Summary The attractive fruits of Hypericum x inodorum contain copious seeds which germinate easily, and this constitutes the primary risk of invasion in Illinois. There is no evidence of vegetative reproduction. This hybrid is not naturalized or invasive in a climate similar to Illinois and neither are its parent species, H. androsaemum and H. hircinum. Cold hardiness may be a limiting factor in Illinois. Information on dispersal and impacts are borrowed from the literature on H. androsaemum in Australia, where it and H. x inodorum are declared noxious weeds. Antibiotics are widely used in the treatment of the disease. However, this widespread use of antibiotics causes both antibiotic residues in milks and antibiotic resistance developed in bacteria. Today’s researches are focused on discovering and using new antibiotics against bacteria. Objective: The aim of this work was to discover the antibacterial effects of Hypericum perforatum L. extracts against mastitis pathogens, and its other biological activities. Material and Methods: Kirby-Bauer assay was applied to the extracts. The other antibacterial activity was MIC for plant extracts. The non-enzymatic antioxidant activity was found using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH). Results: The extract was showed maximum inhibition zone against two bacteria (Coagulase-negative Staphylococci- 33 and 37; CNS 33 and 37), and the zone was 17 mm. A bacterium (CNS – 22) showed the lowest sensitivity to 812.5 µg /mL concentration. In addition, the extract was tried against the stable DPPH for antioxidant activity. Hypericum also displays an ample variety of other biological actions, such as hypotensive, analgesic, anti-infective, anti-oxidant, and spasmolytic abilities. However, recent investigations highlighted that this species could be advantageous for the cure of other pathological situations, such as trigeminal neuralgia, as well as in the treatment of cancer. This review focuses on the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), its derivatives, and other Hypericum species in hematologic malignancies.

    Chemistry & Biodiversity, Volume17, Issue1, January 2020, e1900596 Variability of Hypericins and Hyperforin in Hypericum Species from the Sicilian Flora Silvia Lazzara, Alessandra Carrubba, Edoardo Napoli Abstract Within Sicilian flora, the genus Hypericum (Guttiferae) includes 10 native species, the most popular of which is H. perforatum. Hypericum’s most investigated active compounds belong to naphtodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin) and phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin), and the commercial value of the drug is graded according to its total hypericin content. Ethnobotanical sources attribute the therapeutic properties recognized for H. perforatum, also to other Hypericum species. However, their smaller distribution inside the territory suggests that an industrial use of such species, when collected from the wild, would result in an unacceptable depletion of their natural stands. This study investigated about the potential pharmacological properties of 48 accessions from six native species of Hypericum, including H. perforatum and five ‘minor’ species, also comparing, when possible, wild and cultivated sources. The variability in the content of active metabolites was remarkably high, and the differences within the species were often comparable to the differences among species. No difference was enlightened between wild and cultivated plants. A carefully planned cultivation of Hypericum seems the best option to achieve high and steady biomass yields, but there is a need for phytochemical studies, aimed to identify for multiplication the genotypes with the highest content of the active metabolites.
