Volume : 130 Issue No. : 130 Month : May, 2011 Volume : 130 Issue No. : 130 Month : May, 2011 If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy... Our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. H. H. The Dalai Lama MESSAGE FROM ACHARYA DR. SHIVMUNI FOR ALL JAIN SHRAVAKS Compassion, Fraternity, live and let live and Non violence are some of the main principles of Jainism. These doctrines of Jainism were fully and wholly heartedly adopted by the great freedom fighter and father of nation Sh. Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. Walking on the strong foundation of these principles Mahatma Gandhi got India free from the cruel clutches of foreign rulers. But, after independence the ideology of India has been changed drastically. The principle of non violence made totally oblivious by greedy, selfish and self centered leaders of today. Accordingly to earn foreign currency the UP Govt. has decided to open 15 modern slaughter houses to slaughter 10000 cattle in each slaughter house per day. This decision is totally unbearable for the peace, loving, worshiper of non violence and the followers of Lord Mahavira who propounded the principles of Jain ethics. Against the decision of UP Govt. a movement was started led by Jain saint Sh Maitry Prabh Sagar Ji Maharaj. UP Govt. tried to crush this movement mercilessly. Being the Acharya of Vardhman Shwetambar Sthanakwasi Jain Sharman Sangh, I appreciate, recommend the steps taken by Sh. Maitry SagarJi Maharaj and appeal Shravaks and Shravikas of Shvetamber Sthanakwasi community to help and extent their co-operation physically, mentally and monetarily to boost the morale of the people those are trying day and might against the decision of Up Govt. I request the honorable CM of UP not to open these proposed slaughter houses in UP so that the lives of 1,50,000 cattle may be saved from the cruel butchery everyday. इसलए कया वरोध - TEMPLES PARASNATH HILLS FACE THREAT DUE TO MINING Giridih, Mining, legal or otherwise, is no longer just a geological problem at the Parasnath hills. Frequent tree-felling and soil erosion have given the issue a religious angle. Geologists and environmentalists warn that if no concrete steps are taken to stop misuse of the mountain within 50 years, there would be a significant threat to the 4,431 ft Parasnath hill. Parasnath hills hold special significance for Jains as most of the Jain Tirthankars including Parsva or Parsvanath, attained nirvana on the hill. Environmentalist U.C. Mehta said the life of the mountain is decreasing fast thanks to the way trees are being cut down frequently. One of the problems is the construction of the Grand Trunk Road, which passes beside the hill. The road has been under construction for four years, and stones and soil from the hill are being used for the construction. President of Jain Swetamber Society, Kamal Singh Rampuria says he will ask the government for a survey to get exact data of the hill’s height and also to take necessary steps to maintain the condition of the hill.

  • The Cult of Nākoḍā Bhairava - Deity Worship and Possession in Jainism
The Cult of Nākoḍā Bhairava - Deity Worship and Possession in Jainism - Knut Aukland Master‟s Degree Thesis in History of Religion (60sp) Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages The Faculty of Humanities Univerisity of Oslo Autumn 2010 i Abstract Based on ethnographic work in India this thesis deals with various aspects of worship and possession related to the cult of Nākoḍā Bhairava, an extremely popular and famous protective deity among Jains in India. In its present form the cult seems to have been created and propagated by Jain mendicants about 75 years ago. The idol of Nākoḍā Bhairava is situated in a Jain pilgrimage site in western Rajasthan to which both Jains and non-Jains come to worship. Although Nākoḍā Bhairava is the centre of much attention and the main reason for the site‟s popularity, the temple itself is not dedicated to him since he is “only” the protective deity of the site. This becomes the starting point for an analysis of the relationship between religious doctrine and actual practice, the ideal and the real. One of the the most fascinating aspect of the cult of Nākoḍā Bhairava is the oracular possessions that Jains participate in. In these sessions Nākoḍā Bhairava is believed to enter into individuals before verbally interacting through them with spectators. Jain possession has hardly ever been studied before. Contrary, perhaps, to the general view of Jainism as a religion focused on asceticism and self-control with no apparent space for such religious expressions as possession, I argue that possession is not something new or foreign to Jainism.

Volume : 120 Issue No. : 120 Month : July, 2010 JAIN CHATURMAS PARVA The meaning of Chaturmas is “Four Months”. Chaturmas begins on Chaturdashi of Ashadha month (Shukla paksha) and ends on Chaturdashi of Kartik month (Shukla paksha). During chaturmas period, Jain Muni and their followers pursue the principles of non-violence strictly and thus they stay at a single place. Religious activities and rituals are strictly observed by all. Chaturmas is followed by all jain sects, however the timings differ slightly. They use their time to preach, conduct discourses on dharma and anushtan pravachan (preach principles) to the devotees. During these four months, they are invited to listen to these discourses every morning," says Girish Jedia of the Vashi Jain Mandir. "It is the time for Vrats (fast) and revival of religious beliefs," Jain associations in various cities and towns organise Chaturmasi programmes and discourses at different venue. Apart from fasting and carrying other rituals, it is expected that all Jains abstain from eating after sun set and perform samayik or pratikraman in the morning and evening. Workshops, prayer meetings, fasts, discussions and donations are a common feature during Chaturmas period. These four months of monsoon is the ideal time for Jain monks to settle down at a suitable place as they believe this will save numerous insects and other small living beings from getting perished from accidental deaths. These four months are holy not only for the Jains but also for the Hindus but they commence and conclude chaturmas from Ekadashi. They are also publishing reports from time to time which provide us with an opportunity to understand ecology and environment and also bestow on us an in-depth experience of human problems. These studies are, however, lacking in the investigation or survey of human development. In the global society there is a race for economic development, materialistic development and the development of the means of comfort but human development is being lost sight of. This one-sided view as well as endeavours for same are creating a long list of problems. Solutions are also being investigated but they themselves are becoming problems on account of this lopsided approach. The truth is that any development that ignores human development cannot solve the problem. Let us not think of human development only on the basis of materialistic development. Human development is, in reality, the development of consciousness. It is the development of that consciousness on the basis of which one can dream of a truly happy life, free from physical and mental diseases, free from infatuation with material objects, free from tension, full of peace and tranquility.
