You have put your Citizen Science Leader training in the classroom and in the field to practice by Ir Hendri Sosiawan collecting many water samples along the Ciliwung Agroclimate and Hydrology Research Institute River. REPORT FIELD You all are the ambassadors who care about the environment, especially the river ecosystem. This ecosystem is particularly vulnerable to pollution. You are all environmental researchers. Your commitment, passion and concern for the quality of the river water is admirable, thank you! Amazon Riverboat Exploration—2012 1 HIGHLIGHTS The highest concentration of nitrate and phosphate in the Ciliwung River is found during the dry season (July-October) and when the agricultural practices for vegetable crops is very intensive. We have found that the fluctuations of nitrate and phosphate concentrations in Ciliwung river are not only influenced by agriculture practices, but also depend on rainwater discharge during the rainy season or dry season. In a tropical country like Indonesia the water river discharge is significantly different between the rainy and dry seasons. So the abundance of nitrate and phosphate in the water during the rainy season was diluted by increased rainwater discharging into the river, even though the agricultural practices along Ciliwung river were at their peak. We are implementing FreshWater Watch as a part of integrated water resources management for the Kali Pusur and Kapilaler irrigated area in Klaten Regency, Central Java. We are also planning a collaboration with Indonesian government on a project in the Ciliwung-Cisadane River Basin. We are sharing information and knowledge to a group of farmers located on the upstream of Ciliwung river. We taught them how to apply proper fertiliser dosages for their agricultural practices. Reducing fertiliser use can have positive impacts on the nutrient concentrations in the water, and also reduce the likelihood for eutrophication. - FIELD RE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We sincerely give our thanks to our beloved colleague, Dr. Elleonora Runtunuwu who devoted her time, energy, mind and totally dedicated her knowledge and effort to conducting and supporting this Amazon Riverboat Exploration—2012 programme. May her soul rest in peace. 2 GLOBAL OUTCOMES Dear FreshWater Watchers, Thanks to your great contributions, we have reached 13,000 water quality datasets collected from more than 2,000 waterbodies across the globe. As this research gathers momentum I strongly encourage you to continue your efforts and refresh your skills on the FreshWater Watch website if you need a reminder. Your data are opening up new insights on freshwater ecosystems. You are helping researchers, water agencies, and planners better identify healthy waterbodies to be conserved and the degree of degradation that requires mitigation. Thanks to your measurements, Earthwatch and our partners are identifying drivers Prof. Steven Loiselle, to degradation of these fundamental environments.
