Klaus Crew performance, including both accommodation and utilization factors, is an integral part of every human spaceflight mission from commercial space tourism, to the demanding journey to Mars and beyond. Spacecraft were historically built by engineers and technologists trying to adapt the vehicle into cutting edge rocketry with the assumption that the astronauts could be trained and will adapt to the design. By and large, that is still the current state of the art. It is recognized, however, that poor human-machine design integration can lead to catastrophic and deadly mishaps. -

January 15, 2019 ASEN 5016 SPACE LIFE SCIENCES Spring 2019 Tues/Thurs 2:0-3:15 pm ECCS 1B28 Instructor: Dr. David Klaus telephone: (303) 492-3525 email: [email protected] This course is intended to familiarize engineering students with factors affecting living organisms (ranging from single cells to humans) in the reduced-gravity and increased radiation environment of space flight, including orbital, lunar and Martian surface conditions. Unique insight will be gained regarding engineering design requirements for spacecraft habitats, life support systems and spacesuits, as well as space biology payloads. Life support needs, as they relate to basic human survival requirements, are covered initially. Next, the lectures turn to more detailed descriptions of the physiological adaptations that occur to people in space, with pertinent background information presented for each topic. Corresponding biomedical countermeasures used to maintain crew health for long duration missions will also be discussed. Finally, the underlying biophysical mechanisms affected by gravity, along with experiment design criteria, will be addressed. Current events within NASA’s research and exploration mission programs and the emerging commercial human space flight sector are reflected throughout the lecture topics. To further elaborate on the lecture material discussed in class, a series of integrated homework tasks provides a practical introduction to the process of journal article publishing and research proposal writing, including the anonymous peer review process used for each. The assignment involves writing a short journal article on an approved topic of your choice, your participation as a peer reviewer for the editor, revising your draft per the review comments you receive back, and resubmitting a final manuscript with a corresponding summary of changes made. -

The launch problem for small payloads is nowhere as serious as it is for scientific and academic users, who cannot tap the purchasing power available to spacecraft funded by the military and large corporations. The options available for the researcher at a university who has an instrument or a spacecraft are limited, sometimes depressingly so. Dedicated vehicles are usually unaffordable, and secondary payload opportunities require meeting a host of requirements, from payload design to timing to integration, dependent on the needs of the primary payload. In this paper, the authors survey the options available and answer the question, “Where do I start?” Sources of potential rides, including NASA, military, commercial, and non-U.S. programs and organizations were surveyed. The results are presented here, along with recommendations for an improved process which, at low cost, could improve the “matchmaking” system and simplify the obstacle course faced by spacecraft and instrument developers today. That policy needs to be acted upon, and with sufficient funding, neither of which are guaranteed. “Policy follows money, but sometimes authorization bills matter, and certainty the recent NASA authorization bill matters quite a lot,” said Jim Muncy, president of PoliSpace, during a panel session about space policy at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight in Las Cruces, New Mexico, last month. Project planning has been very successful, and we will soon be breaking ground! The project is scheduled to begin in October and be completed in October 2021. The project will begin with an addition between the end of E Wing and D Wing. Next, a new therapy addition and private rooms (suites) on A Wing will be completed. Then, renovations will occur throughout D Wing and E Wing. As noted in my previous article, there are numerous project priorities for what we want to accomplish in the Care Center. -

Behrens Specialist in Energy Policy Resources, Science, and Industry Division The International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Summary The International Space Station (ISS) program began in 1993, with Russia joining the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Crews have occupied ISS on a 4-6 month rotating basis since November 2000. The U.S. Space Shuttle, which first flew in April 1981, has been the major vehicle taking crews and cargo back and forth to ISS, but the shuttle system has encountered difficulties since the Columbia disaster in 2003. Russian Soyuz spacecraft are also used to take crews to and from ISS, and Russian Progress spacecraft deliver cargo, but cannot return anything to Earth, since they are not designed to survive reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. A Soyuz is always attached to the station as a lifeboat in case of an emergency. President Bush, prompted in part by the Columbia tragedy, made a major space policy address on January 14, 2004, directing NASA to focus its activities on returning humans to the Moon and someday sending them to Mars. Included in this “Vision for Space Exploration” is a plan to retire the space shuttle in 2010. The President said the United States would fulfill its commitments to its space station partners, but the details of how to accomplish that without the shuttle were not announced. The shuttle Discovery was launched on July 4, 2006, and returned safely to Earth on July 17. -

The current working hypothesis is that microgravity causes pressure inside the brain to increase, which causes deformation of the optic globe and thus changes in vision. To answer this question, Dr. Benjamin Levine of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at UTSouthwestern Medical Center and his First Award Fellow, Dr. Justin Lawley, performed experiments onboard NASA’s C-9 aircraft (Weightless Wonder VI). (2011) suggests ‘Social media tools cultivate the internal discussions that improve quality, lower costs, and enable the creation of customer and partner communities that offer new opportunities for coordination, marketing, advertising, and customer support. The paper contends innovation should be added to this and suggested by Beckinsale (2017). It is the importance of the networks, their connections, their value, their availability and the awareness of them that can play a significant role in innovation amongst small firms and technological entrepreneurial firms. Hansen et al (2011: 4) contends that it is the information contained in networks that has significant business value by exposing participants in the business network who play critical and unique roles’ In the innovation literature internal and external networks have been viewed as critical to the innovation process (Boddy, 2014). Social media adds a complexity to networks not addressed in the innovation literature. Adding multiplicity to social networks and potentially creating multiple networks depending on decisions made including the use of social
