The curriculum builds from an innovative cross-disciplinary base (the Core), through 22 rigorous majors, towards a full-year independent (Capstone) project. It is supplemented by opportunities for research with faculty working at the frontiers of their disciplines, by exiting opportunities for community engagement both in Abu Dhabi and around the globe, and by substantial international experience made possible across NYU’s global network of sites. 4 2014–15 | INTRODUCTION | WELCOME In addition, the comprehensive NYUAD educational experience prepares students to construct bridges of common understanding and purpose across human divides, equips them with the intellectual and ethical foundations to set priorities for themselves and the world, and readies them to begin to chart their own paths toward realizing of those priorities. The liberal arts college at NYUAD lies at the heart of an international center of research, scholarship, and artistic advance, at once vitally linked to NYU New York and NYU’s global network and positioned to draw on the insights, ideas, and perspectives of this rapidly evolving century. I am convinced that no other undergraduate institution brings a greater sense of the joy and possibility of the finest liberal arts education or better prepares for leadership of the professions, institutions and societies of our global world. With great pride in the success that NYUAD has already achieved along its historic course, I look forward to our fifth remarkable year, our first year on our new magnificent Saadiyat campus. Dear President Brown: The U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR), has resolved the above- referenced complaint against InterCoast Colleges (the College). The Student alleged that the College discriminated against her on the basis of sex.1 Specifically, OCR investigated: 1. Whether the College responded promptly and equitably to the Student’s complaints of sexual harassment; and, 2. Whether the Student was harassed on the basis of her sex when her teacher asked her who she was attracted to, and forced the Student out of her class when the Student did not show up to a potluck. OCR is responsible for enforcing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), as amended, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq., and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106, which prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in programs and activities receiving financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education (the Department). The College is a recipient of financial assistance from the Department. Therefore, OCR had jurisdiction to investigate this matter under Title IX. To investigate this complaint, OCR conducted interviews and reviewed documents and other information provided by the Student and the College. The applicable legal standards, the facts gathered during the investigation, and the reasons for OCR’s determinations and the terms of the Resolution Agreement (Agreement) entered into by the College are summarized below.

Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

Hirt INTRODUCTION The impact of Rome on the exploitation of natural resources remains highly visible in the many ancient stone and marble quarries dotting the landscape of the former empire. Not only do they reveal the techniques employed in separating the marble or granite from the rock face, the distribution of their output can still be traced. The progressively more scientific determination of type and origin of these stones used in sacred and profane architecture of the Roman Empire reveals an increasingly detailed image of the distributive patterns of coloured stones. Even so, the analysis of these patterns stays vexed: the written sources are frightfully mute on the core issues, expressly on the emperor’s role in the quarrying industry and his impact on the marble trade. Scholarly discourse has oscillated between two positions: John Ward- Perkins argued that by the mid-first century AD all ‘principal’ quarries were ‘nationalized’, i.e. put under imperial control and leased out to contractors for rent; the quarries were a source of revenue for the emperor, the distribution of its output driven by commercial factors.1 Clayton Fant, however, offered a different view: the emperor monopolized the use of coloured and white marbles and their sources not for profit, but for ‘prestige’, consolidating his position as unchallenged patron and benefactor of the empire.

Introduction King Decebalus of the Dacians has his given place in the series of great en­ emies of Rome, a series including names such as Hannibal, Viriathus, lugur­ tha, Mithridates, and Boudicca. Classicists working in many different fields are today very much aware of the king: epigraphers, art historians who ad­ mire Trajan's Column in Rome, students of Roman military history, scholars who write about the emperor Trajan, and - why not - those with an interest in anthropology who study the ancient practice of beheading enemies or col­ lecting their heads. 1 Decebalus is also of obvious interest to those who focus on the province of Dacia, and - true to the topic of this volume - the relations between the imperial centre and one of the last provinces to be acquired by Rome will be explored in this paper by means of an investi­ gation of what I call "the legend of Decebalus". In other words, this study concerns how the memory of King Decebalus lived on in a somewhat different form in Dacia than it did elsewhere. The interest of modem anthropologists in the fate of the Dacian king was of course spurred by the sensational presentation by Professor Michael P. Speidel of the "autobiography" of the "Captor ofDecebalus" in 1970. The funerary inscription commemorating the career of the Roman cavalry officer Ti.
