The team trophies were awarded to Greenfield (for elementary) and Parkland Immanuel Christian (for junior high and for senior high).     “From Sod House to Lefse House” Immigration, Ethnicity, and the Formation and Reformulation of the Norwegian-Canadian Identity in Western Canada. By Kristin Borgenheim A Thesis presented to the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages Faculty of Humanities In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the MA Degree in English. UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2011 ii Abstract This thesis investigates the formation and reformulation of a distinct Norwegian- Canadian identity in western Canada. It argues that Norwegian immigrants to Canada in the beginning of the twentieth century adapted to Canadian society through their Norwegian lenses and worldview, and created a distinct Norwegian-Canadian western identity through the establishment of various organizations. During the late 1930s and 1940s, mainly as a result of the Great Depression and World War II, Norwegian Canadians seem to have become more assimilated, but there were still some who worked to revive interest in the Norwegian culture. With the movement towards official Multiculturalism in Canada and the initiation of the Multiculturalism policy in 1971, Norwegian Canadians experienced an ethnic revival. The Norwegian-Canadian identity had been reformulated and was now largely expressed through symbols. Still, their Norwegian heritage held great importance, and Norwegian Canadians again celebrated their heritage both privately and publicly. iii Acknowledgements After countless hours of research, writing and editing, my thesis is done and the time has come to thank the many people who in different ways have helped me complete it.     Researching the Edmonton Story By Catherine C. Cole A report commissioned by the Edmonton Heritage Council February 2014 Researching the Edmonton Story Executive Summary The objectives of this study were: • To provide the Edmonton Heritage Council (EHC) with a framework of the Story of Edmonton from 1939 to the present and • To increase knowledge of Edmonton’s history, heritage and shared culture. This report is intended to be used to inform efforts by the Council to enhance the interpretation of Edmonton’s history with a focus on identifying the important stories to tell, that are not currently being told, and how to ensure they are incorporated into our understanding of the city. An underlying premise for this study is that it is important for all Edmontonians to have access to and understand our history and heritage and the shared cultural heritage of people who have adopted Edmonton as their home. Whether people grow up in Edmonton and learn about local history in school or have moved here as adults and adopted Edmonton as their home, there’s relatively little information available about local history, particularly recent history. Historical narratives are valuable in shaping the community and foster local identity but these narratives must be inclusive of both the positive and negative aspects our our history and be a history that resonates with immigrants, migrants and Edmonton’s relatively large urban Aboriginal population, not just with the dominant society. Although Alberta’s population has been predominantly urban since the middle of the last century – and Edmonton’s population has grown exponentially since the end of the war, historians studying Alberta history have continued to focus on the rural rather than the urban, on pre-WWII rather than more contemporary history.

    Getting ‘er Done: Cultural Planning and the Phantasmagoria of Public Art in Edmonton By Ariel MacDonald A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Human Geography Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Alberta Ⓒ Ariel MacDonald, 2021 Abstract This research provides the first comprehensive account of Edmonton’s public art collection. It asks: How is public art understood and practiced, what landscapes do these understandings and practices give rise to, and what is the relationship between such landscapes and broader processes of urban development? Edmonton’s first public artwork was commissioned or purchased in 1957, and the collection has since grown to include over 260 artworks. Central to the collection’s growth was the adoption of a percent for art policy in 1991, whereby one percent of qualifying capital expenditure budgets have gone towards the creation of public artworks. Data were collected through site visits to public artworks, qualitative interviews with key informants working in the administration of public art in Edmonton and an examination of three key planning documents. The central data set, gathered from site visits to the artworks in the collection, was analyzed in three segments: (1) an overview of the collection noting its spatial and temporal growth; (2) the application and discussion of an interpretive tag system; and (3) the description of 12 exemplary artworks in the collection. In order to explore the relationship between the landscape of public art in Edmonton and broader processes of urban development, the theoretical lens of phantasmagoria was utilized. Popularized in early 19th century Paris, the phantasmagoria was a spooky lantern show where images were projected onto walls or screens but their source was obscured.
