Il velocista tasmaniano batte 7 compagni di fuga. Per la prima volta nella storia un australiano vince la Classicissima di Primavera. Generosa, ma sfortunata rimonta di Scarponi. Per il quinto anno di fila a Sanremo vince un ciclista straniero. Goss ha preceduto nell’ordine Cancellara, Gilbert, Ballan, Pozzato, Scarponi, Offredo e Nibali. Van Avermaet che era fuggito sul Poggio è stato raggiunto dagli inseguitori quando mancavano 2300 metri. Goss ha fatto sua la corsa negli ultimi 200 metri grazie allo sprint fulminante, sfruttando il fatto che era l’unico vero velocista del Riviera24 - 1 / 2 - 29.09.2021 2 gruppetto che si è giocato la vittoria. Per Goss, classe 1986, è il quinto successo stagionale. Battuti anche quest’anno gli italiani, anche se Nibali e Scarponi hanno lottato come leoni sino all’ultimo. La scheda di Matthew Goss da Wikipedia Matthew Harley Goss (Launceston, 18 ottobre 1986) è un pistard e ciclista su strada australiano che corre per l’HTC-Highroad. Conta la vittoria di una tappa al Giro d’Italia e della Milano-Sanremo. Come molti altri connazionali, iniziò l’attività con il ciclismo su pista. Dopo essere stato due volte campione australiano nell’inseguimento a squadre, conquistò la medaglia di bronzo ai Campionati del mondo di ciclismo su pista di Los Angeles del 2005 con Ashley Hutchinson, Mark Jamieson e Stephen Wooldridge, poi la medaglia d’oro l’anno successivo a Bordeaux con Peter Dawson, Mark Jamieson e Stephen Wooldridge. Parallelamente ai successi su pista, iniziò la carriera su strada nella squadra australiana Southaustralia.com-AIS, squadra con cui partecipa alle maggiori competizioni dedicate agli Under-23 riportando numerose vittorie, tra cui Gran Premio Liberazione e il Giro delle Regioni. Nel 2007 passa professionista con il Team CSC di Bjarne Riis. Nei primi due anni da profesisonista vince due tappe al Tour of Britain, una nel 2007 e una nell’edizione successiva, e due tappe dell’Herald Sun Tour nel 2008. Termina secondo al Commerce Bank International Championship e terzo alla Delta Profronde. Con la CSC vinse inoltre l’Eindhoven Team Time Trial 2007, cronosquadre inserita nel calendario UCI ProTour. In queste gare mise in luce le sue caratteristiche di velocista, ma dimostrò anche le qualità in terreni più selettivi come il pavé, terminando al terzo posto la semi classica belga Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne nel 2008, confermandosi poi nel 2009 vincendo la Parigi- Bruxelles, due tappe del Tour de Wallonie e finendo terzo nella Gand-Wevelgem. Dal 2010 corre nel Team HTC-Columbia. Il 16 maggio 2010 vince la nona tappa del Giro d’Italia con arrivo a Cava de’ Tirreni e si ritira dal Giro il 23 maggio, quando la corsa arrivava sul Monte Zoncolan. In agosto vince il Grand Prix de Ouest-France, battendo Tyler Farrar e Offredo in volata. Inizia la stagione 2011 correndo in Australia la Jayco Bay Cycling Classic, una serie di criterium con una graduatoria a punti, aggiudicandosi la prima e la quarta prova e la classifica finale. Ai campionati nazionali termina secondo nella prova in linea. Prosegue la serie di vittorie aggiudicandosi la Cancer Council Classic, gara di apertura del Tour Down Under 2011. Nella principale corsa a tappe australiana è fra i maggiori favoriti per le volate e leader dell’HTC e riesce a vincere la prima tappa. Manca tuttavia il successo finale di due secondi, aggiudicandosi solamente la classifica degli sprint. L’8 marzo 2011 vince la terza tappa della Parigi-Nizza con arrivo a Nuits Saint Georges. An Olympic medal narrowly eluded him at the Beijing Games in 2008 when the Australian team of Jamieson, Bradley McGee, Jack Bobridge and Luke Roberts surprisingly lost the ride-off for third place against New Zealand. His victories also include nearly 20 gold medals in senior and junior competition at national track championships. Jamieson maintains his passion for cycling but, as he concentrates on full-time study at Bendigo TAFE, he is no longer pressured by the intensity of competing on the international stage.

Phil Jones, managing director of Brother UK, and James Golding, holder of the world record for the furthest distance cycled in seven days, are cycling the 1,136km route to raise money for the Dave Rayner Fund, a trust set up to help promising riders fulfil their potential as professional cyclists. Departing from Pembrey Park at 9am on Saturday 1st September, the pair will ride the first seven stages of the route over consecutive days, before completing the final stage in London on Sunday 9th September – the same day the elite cyclists will cross the finish line. Phil Jones, pioneer of the fundraising project, said: “The recent Tour de France victory of Geraint Thomas has helped to shine a spotlight on cycling and show people across the country what talent we have here in the UK. “What’s not always recognised is how challenging it is to become a professional in the sport, particularly for those who don’t have the financial backing or are not part of the elite programme of British Cycling backed by Sport England.
