Download the Song Lyrics toelichting (NL) - notes de programme (FR) - programme notes (EN) Begin the Beguine Cole Porter (music & lyrics) When they begin the beguine It brings back the sound of music so tender It brings back a night of tropical splendour It brings back a memory ever green I'm with you once more, under the stars And down by the shore, an orchestra's playing And even the palms seem to be swaying When they begin the beguine To live it again is past all endeavour Except when that tune clutches my heart And there we are, swearing to love forever And promising never, never to part What moments divine, what rapture serene 'Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted I know but too well what they mean So don't let them begin the beguine Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember 1 Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember When they begin the beguine Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play 'Till the stars that were there before return above you 'Till you whisper to me once more, “darling, I love you” And we suddenly know What heaven we're in When they begin the beguine I WIsh You Love Charles Trenet & Léo Chauliac (music) & Albert Beach (lyrics) Goodbye, no use leading with our chins My breaking heart and I agree This is where our story ends That you and I could never be Never lovers, ever friends So with my best, my very best I set you free Goodbye, let our hearts call it a day, But before you walk away I wish you shelter from the storm I sincerely want to say A cozy fire to keep you warm But most of all, when snowflakes fall I wish you bluebirds in the Spring I wish you love To give your heart a song to sing And then a kiss, but more than this Que reste-t-il de nos amours I wish you love Que reste-t-il de ces beaux jours Une photo, vieille photo And in July, a lemonade De ma jeunesse To cool you in some glazy glade Que reste-t-il des billets doux I wish you health and more than wealth Des mois d'avril, des rendez-vous I wish you love Un souvenir qui me poursuit Sans cesse Lullaby of Birdland Georges Shearing (music) & George David Weiss (lyrics) There is a weapy old willow That's the kind of magic music He really knows how to cry We make with our lips when we kiss That's how I'd cry on my pillow And there's a weapy old willow If you should tell me farewell and goodbye He really knows how to cry Never in my word land That's how I'd cry on my pillow Could there be ways to reveal If you should tell me farewell and goodbye In a phrase, how I feel Lullaby of Birdland, whisper low Have you ever heard two turtle doves Kiss me sweet, and we'll go Bill and coo when they love? Flying high in Birdland, high in the sky up above all because we're in love 2 Round Midnight Thelonious Monk & Cootie Willams (music) & Bernie Hanighen (lyrics) It begins to tell 'round midnight When some quarrel we had needs mending I do pretty well, ‘till after sundown Does it mean that our love is ending? Suppertime I'm feelin' sad Darlin' I need you, lately I find But it really gets bad 'round midnight You're out of my arms and I'm out of my mind Memories always start 'round midnight Let our love take wings' round midnight Haven't got the heart to stand those memories Let the angels sing for your returning When my heart is still with you Let our love be safe and sound And ol' midnight knows it, too When old midnight comes around Let’s Misbehave Cole Porter (music & lyrics) You could have a great career They say that Spring, means just one thing Yes, you should (and you could) To little lovebirds Only one thing stops you, dear We're not above birds You’re too good (way too good) Let's misbehave If you want a future, darling It’s getting late, and while I wait Why don’t you get a past? My poor heart aches on ‘Cause that fatal moment’s coming’ at last Why keep the brakes on? Let’s misbehave We're all alone, no chaperone Can get our number I feel quite sure, “un peu d’amour” The world's in slumber Would be attractive Let's misbehave While we’re still active Let’s misbehave There's something wild about you child That's so contagious You know my heart is true Let's be outrageous And you say, you for me care Let's misbehave Somebody’s sure to tell But what the heck do we care When Adam won Eve's hand He wouldn't stand for teasin' They say that bears have love affairs He didn't care about those apples out of season And even camels We’re merely mammals Let’s misbehave 3 My Funny Valentine Richard Rodgers (music) & Lorenz Hart (lyrics) My funny Valentine But don't change a hair for me Sweet comic Valentine Not if you care for me You make me smile with my heart Stay, little Valentine stay Your looks are laughable Each day is Valentine’s day Unphotographable Yet you're my favourite work of art Is your figure less than greek Is your mouth a little weak When you open it to speak Are you smart? When I Fall in Love Victor Young (music) & Edward Heyman (lyrics) When I fall in love, it will be forever Or I'll never fall in love In a restless world like this is Love is ended before it's begun And too many moonlight kisses Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun When I give my heart, it will be completely Or I'll never give my heart And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too Is when I fall in love with you Moon River Henry Mancini (music) & Johnny Mercer (lyrics) Moon River, wider than a mile I'm crossing you in style some day Old dream maker, you heart breaker Where ever you're going, i'm going your way. Two drifters, off to see the world. There's such a lot of world to see. We're after the same rainbow's end, Waiting 'round the bend, My Huckleberry friend, Moon River and me. 4 The Rhythm Jeroen D’hoe (music & lyrics) The rhythm is taking you everywhere beneath the sun and the rain You know exactly when they change, they give you laughter and pain If only smile will bring you friends, you hide those tears and just pretend Just like you’re putting your head in the sand and you’re gone Remember you’ve always been my friend They key you’ve lost to open the door of your visible cage Came into your mind as the brightest day into the night that you made The