While boasting fans in several countries from across the globe, today, professional wrestling maintains a lasting presence in five territories - USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and Mexico. ‘Culturally embedded spectacle’ is the unique conceptual framework developed for this paper to explain the longevity of professional wrestling in these five locations and includes the following factors: a continuous history of professional wrestling, national television exposure during the Old School era highlighting larger-than-life characters playing the face, an extensive group of independent professional wrestling federations and commemorative cultural experiences for young and old fans. 2 Granted, there may be other aspects not included here.

A YEN FOR THE DOLLAR: Airlines and the Transformation of US-Japanese Tourism, 1947-1 977 Douglas Karsner Department of History Bloomsburg University This article examines the transformation of transpacific tourism between the United States and Japan from 1947 to 1977, focusing on the key role that Pan American World Airways, Northwest Orient Airlines, and Japan Airlines played in this development. In the late 1940s, travel was mostly by a small upper class leisure market cruising on ships. Linkages between the air carriers and other factors, including governmental policy, travel organizations, and changes in business and culture influenced the industry. By the 1970s, these elements had reshaped the nature and geography of tourism, into a mass airline tourist market characterized by package tours, special interest trips, and consumer values. Between 1947 and 1977, several factors helped transform the nature of transpacific tourism between the United States and Japan. Pan American Airways, Northwest Airlines, and Japan Airlines played crucial roles in this development. These airline companies employed various marketing strategies, worked with travel associations, tapped into expanding consumer values, and pressured governments. Simultaneously, decisions made by tourist organizations, consumers, and especially governments also shaped this process. The evolution of transpacific tourism occurred in three stages, growing slowly from 1947 to 1954, accelerating in the period to 1964, and finally developing into a mass leisure market by the 1970s.’ When the US State Department officially permitted Pan American Airways and Northwest Airlines to start offering regularly scheduled service to Japan in August 1947, few American tourists wanted to make the journey. This was largely because they would have had to obtain a passport from the State Department and a certificate from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

2014 was a unique year for pro-wrestling, one that will undoubtedly be viewed as historically significant in years to follow. Whether it is to be reflected upon positively or negatively is not only highly subjective, but also context-specific with major occurrences transpiring across the pro-wrestling world over the last 12 months, each with its own strong, and at times far reaching, consequences. The WWE launched its much awaited Network, New Japan continued to expand, CMLL booked lucha's biggest match in well over a decade, culminating in the country's first million dollar gate, TNA teetered more precariously on the brink of death than perhaps ever before, Daniel Bryan won the WWE's top prize, Dragon Gate and DDT saw continued success before their loyal niche audiences, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk departed the WWE with one ending up in the most unexpected of places, a developing and divergent style produced some of the best indie matches of the year, the European scene flourished, the Shield disbanded, Batista returned, Daniel Bryan relinquished his championship, and the Undertaker's streak came to an unexpected and dramatic end. These are but some of the happenings, which made 2014 the year that it was, and it is in this year-book that we look to not only recap all of these events and more, but also contemplate their relevance to the greater pro-wrestling landscape, both for 2015 and beyond. It should be stated that this year-book was inspired by the DKP Annuals that were released in 2011 and 2012, in fact, it was the absence of a 2013 annual that inspired us to produce a year-book for 2014.

IMPORTANT HEALTH WARNING: PHOTOSENSITIVE SEIZURES A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people with no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games. Symptoms can include light-headedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, momentary loss of awareness, and loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects. Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents, watch for or ask children about these symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely to experience these seizures. The risk may be reduced by being farther from the screen; using a smaller screen; playing in a well-lit room, and not playing when drowsy or fatigued. If you or any relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing. year ago, inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, we published the Ainaugural Cubed Circle Yearbook, attempting to encapsulate what was a pivotal year for professional wrestling in 2014. This year we hope to do the same, albeit for a year of a decidedly different sort. 2015 was dissimilar to 2014 in many respects. It didn't see moments as grandiose as the end of the Undertaker's Streak, Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania victory, or the Guerrero-Atlantis mask match. When evaluated from afar 2015 may even appear stagnant in comparison, as did many of the world's largest and most influential promotions during the year – WWE, NJPW, and CMLL in particular. But, upon closer inspection, the seemingly motionless landscape of 2015 wasn't only very much alive, but both morose and vibrant, disheartening and emboldening. The open wrestling fan of 2015 had more choice and freedom than perhaps ever before, with some ardent observers of the industry even abandoning Monday Night RAW for lack of faith in the lumbering weekly juggernaut. Some turned to Lucha Underground, a show that garnered considerable cult popularity. Others looked to alternative facets of the company such as NXT, which grew beyond what many considered its zenith at the end of 2014, harbouring one of the better years for American women's wrestling in decades. AAA showed promise and ambition on several fronts, but was subject to unfortunate, and at times tragic, circumstances. NJPW was as repetitive creatively as it had been under the Kidani administration, but produced one of the best nights of wrestling of the last several years in WrestleKingdom 9 – made more readily available to an American audience than ever before.

Japanese Language and Literature Journal of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese jll.pitt.edu | Vol. 53 | Number 2 | October 2019 | DOI 10.5195/jll.2019.80 ISSN 1536-7827 (print) 2326-4586 (online) The Birth and Death of a Professional Wrestling Alter-Ego: Takahara Hidekazu’s Gamushara and the Loss of a Transgressive Identity Fareed Ben-Youssef Takahara Hidekazu’s (1961–) documentary Gamushara (Live Recklessly, 2015) about the joshi puroresu, or Japanese women’s professional wrestling, star Yasukawa Act (1986–) and her working through of past seXual trauma in the wrestling ring features a very curious but crucial casting note.1 The film’s star, Yasukawa, gets three separate billings in the end credits. She is listed by her birth name Yasukawa Yuka (安川祐 ⾹), her stage name which is also Yasukawa Yuka but spelled with different characters ( 安川結花) and her wrestling alter-ego’s name Yasukawa Act (安川惡斗). The credits gesture to the amorphous identity that the film seeks to capture, sensing the fissures and continuities that exist between a mild-mannered woman and her more theatrical, vicious selves. The triple billing for a single individual frames professional wrestling as a potent site for identity formation and fluidity. In his essay on wrestling, Roland Barthes points to a sharp disjuncture between the star in the ring and the performer outside of it. He writes as follows: “wrestling holds the power of transmutation which is common to the Spectacle and to Religious Worship.”2 In the ring, one can and does transform the self. Other scholars on wrestling like Gregory Stone have found that “the major task of the established professional wrestler is identity work—building and husbanding an identity that can mobilize the appreciations of the audience and maintain them over time.”3 With the New articles in this journal are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 United States License.
