Facts: Stockholm Archipelago The archipelago boats are as natural to Stockholm as the City Hall. Pack your picnic basket, enjoy a dinner on board one of the boats or stop at an inn on one of the islands. In the summer, many boats traffic the routes, but the archipelago offers magnificent nature experiences all year around. The archipelago started to take shape 800 million years ago when the land rose from the sea. Today there are more than 30 000 islands, islets and skerries covering an area of 3,500 square kilometers, on which less than half is land. There are 6 200 larger islands (more than 2 000 m2) and 24 500 smaller islands, islets and skerries. The total shoreline is estimated that approximately 10 000 km, which is a quarter of the country's entire shoreline . The archipelago stretches 150 km from Arholma in the north to Landsort to the south and 80 km from the Stockholm mainland in the west to the final outpost, Svenska Högarna, in the east. The Stockholm archipelago can be divided into three parts: The northern archipelago with Vaxholm as the hub, the middle archipelago with Strömkajen in Stockholm City as the hub and the southern islands with Stavsnäs as the hub. Many of the tours north and south starts from the main port at Strömkajen during the summer season. Waxholmsbolaget operates the public transportation network at sea in the Archipelago and between the inner ports of Stockholm. They provide daily year-round traffic on behalf of Stockholm Regional County Council (Stockholms Läns landsting) to hundreds of jetties. The service is operated using 20 own archipelago boats. In addition, Waxholmsbolaget cooperate with a number of private shipping companies who provide additional services during high season. In the inner ports four Djurgården ferries provide traffic between the collective traffic hub Slussen and the popular inner city islands of Skeppsholmen and Djurgården. 4 million passengers and 7,000 tons of goods per year travel with Waxholmsbolaget. The archipelago traffic provides a lifeline and keeps the area accessible for residents as well as visitors from all over the world. Waxholmbolaget take children from their archipelago communities to school, collect fresh eggs from local farmers, deliver groceries to archipelago stores and make sure that every islander receives their mail and morning paper. It is estimated that 10 000 people live permanently on the islands, mostly on the larger islands closest to the coast, such as Vaxholm (Vaxön), Ingarö, Värmdö, Blidö, Ljusterö and Väddö, all with connections by bridge or ferry to the mainland. The landscape shifts from the inner archipelago’s lush green tranqulity and old-growth forests, fields and pastures to the wilder, harsher, rockier skerries of the outer archipelago, battered by wind and sea. Nowadays the archipelago is a cherished summer getaway for Stockholmers and a popular tourist destination. There are an estimated 50 000 holiday homes and 100 000 private boats in the Stockholm Archipelago. Regular passenger ferries service several of the larger islands further out to sea, such as Sandhamn (Sandön), Ingmarsö, Möja, Runmarö, Nämdö, Ornö and Utö. The Swedish alphabet consists of three additional letters: Å Ä and Ö. Did you know that “ö” is the Swedish word for island and “å” the Swedish word for stream. POPULAR ISLANDS Fjäderholmarna. The purpose of the foundation is to keep the archipelago accessible for everyone, preserve the farmland, and maintain biological diversity and to develop tourism and recreation in the archipelago. The foundation is one of the major employers in the archipelago and leases out farmland to contractors within accommodation, restaurants and marina services. Skärgårdsstiftelsen was formed in 1959 at a time when the permanent population on the islands had reduced dramatically. Farms had been abandoned, and the open countryside became overgrown and neglected. At the same time, the archipelago became an important recreational area for Stockholmers. The process of privatizing parts of the archipelago for holiday homes commenced. www.skargardsstiftelsen.se RANGERS AND NATURE GUIDES 40 rangers, employed by Skärgårdsstiftelsen, live and work as nature caretakers in the archipelago.