rhythm is taking you everywhere, and life shows exactly how to bring you The feeling of touching a million faces, and you smile Remember you’ve always been on my mind And when you find a way of living “just live” You fix your eyes up to the sky Rhythm is taking you Night and Day Cole Porter (music & lyrics) Like the beat, beat, beat Day and night, why is it so Of the tom-tom That this longing for you, When the jungle shadows fall Follows wherever I go? Like the tick, tick, tock In the roaring traffic's boom Of the stately clock In the silence of my lonely room As it stands against the wall I think of you night and day Like the drip, drip, drop Night and day, under the hide of me Of the raindrops There's an ooh, such a hungry yearning, When the summer who’r is through burning inside of me So a voice within me And this torment won't be through Keeps repeating Till you let me spend my life making love to you “You, you, you” Day and Night Night and day, you are the one Night and Day Only you beneath the moon, and under the sun Whether near to me or far It's no matter darlin', where you are I think of you night and day 5 Cry Me a River Arthur Hamilton (music & lyrics) Now you say you're lonely You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head You cry the whole night through While you never shed a tear Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river Remember? I remember all that you said I cried a river over you Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me and Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue Now you say you love me Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river Well, just to prove you do I cried a river over you Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river I cried a river over you I've Got You Under My Skin Cole Porter (music & lyrics) I've got you under my skin “Don't you know, little fool, you never can win? I've got you deep in the heart of me Use your mentality, wake up to reality” So deep in my heart, you're really a part of me But each time that I do just the thought of you I've got you under my skin Makes me stop before I begin 'Cause I've got you under my skin I tried so not to give in I said to myself: “this affair never will go so well” I’d sacrifice anything come what might But why should I try to resist when, For the sake of having you near darling, I know so well In spite of the warning voice I've got you under my skin? that comes in the night And repeats and repeats in my ear: I'd sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of having you near “Don't you know, little fool, you never can win? In spite of a warning' voice Use your mentality, wake up to reality” that comes in the night But each time that I do just the thought of you And repeats, repeats in my ear: Makes me stop before I begin 'Cause I've got you under my skin Yes, i’ve got you under my skin Deep under my skin 6 Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye Cole Porter (music & lyrics) We love each other so deeply That I ask you this, sweetheart Why should we quarrel ever? Why can't we be enough clever? Never to part Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know Think so little of me, they allow you to go When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it, I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it, There's no love song finer, but how strange the

  • 232 STRAIGHT, NO CHASER Robin DG Kelley. Thelonious Monk
NOTRE DAME R EVIEW STRAIGHT, NO CHASER Robin D.G. Kelley. Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times Of An American Original. Free Press: New York, 2010. Anthony Walton Some days it can seem that jazz has already entered its antiquarian phase—that it is an art form that has entered the era in which all significant forward development has ceased and the true work is now to record ever more accurately and deeply its origin, development, various sub-movements and heroes. Jazz as a genre has entered a kind of “eternal present.” In this it resembles its near-relation the blues, as well as rock and pop, and most in- triguingly for the sake of this argument, classical music. It would seem that there are likely no more innovations to be made. After the dense and atonal harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and electronic contributions of musicians such as Ornette Coleman, the AACM Collective, Cecil Taylor, Andrew Hill, Shannon Jackson, John Zorn, and Bill Frisell among dozens of others, it is difficult to imagine where new directions would emerge from within the realm of what our civilization thinks of and defines as “music.” The most skilled contemporary jazz musicians—Wynton Marsalis being an exem- plar—are, in truth, glossing on the innovations of thirty, forty, fifty, even sixty years ago. And since one of the fundamental pillars of jazz is innova- tion based upon individual creativity, its present state revives an old ques- tion: is jazz over? To even broach such a question is to risk giving offense, or at best to provoke arguments that cannot be resolved, but it helps to clarify some of the challenges faced by a book such as Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original.

Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his dom ineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn towards musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve succe ss in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Br oadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote th e lyrics as well as the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and 30s, but in 1948 he made a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, Kiss Me, Kate. It w on the first Tony Award for Best Musical. Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Any thing Goes, Can-Can and Silk Stockings. His numerous hit songs include "Night an d Day","Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I 've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Born to D ance (1936), which featured the song "You'd Be So Easy to Love", Rosalie (1937), which featured "In the Still of the Night"; High Society (1956), which included "True Love"; and Les Girls (1957).
