George Washington Papers, Series 2, Letterbooks 1754-1799 To LUND WASHINGTON February 28, 1778. …If you should happen to draw a prize in the militia , I must provide a man, either there or here, in your room; as nothing but your having the charge of my business, and the entire confidence I repose in you, could make me tolerable easy from home for such a length of time as I have been, and am likely to be. This therefore leads me to say, that I hope no motive, however powerful, will induce you to leave my business, whilst I, in a manner, am banished from home; because I should be unhappy to see it in common hands. For this reason, altho' from accidents and misfortunes not to be averted by human foresight, I make little or nothing from my Estate, I am still willing to increase your wages, and make it worth your while to continue with me. To go on in the improvement of my Estate in the manner heretofore described to you, fulfilling my plans, and keeping my property together, are the principal objects I have in view during these troubles; and firmly believing that they will be accomplished under your management, as far as circumstances and acts of providence will allow, I feel quite easy under disappointments; which I should not do, if my business was in common hands, 38 liable to suspicions. The Society grew up with the United Revelation as a reply to Paine’s Age of Reason. Carter, USN 62Nd Superintendent of the US Naval Academy
Vice Admiral Walter “Ted” Carter, USN 62nd Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy Vice Admiral Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr. became the 62nd superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy on July 23, 2014. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981, was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1982, and graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School, Top Gun, in 1985. He completed the Air Command and Staff College course and the Armed Forces Staff College. In 2001, he completed the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program. Carter’s career as an aviator includes extensive time at sea, deploying around the globe in the F-4 Phantom II and the F-14 Tomcat. He has landed on 19 different aircraft carriers, to include all 10 of the Nimitz Class carriers. Carter commanded the VF-14 “Tophatters,” served as Executive Officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), and commanded both USS Camden (AOE 2) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). His most recent Fleet command assignment was Commander, Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG-12) during Big E’s final combat deployment as a 51 year old aircraft carrier in 2012. Ashore, Carter served as Chief of Staff for Fighter Wing Pacific and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Commander, U.S. Central Command. He served as Commander, Joint Enabling Capabilities Command and subsequently as lead for the Transition Planning Team during the disestablishment of U.S. Joint Forces Command in 2011. After leading Task Force RESILIENT (a study in suicide related behaviors), he established the 21st Century Sailor Office (OPNAV N17) as its first Director in 2013. -

Harvard's Interaction with the Military
Harvard University & the US Military – an introspection INTRODUCTION Since the middle of the 20th century, Harvard has unjustifiably been labeled as a bastion of left wing, anti- military elitists in the forefront of the myopic “Blame America first” radicals. However, the predominate opinion of faculties & undergraduates at most universities have tended to skew to the left since the Baby Boomers revolted in the late 1960’s against the values and traditions of their “greatest generation” parents who won World War II. For several recent decades, the decline in patriotism and service to country among many young Americans has been compounded by narcissistic lack of responsibility, the pleasure principle driving promiscuous sex and the growing use of illegal drugs, revisionist history, the breakdown of the traditional family and biased multi-media communications. In reality, Harvard alumni reflect a bell curve of opinions and many have demonstrated courage, integrity and commitment by serving in the US military from the American War for Independence to the current World War against Islamic Fundamentalist terrorism. The prime purpose of this introspection is to proudly promulgate the untold story of the long Crimson line of Harvard warriors as a role model for current and future undergraduates at Harvard and elsewhere. A secondary objective of this paper is to review the positive Harvard policies of the past that have helped to nurture and develop many Harvard heroic veterans and identify what needs to be done for Harvard to again have a preeminent patriotic role in educating and developing future military leaders. ABSTRACT Since the late 1980s, hundreds of U.S. Navy ships have been decommissioned. Although ship decommissionings were postponed immediately after the September 11th attack, today the Navy is again engaged in "rightsizing" its force. Depending on the type of ship and its age, a ship faces different fates after the decommissioning process has been completed. Except on the rare occasion when a ship is turned into a museum, most decommissioned ships are disposed of in one of three ways. -
