Sundays: The Minimal Obligation A Practical Tip for Orthodox Living

This has been excerpted from a publication in England called The Shepherd, published by St. Edward Brotherhood in Woking, Surrey, England. The following is from Mother Pelagia of Lesna Convent.

A Simple thing to bear in mind (but a fundamental one for anyone who wants to live as an Or- thodox Christian: Sunday is the Lord’s Day. It, and the major feasts, are days on which we should go to church. Nowadays many people seem to be under the impression that going to church is an option on Sundays, and nothing more than that. Sometimes one hears excuses for not coming—”I had so much to do!” and the like, but there are no excuses from this base- line commitment. These are not excuses but admissions of sin. Church attendance on Sun- days is not simply one of several options. It is essential for our spiritual well-being. In fact, Sunday church attendance and attendance on the Twelve Great Feasts is so essential for us (not for God, not for the priest, not for the parish community, but for our own spiritual lives), that even if we are away from home, on holiday, or travelling, we should make inquiries, find a church, and try our best to attend a service on these days. Of course, occasions do occur when we are prevented from going to church; but then, rather than just dismissing it, we should make a special effort to read the Scriptures and services at home, still to keep holy the Lord’s day. This is particularly important for those who have the responsibility of bring- ing up children. Also, if through necessity you have missed a Sunday Liturgy, try to attend on some other day in that week. If we consistently neglect this, we shall find that the neglect be- comes habitual and will quickly spread into other areas of our spiritual life.

If you love your neighbor, then all of heaven will love you. If you are united in spirit with your fellow creatures, then you will be united with God and all the company of heaven; if you are merciful to your neighbor, then God and all the angels and saints will be merciful to you. If you pray for others than all of heaven will intercede for you. The Lord our God is holy; be holy yourself also. St. John of Kronstadt

Only Orthodox Christians who are prepared may approach the Holy Chalice... Please remember to have respect as we process forward to receive Holy Communion. This is a solemn time for humility, prayer and silence. Similarly, after receiving Holy Communion, proceed back to your place in church quietly and begin saying the “Prayers of Thanksgiving.” It is proper to remain standing in prayer while the rest of the faithful receive Holy Communion. We shouldn’t be sitting at this time, unless it is absolutely necessary. This is NOT the time for greetings and socialization. With great reverence, we quietly draw near to the Holy Chalice with our arms crossed over our chest. As you step up on the solea to receive, say your name, then open your mouth wide to receive the Holy Gifts. Please do NOT make the sign of the cross immediately after having received Holy Communion, as there is a great danger that you will hit the bottom of the Chalice and thus cause a spill. Having received Holy Communion, carefully step back away from the Chalice (being careful not to touch it) and then down from the solea to make the sign of the Cross and receive a piece of Antidoron (blessed bread). Regarding Holy Communion… Since we understand Holy Communion to manifest and to mean that we have a “common-union” with God and with one another, that we share the same Christian Faith; only those baptized and/or chrismated in the Orthodox Church, who profess the Faith in their beliefs and thus in the actions of their daily life, who prepare themselves by arriving at church on time, saying the pre-Communion prayers, fasting from last midnight, a recent confession; and who have not excommunicated themselves from the Church for any reason (ie., divorce, marriage outside the Church, sex outside of marriage, receiving Holy Communion, or any other Sacrament in a non-Orthodox Church, etc...): you may draw near to the Holy Chalice “in the fear of God and in faith and in love”.

We accept with pain and sorrow the reality of our separation at the Lord’s Table, while at the same time acknowledging His call to work and pray earnestly for that fullness of our unity in Him. The Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism, when making reference to the Eastern Churches, envisages greater freedom of worship and intercommunication with the Orthodox, while recognizing that careful, and probably long, consultations with Eastern Catholic and Orthodox theologians must precede such a step. The Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas meanwhile has taken the clear position that the Orthodox faithful MAY NOT receive Communion outside their churches. The reverse is likewise true. Non-Orthodox MAY NOT receive Communion in an Orthodox Church.

All are welcome to venerate the Holy Cross and with deep reverence to partake of the blessed bread at the dismissal.
