    Olympic Cyclist Joanna Rowsell Joins Team Action for Prudential Ridelondon-Surrey 100

    Olympic cyclist Joanna Rowsell joins Team Action for Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 Joanna Rowsell MBE, team GB cyclist, world record holder and Olympic gold medallist, will join cyclists riding for children’s charity Action Medical Research in the first Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday 4 August. The long-distance ride, following a similar route to the London 2012 road cycling races, will be a new challenge for the 24-year-old, who is the charity’s Cycling Ambassador. She may be super-quick on a bike but the 100-mile event will be the furthest distance she has ever cycled! As the newest recruit to Team Action, Joanna will join the charity’s 131 riders in the mass participation event and hopes to finish in around five hours. The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 aims to recreate a little piece of the magic of 2012 and will see 20,000 amateur cyclists set out from the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The ride follows a route along closed roads through the capital and out onto Surrey’s stunning country roads and hills before passing by the Houses of Parliament to finish on The Mall in central London. Joanna won gold in the women’s team pursuit at London 2012 and has also been national, European and world champion, as well as a world record holder for the event. Last month she added her first British Time Trial title to her impressive list of achievements. She says: "I am really looking forward to riding the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 with Action Medical Research.

It is hard to avoid starting with the Royal Pardon ... but before that: A TURING YEAR 2014 CARD FROM HONG KONG ATY 1) We asked Loke Lay in Hong Kong if her creative friends might design a card for the start of Turing Year 2014 - 60 years since Alan Turing's passing in 1954. After much work and one or two revisions, this was the outcome - beautiful, we think - small version at: http://www.turingcentenary.eu/ or full-size image at: http://www.mathcomp.leeds.ac.uk/turing2012/Images/Card_vChun.jpg Notice the diamond (60th anniversary) design theme.     ALAN TURING: TRUE TO HIMSELF OVERVIEW Alan Turing (1912-1954) was an accomplished British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, physicist, and biologist. He is often referred to as the father of the modern day computer and is credited with breaking the Nazi Enigma Code. WWII British cryptographer Captain Jerry Roberts is quoted as saying, “Without him – we would have lost the war.i” Soon after the end of the war, the British government awarded Turing with the Order of the British Empire for his contributions. Turing was also openly gay and in the early 1950s was arrested and punished for his sexual orientation by the same government he served. From his earliest days in school to his enduring legacy, Turing faced many challenges, yet, stayed true to himself by pursing his love of science and living an open, honest life. True to Himself provides secondary educators with student handouts, suggested discussion questions, extension ideas and additional resources to help students learn more about this extraordinary man and the context in which he lived.
