Amazon is getting more serious about its brick-and-mortar retail ambitions with its first-ever Amazon- branded grocery store. The store does source a number of its items, including some produce and meat and other fresh food, from Whole Foods suppliers. It also carries Whole Foods’ 365 brand for certain items. But Amazon’s store offers other products, like Kellogg’s breakfast cereal and Coke products, that you won’t find at Amazon’s higher-end, organic-focused subsidiary. Amazon says the store combines the product availability and low prices of a grocery chain like Publix or Walmart with the convenience and quick shopping times of its Go model, with a selection that includes both big mainstream brands and local, organic produce.

  • Walmart Inc. Takes on Amazon.Com
For the exclusive use of Q. Mays, 2020. 9-718-481 REV: JANUARY 21, 2020 DAVID COLLIS ANDY WU REMBRAND KONING HUAIYI CICI SUN Walmart Inc. Takes on Amazon.com At the start of 2018, Walmart faced critical decisions about its future as e-commerce continued to explode. Walmart just lost its long-held crown as the most valuable retailer in the world to online leader Amazon. With Amazon’s recent acquisition of Whole Foods for $13 billion, Amazon moved aggressively into the offline world to challenge Walmart in its biggest business, grocery. Walmart was not standing still, making moves like buying Jet.com for $3 billion in 2016. While Walmart’s U.S. e- commerce revenues grew to $11.5 billion in 2017, there was no debate in Bentonville, AR: Walmart remained far behind. The question for Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Walmart.com head Marc Lore was how to respond to its most aggressive competitor ever (Exhibits 1a and 1b).1 Amazon The Early Years (1994–2001) Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 to exploit the Internet, still a relatively nascent technology. He determined that selling books online was most promising, because the number of titles available was greater than even the largest brick-and-mortar store could stock. Bezos and his wife drove west to start “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore” in Seattle, WA. Amazon offered 1 million titles for sale on its opening day in July 1995. Next year, the company had over 2.5 million book titles for sale, with revenue doubling every quarter (Exhibit 2).

  • Amazon Acquisition of Whole Foods Market
Amazon acquisition of Whole Foods Market A watershed moment? Amazon acquisition of Whole Foods Market: A watershed moment? The surprise announcement on Friday that Amazon is to acquire the leading US food retailer Whole Foods Market could have significant implications for food retailing, food suppliers and the supply chain. Leatherhead Food Research assesses five areas that may have significance to Leatherhead members. 1. Disruption is real 2. Clicks to bricks – the dotcom bubble reverses? “A transformative transaction, not just for food retail, It seems an irony that the mother of all online retailers, but for retail in general,” is how Moody’s ratings’ Amazon, should have acquired a traditional bricks and agency has described the deal. • Amazon and Whole Foods: Grocery's Continued Evolution
www.inlandinstitutional.com Amazon and Whole Foods: Grocery’s Continued Evolution Amazon.com Inc.’s (“Amazon”) online retail strategy appears to be evolving with its recent announcement on June 16th to acquire Whole Foods Market, Inc. (Whole Foods). Though it is too early to know what the full impact will be on the super- market business, Amazon’s decision to enter the brick-and- mortar retail landscape may help energize the $800 billion grocery industry and in the long run make the business an even more central part of people’s shopping habits.1 One clear message from this action by Amazon is that the future of grocery retailing will be critically dependent on hav- ing physical stores in close proximity to the consumers’ resi- dence. Well located grocery stores will be key to the omni- channel future of retailing for groceries as well as many other categories of goods. Far from threatening the long term value of grocery anchored retail properties, by their actions Amazon has just told the market that they are key strategic assets. Whole Foods Strategic Footprint After struggling for a decade to find a successful prototype for entering the grocery business, Amazon has offered to pay $13.7 billion for Whole Foods. Many in grocery and real estate circles had predicted that the company would ultimately have to buy an established grocer if they were to have any chance to “get big fast.” Assuming the acquisition closes, Amazon will gain access to Whole Foods’ customers who spent approximately $16 billion in the last fiscal year at over 460 stores.

  • Amazon Fresh Opens Grocery Store in California
Amazon has opened its Fresh grocery store concept at the Irvine Market Place, the second in Southern California to open in recent weeks. Like the first Fresh store that opened in Woodland Hills, California, the Irvine location served as a dark store to fulfill online grocery orders before opening to be public, helping Amazon meet the surge in e-commerce demand fueled by the pandemic. The Fresh format combines a conventional supermarket experience, including low prices, with AI-driven technology and perks supporting Amazon Prime, like free same-day delivery and pickup for Prime members, a company spokesperson said in an email, Grocery Drive reports. The store sells typical grocery store offerings like produce, meat and seafood, along with prepared foods made fresh daily, like bread and made-to-order pizzas. It also features the 365 by Whole Foods Market organics brand alongside national and local brands and Amazon's exclusive brands including Fresh and Cursive. Amazon is expanding its physical grocery stores this year, introducing two new formats, Fresh and Go Grocery, and opening roughly a dozen new Whole Foods locations. Currently, the e-commerce giant is on a hiring spree for upcoming grocery stores in the metro areas of Chicago and Los Angeles. The company has confirmed four upcoming locations in the Chicago area and job listings show Amazon Fresh is plotting six stores in the Los Angeles area in addition to its Irvine and Woodland Hills locations. According to Grocery Drive, there are reportedly two additional L.A. area stores also in the works. (Photo by Paul Bersebach, Orange County Register/SCNG) FreshFruitPortal.com.

  • Amazon Part I
RESEARCHNovember REPORT23, 2020 Amazon PartNovember I: The Retail 23, 2020 Business Insert Picture in Master View Ticker AMZN Amazon.com, Inc. Market Cap (MM) $1,555,127 Amazon Part I: The Retail P/E 2021E 79.09x Business 52 Week Performance Since the QUIC Consumers team first purchased shares of 250 Amazon.com in November 2016, the company has grown dramatically, entered into new business lines, and seen its share price more than triple. In light of the COVID pandemic and how much Amazon has evolved in recent years, the Consumers team believed it 190 was a good time to re-evaluate Amazon’s growth prospects going forward and how the company should (roughly) be valued considering these growth prospects. Given the size and complexity of Amazon, our review of the business will be split into two parts 130 with Part I focusing on the retail business and Part II focusing on AWS and the company’s other bets. 70 As CEO Jeff Bezos famously wrote in his 1997 letter to shareholders, 01-Oct-19 01-Mar-20 01-Aug-20 “It’s All About the Long Term” when talking about Amazon.com. For this reason, the Consumers team chose to build a 10-year financial AMZN S&P 100 Index model wherein we projected revenue and EBIT for the company’s North America and International segments through 2030. While not an extremely detailed model, we believe that in the case of Amazon, Consumers it is better to be approximately right than precisely wrong. We then applied a 25x multiple to our 2030 EBIT projection to arrive at a value Bronwyn Ferris of ~$1.7T for Amazon’s retail business, which is more than the market capitalization of the entire company today.
