Scolari Universitat Pompeu Fabra – Barcelona El concepto de “interfaz” (interface) fue introducido a finales del siglo XIX para definir una superficie que separaba dos entornos líquidos. La interfaz era entendida como una membrana que marcaba un límite entre dos substancias pero, al mismo tiempo, actuaba como filtro que permitía (o no) el pasaje de un lado a otro de ciertas partículas. Con el correr del siglo XX el concepto fue asumiendo otros significados y funciones. Por ejemplo enThe Gutenberg Galaxy (1962) Marshall McLuhan definió a la “interfaz del Renacimiento” como el encuentro entre el pluralismo medieval y la homogeneidad de la modernidad. La interfaz, en este caso, se presentaba como un espacio de transición. Un lugar de pasaje. Al llegar al mundo informático, los primeros usos del concepto de “interfaz” se orientaron hacia los dispositivos de entrada y salida del ordenador: interfaz SCSI, interfaz USB, interfaz Firewire… O sea, todos esos cables que se encuentran en la parte posterior del computador personal eran la “interfaz”. La irrupción de las nuevas interfaces gráficas, popularizadas a partir de 1984 gracias al Macintosh, llevaron a una inversión del concepto: la “interfaz gráfica de usuario” (graphic user interface) pasó a estar en la parte delantera del computador personal. El ratón, el teclado, los íconos en las pantallas y una nueva gramática de interacción (click = seleccionar, doble click = abrir documento o carpeta, etc.) eran los nuevos componentes de la interfaz. Mucho se ha escrito y debatido sobre las interfaces gráficas de usuarios, desde los principios de usabilidad que deben respetar los entornos virtuales de interacción para incrementar su eficiencia, eficacia y satisfacción hasta los límites que impone la metáfora del escritorio desktop( ) al desarrollo de nuevas interfaces. Disciplinas como la Interacción Persona-Ordenador (Human-Computer Interaction), la Semiótica, las Ciencias Cognitivas o el Diseño Interactivo (Interaction Design) se han preocupado por comprender las interfaces de usuario y han contribuido a su optimización. Tal como propongo en mi libro Las Leyes de la Interfaz (Gedisa, 2018), creo que el concepto de “interfaz” puede ser llevado más allá de la clásica “interfaz de usuario” y utilizado para analizar, com- prender y transformar muchos otros ámbitos de la vida social. En primer lugar, esta nueva concepción parte de una simple definición: la interfaz entendida como una “red de actores humanos (individuales e institucionales), relaciones y procesos”. De esta manera, podemos hablar de interfaces educativas (el aula, la escuela, el sistema educativo, el museo, etc.), interfaces políticas (los partidos políticos, los parlamentos, etc.), interfaces gastronómicas (una mesa familiar, un restaurante, etc.) o interfaces performativas (un evento, un espectáculo, etc.). Desde esta nueva perspectiva se considera que las interfaces forman un ecosistema (las interfaces dialogan, cooperan o compiten entre sí) y evolucionan a través de procesos marcados por la complejidad; por otro lado, las interfaces están lejos de ser un lugar neutral o transparente: ellas son el espacio donde se confrontan las

I was astonished when I learned that, after she and her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, were ousted by a popular uprising and fled into exile, she had somehow managed to return to the Philippines and reenter politics as a congresswoman. My fascination with her grew when I read an article by Bloomberg reporter Bill Mellor about a little-known footnote of her legacy: In 1976, she and President Marcos set out to create a safari park by evicting the population of the island of Calauit and importing 104 African animals.
