"WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC: POLKAS, PARODIES AND THE POWER OF SATIRE By Chuck Miller Originally published in Goldmine #514 Al Yankovic strapped on his accordion, ready to perform. All he had to do was impress some talent directors, and he would be on The Gong Show, on stage with Chuck Barris and the Unknown Comic and Jaye P. Morgan and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine. "I was in college," said Yankovic, "and a friend and I drove down to LA for the day, and auditioned for The Gong Show. And we did a song called 'Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung.' And the audience seemed to enjoy it, but we never got called back. So we didn't make the cut for The Gong Show." But while the Unknown Co mic and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine are currently brain stumpers in 1970's trivia contests, the accordionist who failed the Gong Show taping became the biggest selling parodist and comedic recording artist of the past 30 years. His earliest parodies were recorded with an accordion in a men's room, but today, he and his band have replicated tracks so well one would think they borrowed the original master tape, wiped off the original vocalist, and superimposed Yankovic into the mix. And with MTV, MuchMusic, Dr. Demento and Radio Disney playing his songs right out of the box, Yankovic has reached a pinnacle of success and longevity most artists can only imagine. Alfred Yankovic was born in Lynwood, California on October 23, 1959. Seven years later, his parents bought him an accordion for his birthday. -

Neil Armfield
Mr Neil Armfield The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Neil Armfield at the Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony held at 4.00pm on 21 April 2006. Neil Armfield, photo, courtesy UniNews. Citation Professor Masters, I have the honour to present Neil Armfield for admission to the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). While Neil Armfield is still only at the midpoint of his brilliant career, he has already made a distinctive contribution to the Arts and Humanities, especially through his work as a director of plays, operas and films, both within Australia and overseas. Neil was born in Sydney and is a graduate of this University, completing his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English in 1977. While at university he began directing plays for Sydney University Dramatic Society, with such success that he was invited to direct his first professional production for the Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979. This production of David Allen’s Upside Down at the Bottom of the World, a new play about D H Lawrence in Australia, was also a great success and the production was subsequently invited to the 1980 Edinburgh Festival. Neil Armfield became artistic co-director of the Nimrod Theatre Company from 1980-82, confirming his special affinity for new Australian plays with landmark productions of Stephen Sewell’s Traitors and Welcome the Bright World and Louis Nowra’s Inside the Island. In 1983 he was appointed associate director of the Lighthouse Company in Adelaide. He is, however, most strongly associated with the work of Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre, having been a member of Company B since its inception in 1984. -

It is a significant part of the economies of many countries and forms 8.7% of the broader entrepreneurial activity in Australia. This Public Forum brings together all those with an interest in social enterprise including social entrepreneurs, non-governmental agencies, policy makers, academics, students and funders. The key focus of the Forum will be to explore the potential and to chart a new direction towards developing social entrepreneurship in Far North Queensland. Free event but please register at events.jcu.edu.au/SocialEntreForum Keynote speaker Cheryl Kernot plus short presentations by social entrepreneurs, and group work on building a social entrepreneurship network in FNQ Cheryl Kernot is one of the National Trust's 100 National Living Treasures. She was a member of the Australian Senate representing Queensland for the Australian Democrats from 1990 to 1997, and was the fifth leader of the Australian Democrats from 1993 to 1997. Recently, she worked in the UK as the program director for the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurs at the Said Business School at Oxford University and later, as the director of learning at the School for Social Entrepreneurs in London. After six years in these roles in the UK, she moved back to Australia. Cheryl is currently the Social Business Fellow at the Centre for Social Impact. Her role at CSI involves providing thought leadership on social business, social enterprise and social procurement. She writes regularly on these topics, speaks at events throughout Australia and advises emerging talent and organizations. -
