, the traditional color for girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender.
