The OVO Energy Tour Series is a fun, fast and free cycling event. Taking place in towns and city centres, the rounds gather large crowds Launched in 2009, the series sees Britain’s best male and female riders competing against each other in a unique, team based format as part of a full day of sporting and community based cycling-focused activities. Phil Jones, managing director of Brother UK, and James Golding, holder of the world record for the furthest distance cycled in seven days, are cycling the 1,136km route to raise money for the Dave Rayner Fund, a trust set up to help promising riders fulfil their potential as professional cyclists. Departing from Pembrey Park at 9am on Saturday 1st September, the pair will ride the first seven stages of the route over consecutive days, before completing the final stage in London on Sunday 9th September – the same day the elite cyclists will cross the finish line. Phil Jones, pioneer of the fundraising project, said: “The recent Tour de France victory of Geraint Thomas has helped to shine a spotlight on cycling and show people across the country what talent we have here in the UK. “What’s not always recognised is how challenging it is to become a professional in the sport, particularly for those who don’t have the financial backing or are not part of the elite programme of British Cycling backed by Sport England. Battistella, Sobrero and Brunel jump away early on, at km 1, immediately picking up the pace and growing their advantage. At km 3, the gap stands at 25”; at km 7: 1’50”. At km 10, the breakaway are 2’40” up the road already, and their lead keeps going up, reaching 3’05” at km 20. The situation settles, and the gap hovers around two and a half minutes from km 25 through 35. The pace goes on a notch in the peloton, as the first intermediate sprint approaches. Intermediate Sprint (Golf Gardens - km 42.6) Sobrero leads Brunel and Battistella through the IS. Dekker takes fourth place, 1’45” later. The break hits the -100 km marker. Average speed after one hour of racing: 45.600 km/h. The peloton returns to an easy pace, and the gap goes back up to 1’50” at km 55, and to 2’05” at km 60. Groves touches wheels and crashes with 85 km remaining to the finish. Seventy kilometres into the race, the chasers are 1’35” behind; at the -75 km marker, the gap stands at 1’18”. The Tour returned after a five-year absence in 2004, quickly re-establishing itself as the main event in the British cycling calendar. By 2008 the Tour of Britain had grown to become an eight-day event, allowing it to visit more parts of the UK than ever before. When does it happen? The Tour of Britain takes place in September; this year the race will run from 8 to 15 September. Top riders such as Olympic medallists Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas have competed in the past, but the complete line-up of cycling stars will not be known until nearer the event. This year the final stage of the 2019 OVO Energy Tour of Britain will take place in Greater Manchester. This is the first time in 15 years that Britain’s biggest professional cycle race will return to Greater Manchester this September as all 10 of the city’s boroughs feature in the final stage on Saturday 14 September. The Manchester Stage will see the peloton taking on a 165-kilometre route starting in Altrincham and finishing in Manchester city centre.
